Game Thread Marshall at tOSU, Sat. Sep. 21, 12pm ET, FOX

Because of those long runs by Turner, Marshall is one of only 10 teams in FBS that are averaging more yards per rush than per pass attempt.

The other 9 are also really bad at passing.
I'm going to bet by the end of this game that rushing average is cut in half and their going home with bloody lips and a healthy payday.

While Marshall may appear to have a decent running game (6.55 yards per carry, ranked 9 places higher than the Buckeyes nationally), most of that is because their running back A.J. Turner popped a 69 yard run against the Hokies and an 80 yarder against Stony Brook. I like the Buckeyes chances of preventing the big plays and keeping Turner bottled up...
Those long runs by Turner have Marshall tied for first in the nation in:
- Plays of 60 or more yards (3), and
- Plays of 80 or more yards (1)

However, they are tied for 107th in the nation in plays for 10 or more yards

In other words, unless the opponent makes a mistake that allows you to run a play through the A gap that goes for 80 yards (e.g. Marshall vs Stony Brook), Marshall is not particularly adept at creating big plays.

The Silver Bullets by contrast are 2nd in the nation in preventing plays of 10 or more yards.
They are tied for 1st at every distance beyond that (20 through 90), having allowed only 1 play of 20+ and zero beyond that.

Having played Ohio State, Akron and Western Michigan are tied with each other at 108th in the country in completion percentage

Marshall is tied for 125th

There are only 4 teams in FBS with a worse completion percentage

And they've played Stony Brook and Virginia Tech (VT gave up a PE of 216 to Vanderbilt)

Speaking of MAC opponents, is Ball St. the only one we’ve never played?

Among current MAC members, the Buckeyes have yet to play Central Michigan and Ball State.

The only matchup against Eastern Michigan was in 2010 and may not be found in places due to it being vacated (Tatgate).

The first meeting against Ball State is scheduled for 2026.

UMass is joining the MAC (again) in 2025, and has yet to play tOSU in football.

The next opponent, Marshall, was in the MAC during the only previous meeting, a 24-21 Buckeye win in 2004.

Other fairly recent MAC members include:
… UCF (MAC from 2002-2004) only meeting was in 2012.
… Temple (MAC from 2007-2011), have never played in football.

Remember When: Mike Nugent Kicked a 54-Yard Field Goal to Beat Marshall in the Closing Seconds While Santonio Holmes Put on a Career Performance

Ohio State needed to spike the ball in the dying moments to set Nugent up for a 49-yard field goal. The Buckeye offense could not hurry back to the line of scrimmage quickly enough, and Zwick received the snap before all of OSU's players could get set, resulting in an illegal procedure penalty that pushed a potential field goal out to 54 yards.

Tirico introduced Nugent to the field as a senior team captain and Centerville, Ohio native ahead of figuratively and literally one of the biggest kicks in his college football career. Nugent lined up from the left hash and snuck the ball inside the left upright with room to spare to the roar of the Buckeye faithful and the declaration of Tirico as a hero on the national broadcast. Ohio State had prevailed with a 24-21 final score.

Shortly afterwards, "NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE" bellowed throughout the Horseshoe. The kick remains one of the most iconic field goals in the history of OSU football and served as the signature moment in Nugent's second All-American season that concluded with a Lou Groza award.
