Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

Cowherd was just running his mouth about how LeBron's popularity numbers dropped substantially in June which was before he left, which means that Cleveland was hurting his brand and he will bounce right back up after he starts winning in Miami.

As usual he is just trying to piss people off, but if anything that result proves that people were more pissed about how he handled the whole process more so than him actually leaving.

I don't know if anyone brought this up on the show, I had to turn it off.

Ombudsman Don Ohlmeyer: Lebron James' 'Decision' special damaging for ESPN - ESPN

The Ombudsman gives his take... finally.

Part of the issue was that ESPN and Team LeBron's concept for "The Decision" was based on hype. It was created to make James' decision an extravaganza. In that respect, it was immensely successful. It reached an enormous audience. And if your attitude is "I don't care how you talk about me, just talk about me," then mission accomplished. But James' decision was going to be attention-getting, regardless. When the best player in the league changes teams, that's big news. And James and his advisers should have realized the importance of letting fans from the rejected markets down gently, especially those in Cleveland. He should have done so with style, grace, humility and appreciation -- he could have largely avoided the PR land mines and moved on to Miami.

I cannot help but think LeBron think the reaction of Cleveland fans has affirmed LBJ's decision.

Nope. Cleveland fans loved Lebron and he didn't reciprocate it. The reaction is consistent with someone who gave another person everything they could give in a relationship only to be kicked to the curb.

If Lebron sees it as an affirmation, then that's just a byproduct of his continued disillusionment.

BTW, TP is tweeting back with The King---maybe you outta disown him too?

Lebron is a bigger star. TP has to be flattered by the attention and respect from such an important sports figure. It would be like a Hall of Fame coach (Izzo) calling - you have to respond. (Oh wait, not if you have a Florida license plate that says "PCOSHT")

The annoying thing for me is that LBJ has now endured so much criticism from "The Decision" and the various shenanigans surrounding it, that defending him has become the cool thing to do for the various talking heads on ESPN.

Dude, why are you wasting your breath?

That comment about TP could turn into a very slippery slope too.. I won't bite but there's no reason for it.

You've made your point, and others have too, just get out of this thread as no one is going to change your mind and we aren't going to change yours. It isn't a "fun" debate, it's really irritating.

Is it the Ombudsman's job to editorialize on Lebron's decision or just to discuss ESPN's handling of the story in general?

Do you have a problem with (a) the fact that the ombudsman was editorializing at all, or (b) the substance of his editorial? Your past posts in this thread indicate that you wouldn't have taken issue with the ombudsman's comments had they been something along the lines of, "LeBron, as a free agent, can do whatever he wants and the city of Cleveland should get over it."

I didn't read the whole article but my point was that the Ombudsman should be concerned about ESPN's role in "The Decision". Not Lebron's decision itself.

My understanding (and i could be wrong) of the job of an Ombudsman is to be an impartial bystander and point out where a network or newspaper may have shown errors in judgment or coverage decisions.

ESPN can't control what Lebron's decision is, so why should the Ombudsman comment on it at all? His comments should have been directed towards ESPN's handling of the situation. Should they have aggreed to give control of the special to Lebron's management? Should they have allowed Jim Grey to do the interview instead of one of ESPN's reporters? Should they have given up their advertising rights? Should they have spent 8 am to 10 pm reporting on Lebron every 15 minutes?

That is my point. If it is an Ombudsman's job comment on the story as well as the coverage, then I stand corrected.

one thing that is still the most arrogant and shows who lebron really is to me is how he has not said anything to the fans or city of cleveland....when CC sabbathia was traded he took out a whole page ad thanking the city of cleveland for his 8 or so years in cleveland and how much he appreciated everything...this is lebrons home whether he likes it or not and he has to come back here sometime to face the music...i think it would be good on his part to thank the city and the fans in some way even if we hate him more then anything right now...and possibly forever

Sentiment such as this may be the reason why he hasn't done anything:

I want to hear about Lebron raping a woman in the bathroom at a Georgia bar or sodomizing an employee at a Colorado hotel. I want to hear about Lebron beating up the mother of his children. I want to hear the Heat front office running a train on Lebron's mom. I want someone to confirm that Lebron uses PEDs. I want a story to come out that Lebron was the second fucking gunman on the grassy knoll.
