Most slaughterhouses use a tool called a bolt gun (seen below) to terminate their livestock. It is held to the animal's forehead, the trigger is pulled, and an eight-inch steel bold fires and retracts, killing the animal instantly. Proper use of the bolt gun is very humane, but totally ruins any potential trophies.

Sorry, already knew that.

I knew a guy that owned a slaughterhouse and watched him slaughter many animals. (Hogs, cattle, sheep.)

Actually a pretty neat process to see.
