Lou Holtz (Official Thread)

Let me preface this by stating that I don't completely buy the whole Ohio State media conspiracy. But isn't it ironic that Lou Holtz (who picked us against Texas) is the "hater" while Mark May isn't because he picked us to blow out PSU? If there ever was an OSU hater, it is Mark May. Until lately, I can't recall him ever saying anything complimentary about the Buckeyes.

I agree, good post. Marc May is jumping on the bandwagon at the point because he has to. He realizes his credibility is going down the shitter with his idiotic predictions and analysis. I think Lou is going with what he feels. He has that right. Marc May is just blatantly anti-tOSU.

The ESPN guys are just playing by ESPN rules. One guy has to always pick the other side so fans of both teams have reason to watch! No conspiracy, it's just about ratings like any other tv show! :paranoid: Osama Bin May has actually become, dare I say better? He's still a joke though!

I bet his remark that," OSU will roll!" Will have the desired ratings effect!

Perhaps he is so distraught over the loss of his girlfriend, Trev, that he doesn't realize what he is saying. It is no coincidence that the Mark May nice-talk (re tOSU) began shortly after Trev was canned.

What? Have you the ear of the ESPN ombudsman? I thought Trev's ouster was because he didn't want Mark to shave his beard - the bitch, those two would get jealous over everything.

I've heard through various sources that Trev's departure was due in large part to a disagreement between he & May as to whos turn it was to give the reach-around.:)

From an analysts standpoint, picking PSU wouldn't to me indicate hating TOSU. PSU is only a 3 point underdog in a game that the "casual" observer would expect a 7 point spread. When I was at Kent State back in the mid 80's, Holtz came to do a talk there and the guy was very complimentary towards TOSU. To me, he's just doing his job.

Despite coaching for Notre Dame, I always liked Lou Holtz. I wish he would have avoided South Carolina and newscasting.

I don't hold it against him that we really wanted him to be the Buckeye head coach way back when but he chose to coach elsewhere. I don't think that makes him anti-OSU.

Maybe he is trying hard to not look like a homer from Ohio in his new career as a "sports analyst".

I think the problem is that he is trying too hard right now. He doesn't look comfortable to me and I am hoping he will settle in or leave this behind.

Holtz, Paterno, even our Woody, very few great coaches end their careers on a high note. Consequently, they often are trying to be remembered for earlier accomplishments. Cooper also looks rigid and ill-at-ease.

My problem with using well-known coaches, like Holtz and John Cooper, is that they understood the game well in their era and they get it a hell of a lot better than me now, but that doesn't make them sportscasters.

So, it's a mismatch, in a job that looks a lot harder than it looks. A guy that has content skills but no training to provide process skills takes on a job that is 80% process skills and 20% content. Sometimes, they come off a bit like teenagers at their first dance, insecure in front of the camera and trying to say something meaningful and funny. Other times, they seem to try to say something "professorial" so we can all remember that "he used to be Lou Holtz."

A guy with an obvious sense of humor and self-deprecation, like Corso, does fine because he isn't trying to justify that "great coach from the past" label.

When I watch Lou Holtz and John Cooper on TV these days, I am left wondering why someone who I think knows a lot more than I do sounds like he knows one hell of a lot less. Relax guys, just tell us what you think and why and forget trying to fit into the ESPiN banter mode. Be yourselves and have some fun. :wink2:

I can't stand the way holtz talks. It's not being mean, he's not a friend I talk to at a party, he's a guy being paid for his talking skills. I wouldn't want me up there either.

I don't know that he's that biased really. If anything, he's gonna have more respect for the way tressel coaches, especially given his familiarity with Cooper's woes (even tho ND games turned out ok).

i couldn't agree more. listening to him speak is like hearing Sterling Sharpe call a football game, or John Madden. The guy doesn't seem to be an OSU hater, i think he is just not cut out for a tv personality.

Don't get this one, BKB?!? I just did that little kids to Disney thing a couple of months back. Given what it cost, the delays in the park and the sugar-induced meltdown afterwards, it felt a lot like hell to me!

Yeah, I know the feeling. Took my kids there a couple years back too, and while it was OK for my daughter, the rest of the crew was miserable.. At least at Disney you get to see the occasional MILF and you can get some good food, albeit too pricey. In hell, or so I've heard, it's really just kinda like sitting around in State College PA or South Bend Ind when school's not in session.
