Look, here's the straight truth, LeBron is the greatest player playin today. He absolutely carried and dominated in much of the Finals. It takes 5 guys to play as an NBA team so there were always 4 other guys on the court. But if you watched the series, it's clear that regardless of whether Allen hit a shot or Wade had a good game, it was always LeBron who carried them. He may have thought it would be easy to team up with Wade and Bosh to get championship, but in the end that wasn't true and he ended up playing fucking awesome basketball. He CARRIED the team through the season and the Finals. You don't have to like it, but he's now a two time champion largely because he earned it. That's not contrarian, that's truth.
Now, feel free to rant on about how he doesn't measure up to some other past legend.
Not entirely the "straight truth". I would agree that as of today, Bron is the best player in the game. An absolute force. I would agree there were stretches in the finals that he did carry the team. (I would also say that there were times that Wade carried the team and that is something that should not be overlooked.)
I would agree that for most of the 4th quarter in Game 6, Bron Bron carried the team. So I have seen a lot in your post that I do agree with.
However, what I don't see in your post is another "straight truth" that came out in Game 6. Yes, Bron carried the Heat for much of the 4th quarter...got them back in it. That showed his greatness and unmatched ability. But how about those last 3 or so minutes of the 4th quarter in Game 6? The minutes that I think many would call "crunch time". How did Bron Bron perform then? I seem to remember 3 or 4 turnovers by "The Chosen One" and some horrible shots, bricks if you will. If Allen doesn't hit that 3 with 5 seconds left, THAT is what would be discussed. How LeBron faltered down the stretch. (And the Bron Bron apologists would have been clamoring that his heroic efforts during the 4th quarter was what had the Heat even in the game.)
Now I am not going to rant about how he doesn't measure up to past greats. I believe that when I watch him play, I am watching the best player today and 30 years from now, he will be considered the best player of his era.
(I digress, but something about the phrase "he is a two time champion largely because he earned it" doesn't quite seem right. It must be the "earned it" part. Forming an NBAAU team seems less than "earning it" but whatever.)
What I will find interesting in 30 years is closer scrutiny of the "greats" from different eras. It seems that up to this point in time, the truly greats have had their team (and yes the greats would say it was THEIR team) built around them. The "straight truth" is that Bron Bron did not. This "straight truth" does not diminish his skill level...his ability....his standing as the best player in the game today, but I wonder how "great" is one, The Chosen One no less, who takes the easy route. As Woody was quoted as saying,
"Nothing that comes easy in this world is worth a damn."
And a final Woody quote, ?Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.? I would love to ask the past greats what level of respect they have for Bron and if they feel he really earned it.
