Brockton (MA) Thayer Academy

Offensive Tackle
6-5
320 lbs
Class of 2023

Okunlola worked out at the Under Armour Camp Series in Columbus last month, and he was one of the most impressive players on the field that day. Ohio State has now taken notice and extended an offer to the 6-foot-5, 300-pound tackle. Lettermen Row’s Birm was also impressed when he saw Okunlola:

Some guys just look different, and the 6-foot-5, 300-pound tackle is one of them. He moved extremely well, with good bend and flexibility and was strong at the point of attack. He was solid against the pass rush and had two very good reps against 5-star defensive end prospect Brenan Vernon.

My thoughts? Ohio State wants the best players in the country, and Samson Okunlola is going to be one of them. Extend the offer and if he requires his brother get an offer too, then move on. You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take, right?

SAMSON OKUNLOLA
The dream of landing the five-star offensive tackle remains alive. But, as always, before he can be taken more seriously as someone with a legitimate chance to go to Ohio State, he’ll need to visit Columbus. With the Notre Dame game come and gone, the Buckeyes’ game against Michigan seems like the best bet for Okunlola to use his official visit if he’s ever going to make it to campus this year.

He's literally the hardest read I've seen for a recruit. A staff member for 11W text him about if he'll visit for The Game, and he responded, "I might"... Not exactly a sign of positivity. But the presumed leader for him Miami, had this recent update:

And this was after tweeting back in August:

Not exactly a ringing endorsement there either. Frye(and Day) has to keep grinding and staying in contact, in hopes to get him on campus.

tOSU always seems to get 'one' great OL each year. Hopefully this is the one. We need a Paris Johnson replacement.....Spot on Pnuts, gotta get him to C'bus for a game.

The bolded is a trend I guess I hadn't really caught onto until you pointed it out. The good news is that we have at least 3 very good OL with special powers on board and I think Montgomery can be elite as a tackle or on the interior with his feet and athleticism (247 does have him ranked as the #5 OT in the nation). That said, I think Montgomery looks more like a RT than LT and Samson seems to be suited well for LT. I think we would be fine without Samson, but I would obviously prefer to have him on board...an OL like Sampson can make a good OL a great one and given the finnicky results of OL recruiting, the more bodies the better.

RB, it seems like we many/several 'serviceable' OL candidates. Appears to me more IOL than Tackles. Was surprised that Paris was so much better than what was in the cupboard to start at IOL last year. Hope Paris can get his footwork down and keep CJ clean. Have watched the line, and it seems to be so. Dawand is another case however. ...Go Bucks! Still looking for that road grader on the edges. Go Bucks!

Right now we are heavier on IOL, both on the roster and in commitments. But I seriously think Montgomery is a stud OT prospect, not serviceable. Walker seemed like a bit of a reach, but has upside. Siereveld and Padilla I am very excited on, but definitely IOL. I believe the fear (and probably legitimately) is that we don't end up trying to use guys suited for IOL at OT, fitting a circle into a square if you will...that happened often under Tressel and somewhat under UFM. But if you look at the last class, I think Tshabola and Fitzpatrick are both tackles in the truest form imo...Tshabola ended up as high as #36 overall nationally and Fitzpatrick was in the top 250, so I don't think the future cupboards are as bare as we perceive. Avery Henry looks like an OT to me as well, though no idea if he pans out.

But I would be trying our hardest to get Samson regardless of the odds because it would make me feel a lot better saying I think our future OT situation is secure....even if we all agree our OT future is promising, Samson is one that is so talented you want him no matter what.

Back in the day, Woody used to recruit tackles, and if they didn't pan out, he'd plug them in as IOLs. Worked pretty well then....but today, seems to be more specialization, and as we all know, what works for a kid in HS doesn't necessarily translate well to the college ranks. Love to see tOSU recruit so well in the skill positions, but mostly watch the trenchs to see who is joining up. See Bama grabbing the #1 and #2 OT pretty much every other (?) year. Don't follow enough afterwards to see how they end up, only follow tOSU. Maybe I'm underestimating the quality of our tackles (certainly hope so), but that and QB are hardest positions to project. Lindy's seems to always rank tOSU's OLine as a top ten each and every year, so there's that. After so many years with Stud, am excited (quietly anxious) to see how Frye impacts the OL play. Am reading how Coach Mick is espousing a 'be tough' attitude for all of our players, but always thought that was his mantra every year. Finally, thought that the OL performed very well against ND DL, and they were very highly ranked (again Lindy's). PS, tOSU DL exceeded my expectations against ND's OL. Guess I'll just sit back and enjoy instead of over-thinking it. Go Bucks!
