Make the Call: Most controversial Buckeye Football loss of all time

We didn't lose, but the NC game vs. Miami contained several crap calls late in the 4th qtr. I contend that the game would have never gotten to OT without several terrible blown calls/non-calls. With under 3 min left in regulation, Ohio State had the ball, and came to a 3rd and 7. Gamble gets held twice on his pass pattern, Krenzel threw the ball low, and Gamble caught it for a first down. Ohio State gets a first down if: 1) either of the holding penalities are called 2) the catch is ruled complete. But, no holding and the pass was ruled incomplete. Ohio State has to punt. At that point, I think Miami only had 1 timeout. If the refs had made one of those 3 calls correctly, the Bucks could have run the clock out with one more 1st down, or would have punted with little time left. As it was, they punted, Miami got a big return, and they were able to send the game to OT. But on that punt return, AJ Hawk was blocked in the back as he zeroed in - as blatant a block in the back as you will see. If called correctly, that would have put Miami on their side of the field with about 2 min. Instead, they were in FG range after the return.

Agreed - Ohio State got hosed out of a 17-14 win in regulation.

Back to that 2007 game against Illinois - I also seem to remember a lot of holding that didn't get called. But that happens in most games. So.... never mind.

2007 Illinois. We played pretty blah to start, but we got hosed on that long TD run that got punched out of the back of the endzone. I still don't understand why we get fucked over on a majority of the replay calls in our own stadium.

And the clearly illegal pick on the Brian Gamble TD catch at the end of the half. And the fumble that was called down on the first long run that we recovered but could not challenge (we could now with the rules since we clearly recovered it). We repeatedly got screwed in that game no doubt.

My only loss in The Shoe....thanks for reminding me.....dick lol

Ahh yes, the Steve Pamon officiated game. A crew that had a grievence filed against it the week before due to questionable calls in the Purdue - Penn St. game yet Delany and Parry let them officiate a late November game featuring the conference's flagship university which just happened to be #1 at the time. Although Delany denied it at the time, they were suspended for the final regular season game the week after the Illinois game. One game too late. This crew never worked another Big Ten game again after this.

Here's an article describing Pamon, this game, and his shady past (ESPN) http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3162395

The Bucks were definately flat this game, but I will always believe the fix was in from this crew.

2007 Illinois is my vote also, that fumble through the endzone was obvious to me from my seat in section 4 - about 140 yards away from the play.

Not to sound like a BWI lunatic, but the refs were paid off.

JUST LOOK AT IT. (BEWARE I ALMOST THREW MY MONITOR OUT THE WINDOW)

So much holding in that game. Not to mention the blatant pick play on the touchdown pass. The fumble. That was a rough game to watch.

Wow! When I first saw the thread title, I immediately thought of 74 Sparty. I completely forgot about that play in the 07 Illi. game. I know that was a rough day all around for the Bucks, and Juice Williams couldn't be stopped on 3rd down in the 4th Qtr., but THAT play was some straight up BULLSHIT!! :mad2::smash:

Going back to the Cooper years, I used to get so upset with Dave Wivocet (sp ?) and his crew. I know it is exaggerated in my mind, but it seemed every time Ohio State got a big run, the next thing you heard was, "But there is a flag in the offensive backfield." Dave would turn on his mic and proceed to say, "Holding. Number 70-something. 10 yard penalty. Repeat the down." At that point I was throwing stuff and saying things I normally don't say. Every time I saw Dave on the field it was one of those "Oh no" type of moments - kinda like now when you turn on the game and you hear Beth Mowins' voice.

I don't know what happened with Dave - whether he grew as an official, or whether someone told him to stop calling 8 holding penalties on 1 team per game, but he doesn't do that anymore. Regardless, he lives in *ichigan, which brings his judgment into question. :smug:

I think I posted this in the thread for that game at the time, but, I spoke with a guy who was either in, or next to the replay booth, the damn tivo broke.

2009 USC. Rolle stonewalled Johsnon on his first carry, but on 4th his knee was down well short of the goal line. That stop, in all likely hood would have at least flipped field position for a Trojan offense that had trouble moving the ball all night.

I'm just going with a game in my lifetime.

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw this thread
