Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

I think Ty Howard is nothing more than a depth piece. I could be wrong though and not to be negative about the kid (the coaches obviously see something or they wouldnt bring him in) but I doubt a transfer from Duquesne is running dudes off.
Meanwhile:

That a pretty sizeable shakeup for wherever he's headed.

A local 3 star gets a chance to go to Ohio State - probably his dream school. That's why.

He'd been recruited over. At some point kids do want to play.
I get it, but he shone in the time he was in (mop up). If he was patient, he could see a path.

The local kids used to be the players OSU brought in for development, and they stuck around.

Times have changed and even the Ohio kids want to get early playing time.

It seems way to early to determine whether he would make his way onto the OSU playing field.

Lock must have had the talk early.

Or, maybe he just wanted something else. Sometimes being too close to home has its own issues too.

Whatever it is, asking "why do they even commit" is silly. Their reasons are their own. It's a new era.

No it's not silly. He had to know coming in as a 3 star, it may take a longer time to go up the depth chart. OSU certainly didn't make promises. It is so early in his development. This isn't at all a slam on him, just perplexing.

Yes he had his own reason's but he could have been already part of a program, such as Cincy or Marshall that would be more suited to a 3 star prospect getting in early.

It is a new time, and it should give everybody pause who has lobbied for OSU to offer more Ohio kids who have a more developmental path, cough cough the O-line.

Of course I wish Sam the best of luck, and wish us OSU fans got to see what he could do in the S&G. Hopefully he lights things up wherever he go's other than Scum.

Nah it's pretty silly. He got an offer from his dream school. Committing to that offer isn't silly at all. This isn't the thread to debate that though.

Why do we as fans tend to assume that because Kid A is from the state school and grew up a fan, that he doesn't have dreams of actually playing? I think sometimes our Fandom gets in the way of kids who are football players, and not realizing that they don't want to spend the next 4-5yrs on the bench just to graduate and tell their friends and family they went to the Big state school they dreamed of. This is no longer the era of Rudy and sitting your entire football career and being a cheerleader, kids want to play and they deserve it. SWD was from Amish country, transferred to Pick North and knew the whole time that playing at OSU would be an uphill battle. Good on him for trying, but maybe he goes to Toledo tears it up, and meets some of his Buckeye brethren at the next level. Wherever he goes, he's still a Buckeye in my mind

My point is, who said he would not play? He left so early. I am assuming that if OSU offered him, he can play. Maybe not right away.

He cut his journey short. With that said, he did what he believes is in his best interest.

Just super early is my thing.

So do you think Grant Toutant and Trey Leroux can play at OSU too? Some guys who sign with OSU, are better than others. And because a player can play, doesn't mean he's going to beat out other players. The writing is on the wall that SWD was a depth player. It would've been nice to see him stay, but he would've been the 3rd RB at best in '25. That's no shade

It's a new era, guys aren't gonna stick around for 3-4 years anymore hoping to crack the top of the depth chart later in their college career. It makes perfect sense for a player like SWD to take their shot, get a year or 2 of development at Ohio State, then moving on to somewhere where they will get playing time if that playing time clearly isn't coming at Ohio State.

Then there is Miyan Williams. There is no way to know a players freshman year who doesn't have the name Jeremiah Smith.

I am going to agree with Mike80 on that this isn't really the place for this debate. Fully understanding that I am the impetus for the debate.

I am going to agree with
Probably the coaching staff.

I don't believe Loklyn recruited him, so very well could be.

Seems like it can work both ways today, which is great for the players. Start at a school like tOSU get some development and go somewhere to play. Or, start at a lower division school like a MAC and get playing time and experience and move up to a bigger school.

Seems win-win to me for schools and players.
