JUST BE LEBRON

James, Jordan beg comparison, but Cavs' star coming into his own

By Terry Pluto

LeBron James wears No. 23 and opens every Cavaliers game just like another No. 23 -- by rubbing his hands with enough resin to gag a moose, then tossing the stuff up in the air into a white cloud hovering over the scorer's table.
That's exactly what Michael Jordan did when he dominated the 1990s, winning six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls.
Despite the huge Nike shoe contract, the endearing commercials and the outrageous, Jordan-like hype, James is no Jordan.
Nor should he try to be like Mike.
James is a different type of player with his own personality on the court. While James grew up like most young basketball players of his generation -- a poster of Jordan on his wall, a pair of Air Jordans on his feet -- he was wise enough not to copy Jordan in every area.
``LeBron reminds me more of Magic Johnson than anyone else,'' said Joe Tait, the Cavs' veteran broadcaster. ``He does so many things well, but it's his passing that is as good as I've ever seen.''
Tait and I discussed James as we had a long lunch Sunday. Tait's historical reference goes back further than mine. He turned 70 on Tuesday and has been calling NBA games since 1970.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
LeBron's girlfriend is fine, and so is he

Saturday, May 19, 2007 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
East Rutherford, N.J. -- The biggest concern for LeBron James was not how bad the Cavaliers shot from the field in Game 5 on Wednesday, but it was the condition of his pregnant girlfriend, Savannah Brinson, who left The Q on a stretcher at halftime.
Brinson, who is due to give birth to her and James' second child next month, is at home. James said Brinson is doing fine.
"I was concerned," James said. "You always want your family to be protected and fine. I was assured she was OK [during the game]."

James needs to play the star card to give Cavs a chance

NANCY ARMOUR

AP Sports Columnist

It's not often a pro athlete needs to be more selfish, to ignore his teammates and grab some glory for himself. It's even rarer when that athlete is a superstar, for whom entitlement is pretty much a birthright.
LeBron James, though, isn't your average superstar. He's polite, he's humble, he plays well with others. Admirable qualities, to be sure - but not at this time of year.
If James doesn't start copping some major 'tude soon, he and the Cleveland Cavaliers may as well break out the sun block and beach towels now. Big games from Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao are nice, but the Cavs have no hope of getting past the Detroit Pistons unless James takes control.
"I don't think he forced anything," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said after James spent much of Monday's 79-76 loss making his teammates look good. "But I don't mind him being more aggressive and more selfish at times."

I just saw the lead story on CNN's NBA page and it says "despite a season high 39 from Lebron James..."

He hasn't scored 40 all year? That's just pathetic. It's not like there is another superstar on the team to take up some of his scoring.
How does 48 sound? :pimp:

King me!!!

Quote
"After the breathtaking display of talent and will gave the Cavs a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference finals, the 22-year-old star said he felt terrible.

"I'm banged up. I'm winded. I'm fatigued," he said. "I've got all day tomorrow. It's going to be tough to get some rest when you got a crazy, 2-year-old running around the house. So hopefully, I can take him to one of his grandma's house.""

thank God for Grandma

NOW we can officially start talking about Jordan and James side by side.
I think of it as an important step, a giant one, on the path to LeBron being the guaranteed rainmaker at clutch time. When that journey is done he becomes the man the Cavs can lean on in playoff games, the man who both makes the points and scores the points, the man the opposition fears because they cannot stop him.
When that journey takes him to a title, then I think the side by side comparisons become fair to James, when you speak of LeBron alongside Magic Johnson that is.

Or not.....

The guy has had some great playoff games, but let's not say he's the next MJ until he wins a ring or 3.....or a couple MVPs....

he's only 22 so it isn't like he doesn't have time or anything though....but he's not on MJs level yet.

That said, if he's truly taken the next step, they close Detroit out in Cleveland in the next game. MJ would. They were there last year and didn't get it done.....
