Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

I'd say that the NBA was a better league when Jordan was 22-23 than it is right now for Lebron at 22.

It doesn't and shouldn't diminish what Lebron is doing (the guy is practically going 1 on 5 every night), but the eras are completely different right now.
agreed but if you want to look at it like that, then you can never make any comparisons in most sports

Column: LeBron has lived up to the hype

NANCY ARMOUR

CLEVELAND - Imagine being 22, and having to carry a franchise. Now imagine being 22, and having to carry the hopes and dreams of an entire city. A city that's known nothing in sports but heartbreak for two generations. A city so starved for something good its most memorable events are somebody else's triumphs.
A city just up the highway from where you grew up, making those disappointments all the more personal.
Imagine that kind of pressure. Most athletes would crumble under a fraction of the weight. LeBron James, though, isn't most athletes. Isn't like anybody else, to be honest.
All those comparisons to Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson? They don't do justice for what this kid from Akron has done for Cleveland and the Cavaliers.

Continued....

You have to remember though, Jordan wasn't winning anything when he was 22-23, so what Lebron is doing is even more impressive if you take that into account.

Jordan also went to college for a few years and was much greener to the league than Lebron is at 22. Another tough comparison to make.

Any thoughts on LeBron's supposed desire to skip the birth of his 2nd child in order to play a game if those two events happen to overlap?
I guess that is a tough choice driven by this one fact - LeBron likely views himself as essential to the the Cavs and their chances of victory. I'd humbly submit that his assessment is absolutely correct.

It is not at all unique for athletes to miss the birth of their kids.

I believe Ripken was planning to miss the birth of his kid when he was going for his record. His parents did not want the kid to have to live with any thought of him/her being the reason daddy did not break the record. Fortunately, the kid was born on an off day.

Do anyone think this would have even been an issue 40 years ago?

Honestly, It's his and his girlfriend's decision.

If you were about to undertake arguably the most important thing in your life, and your significant other was pregnant, and you were both ok with missing the birth, what's the big deal. From all acounts he's a terrific father, so I don't have a problem with this.

Nope.

His wife was telling him to play, but he was adamant that when Ryan (the youngest) was born that he'd be there.......
