Live NFL 2006 Draft Coverage (official thread)

That 2002 class was just ridiculous.
1st rounders: Hawk, Carpenter, Holmes, Mangold.
Other draft picks (prediction): Schlegel, Kudla, Sims
Future draft picks: Smith (1st rounder if he continues to improve), Pitcock, Richardson, Downing, Barton, Hall?
Wildcard: Clarett (sure first rounder had he remained at OSU)

whoops, yeah not sure how he snuck onto that list

Here are the number of 1st day draft picks by school for the past five years, including 2006:

Check out this tidbit of Day 1 picks in the last five years:

Miami - 27, Ohio State - 21, USC - 18, Oklahoma - 18, Georgia - 17, Florida State - 15, Texas - 12, Florida - 12, Tennessee - 12, Iowa - 11, LSU - 10, Auburn - 9, Michigan - 9, Maryland - 9, Penn State - 8, Oregon - 8, Nebraska - 8, VaTech - 8, South Carolina - 8, UCLA - 8, Stanford - 8

Haha, I'm not sure what to make of that little run-way thing that Leinart, Cutler, Young, etc. particpated in. Also, I feel that th ebiggest winners in the draft thus far are the Cardinals and the Titans. Dennis Green got the best offensive talent that he could bring in to Arizona. A trend that he has consistently used. Why? Because Green doesn't want to win. He wants to score a lot of points.

The real winners I saw today were the Jets, Cardinals, Titans, Lions, and Saints, with the Saints there just because they got bush at #2.

Jets showed some desire to keep their quarterback vertical with 2 solid OL picks in the first, and got an OLB in the second and IBL, our own AS in the 3rd.

Cardinals are winners if only because they got one of the top-teir QBs in this draft without having to trade up, then they got Leinart his old OG from USC for a little bit of instant chemistry. The best pick though might be Leonard Pope, at 6-7 he's able to go up for a grab-ball, which is all the better since Matt seems to have a lot of balls sail on him.

The Titans are here mainly because I'm drinking the "VY's game will translate" kool-aid, which makes him a great pick at #3. In the second they grabbed Lendale White, a good choice to keep opposing defenses from keying on VY exclusively. Together they should make for a quality backfield. White was a real value here, and if Chow was willing to vouch for his character, it had to be a no-brainer for the Titans.

The Lions managed to go through a whole draft day without picking a WR, that's gotta make them winners! Brian Clahoun did have 53 catches for Wisconsin last year though ... Seriously though, Sims should be a speedy LB, and with Shaun Rodgers eating space in up front he should have the freedom to make plays. I'm not thrilled with Bullocks, but like I said before, No WRs!

interesting tidbit about just how much leinart lost, ignoring the arm surgery factor
rjkarl (wake board) said:
Assuming Leinhart lost $20M by going back to scool, by the time he is 59, it will have cost him about $192M.

$20M netting $12M....at 8% on his investments will have doubled four times in that period.

I know the Redskins have to worry that Gibbs could retire at any time, but do they have to keep trading future picks away to grab players who should fall to them anyway??

Gave up a 6th and next year's 2nd to move up 20 picks and select Rocky McIntosh.
unbelieveable! (didn't hear the trade details before, thanks E!spn) Daniel Snyder lives up to his reputation yet again... horrendous move by the skins.

as posted by bucknut11 in their respective threads, this is a cool feature by ea sports showing all of the draft picks in their future uni's (ignoring the nfl number constraints)

however, why is VY white?

It's funny because when Chow was at USC WeAreSC couldn't go two weeks without a "Why doesn't Chow give White more carries?" debate

I thought this was funny, and true. Among John Clayton's draft day LOSERS, he listed:

5. USC: First, they lose to Texas in the Rose Bowl. Now, they lose to Florida State, Ohio State and NC State in the draft. While the Seminoles had four defensive players in the top 19, the Buckeyes had five first-rounders, and the Wolfpack had three, the Trojans saw a number of their players slip. Bush negotiated himself out of being the first pick. Leinart went No. 10 to Arizona. Character questions must have played into Winston Justice's drop into the second round. White didn't go in the first round and became a bargain in the second for the Titans. Plus, USC still has to deal with the aftermath of all the alegations swirling around Bush and his family.

I believe the first scUM player has just went.

Gabe Watson, DT from scUM has went to the Cardinals, with the 107th overall pick.

Another scUM player goes

Jason Avant, WR from scUM, goes to the Eagles, with the 109th overall pick.

Jahri Evans (Bloomsburg) was sandwiched between the first 2 Michigan players

for perspective, Bloomsburg is a D2 school that lost in the first round of the playoffs (despite being undefeated at the time).
