It's not often you see a photo of the precise moment somebody gets killed. It's not a gruesome photo, but sad nonetheless.

Looking at the track though, how could they say they couldn't see this kind of thing coming? The facility looks unfinished and hazardous.

Jeez - sad and preventable. They're saying it's the fastest track ever and very dangerous... How is it those poles aren't padded? 90mph collision notwithstanding, you'd think some padding would've helped...

My immediate thoughts. How in the world are those poles not covered in something? I understand that is not exactly expected, but expect the unexpected, right? I mean, holy shit, those are uncovered steel poles less than two feet form the edge of the track, how the hell are they not protected with something. Definitely seems like it could have been prevented, or the injuries sustained lessend with some precautions. I would be petrified to luge that course anymore.

Hell, I almost flew out of a waterslide at The Beach a couple summers ago. I was going much slower, but the feeling that I was about to go flying sideways out of a half-pipe twenty feet in the air scared the shit out of me. This luge course looks like it ends at ground level of an unfinished skyscraper - I don't want to imagine flying into that at 90mph - secure in a sled or not.

This kind of thing isn't expected, but it's definitely not unforeseeable. Luge is inherently dangerous - just like anything else where you're driving a vehicle that fast. Participants take huge chances in the name of being the fastest. That doesn't mean they shouldn't take every reasonable safety precaution at the venue. In just a couple photos it looks to me like they have neglected to do that - and some of the participants seem to agree based on their comments.

NBC is kicking off their coverage tonight with this story. It sounds like a lot of people have had trouble with that corner.

Sounds like this track could have benefited from some beta testing. If you're making a video game and everybody biffs at the same spot in the game where nobody really should, you fix it. They said this track has been open for two years, and has a reputation for being fast and dangerous. A person who has slid the track has said that you have to nail the exit from that last turn or it's a "50/50" chance of whether or not you'll bite it.

Unbelieveably stupid design by someone.
How in the world can you have steel poles just a couple of feet from where a human being will be flying by at 90+ mph???
Just flat stupid and preventable.
Very sad start to the games.

RIP

Sad my ass. How many people get to die doing something they love? No matter the year, going out happy should be the only mother[censored]ing goal.

Is that you, Bodhi?

At 21 years old, no, its not the only goal.

You knew the guy?

Anyone that hurls themselves down an ice covered path is well aware of the fucking risks associated with what they're doing. The goal isn't to die at 21, it's to die doing something you love.
