Legit shot at final 4?

Heck I'd be happy with sweet sixteen. OSU is very good if they shoot well, but there's no one inside that can play with the bigs of UK or Kansas. I could really see a second round loss or a big run. Neither would surprise me. Turner is a great great player, but until OSU gets a legit inside presence, they're gonna have a hard time making final fours.

I think Ohio State this year resembles the Marquette team that Dwayne Wade took to the final four whenever that was, 2003 or so.

ET is, IMO, right about where Wade was at this point in their college careers although Wade was more consistent with the deep shot and ET rebounds better.

If the draw if favorable, then yeah, it's possible.

But they won't get through the Elite 8 because they will likely be facing one of the best teams in the country. I DO think they could run with Villanova or Syracuse, but I think UK and Kansas's inside game would be too much to overcome.

There is also one more player that is a key to Ohio State's success - and that's Lighty on the offensive side. If he plays within himself and within the offense and remains under control, he's much more effective.

This team stinks! Period!

They do nothing great, and even less good.

If they somehow sneak into a top 5 seed I see them as the prototypical Round 1 #12-#5 upset victim (although NOT really an upset because they are that bad). Over-rated "superstar" in Turner. A bunch of role-players that can't play a role, and a lousy Coach.

Please remember all of this as you fill out your brackets when the BP Tourney Challenge contest begins. Seriously, if YOU want to have a legit chance at winning, pick the Buckeyes to lose in the first round!!!

And, as you fill out those bracket sheets next month, remember that there are numerous conferences that have never produced a National Champion. I've isolated 4 of them for you, and strongly suggest that you pick your Final Four Teams from the Tournament reps from these conferences, because THEY ARE DUE!

MAC- they play good hoops here.
MEAC- I think they play pretty good hoops here
OVC- could be a good hoops league, or an acro for Ovarian Cancer
Patriot- very "patriotically" inclined.

The depth on the bench is an issue in the NCAA tourney. Tired legs = lower shooting percentage, a few more open shots for opponents, etc.

I agree with most others. The Buckeyes have a good shot at the Sweet 16 with the right matchups. If OSU have some luck in the draw and seeding, then maybe Elite 8. I would be very surprised if they got to the Final Four.

I truthfully believe that the only depth problem will come if Lauderdale and Turner get into foul trouble.

IMO, for tOSU to make the final four at least all of these things have to happen:

Favorable Matchups - if we matchup with a team with bigs and decent guard play (Syracuse, Texas, etc.) we will be in trouble.

Evan Turner - will need to play lights out (i.e. - the 32 pt, 0 turnover game against Iowa).

Dallas Lauderdale - will have to stay out of foul trouble and give us 25 - 30 minutes a game (5 - 10 ppg wouldn't hurt either).

Lighty, Buford, Diebler - ALL would have to find their shot, or at least 2 of those 3 for every game.

In conclusion, I really do not foresee Ohio State going much past Sweet Sixteen. However, next year I think March Madness could be fun with the new guys moving in.

Agreed. I'm in the camp that thinks depth is overblown except for the "insurance" nature of it ^^.

The final 4 is a serious possibility to me. Having someone like Turner defensively masks a lot of the issues that come from a lack of size. He cleans up enough of the defensive rebounds just because he's so long and athletic. I'm comfortable with Lighty limiting the production of any PF. And I like Lauderdale on the defensive side against anyone in college this year, as long as he can stay out of foul trouble.

Some analyst last night compared tOSU with ET to the '88 NC Kansas team, which was called Danny and the Miracles (current Jayhawk assistant Danny Manning).

You never know, but I agree that avoiding Kansas, Kentucky, and Syracuse would help them have a better chance.

You make it sound like that's an easy task... but I'm an optimist and not an elitist pr ick bent on ruining peoples lives. :biggrin:

My thoughts...
This team should win the opening round, regardless of who they play.
The Sweet 16 would make the post-season successful.
The Elite 8 would be a great run.
A Final 4 birth would be an amazing run.

I 'expect' OSU to get to the Sweet 16 and maybe to the Elite 8, depending on the Sweet 16 match-up. Turner can keep the Bucks in any game by himself, as long as the others are playing well, particularly Lighty and Buford, this team can make a deep run.
