Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

And Gilbert -- he paid for the arena with his money -- Like Mikey boy did for PBS down here?

It's restrictive trade -- how much they are paid is not the issue -- the player's right to expect what the market will bear is the same as their bosses. If Modell could make more in Baltimore he was free to move on -- same with Al Davis. They are free to negotiate with different cities, different TV networks, and on and on, yet they demand the right to restrain athletes from the same right.
its a union shop. the players collectively bargained for their "rights." lebron had every right to leave. im a hockey fan, the july 1 bonanza happens every year and i enjoy it. granted when a player such as ryan smyth aka captain canada goes back he gets what he gets. granted he left cyring since the oilers with a deadline trade, sobbing in the airport.

Disagree. Gilbert, while certainly making "friends" among Cavs fans who are upset, is not acting like a professional. Makes the NBA look bad (Edit: "NBA" is probably too strong, but certainly Cleveland Cavs brass), in my opinion. Indeed, if this is the way this guy acts... well... maybe it's no wonder LeBron wanted out. Quit being a fucking baby, Gilbert, and do you fucking job
agree. lebron and gilbert made the nba look foolish, childish and immature...

Well I think both sides emerged from this with some pie on their face. First off if Lebron really was all about winning and not about money there were many other teams he could've gone to and taken a lot less money. Chicago would've made the best sense, they have all the pieces. Miami now has three superstars and 9 nobodies. I saw their projected line up last night and it had Dexter Pittman a rookie at center, Mario Chalmers the point guard and some second round picks coming off of the bench. I don't know what their current roster looks like but that's not going to win a ring. It's too ridiculous to believe. I respect that he's his own man and can go where ever he wants but that was just stupid.
As for Dan Gilbert he could've handled this with more class. Bashing Lebron like that only makes him look like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum. You just don't do that, it was a very unwise move on his part.
As for us fans we have the right to vent and all the hate coming his way is well deserved. He's going to have to live with what he's done the rest of his life and he'll probably never be welcomed back in Ohio. I hope he has fun living it up and partying with his homies in South Beach. I'm sure he'll have a lot of fun but I'm even surer he's not going to win a title anytime soon.

Isn't Wade sponsored by Adidas? they have to be thrilled

Converse

But that contract will eventually expire.

Then maybe Wade can host an ESPN special to decide which shoe manufacturer to go with. Don't know of a title that would suit it. All ad proceeds can benefit the senior citizen centers of Dade County.

Lebron said that he understands that Cavs' fans will be upset, but he hopes HIS "real fans" will support him. [censored] that. We are Cavs' fans - not Lebron fans. Its never been about the individual. It was always about the team and the city. I just hope we can continue on without him.

Surely you can understand his confusion. Once LBJ was annointed "King", the people of Cleveland were no longer his fans, they were his subjects. The devotion of a subject to his monarch is never a matter of free choice, it's a matter of compulsory entitlement.
Remember, where Kings are concerned, it's not about what they owe you, it's about what you owe them.

Pretty pathetic attempt there. There's a huge difference between terminating an incompetent nincompoop and spending seven years building up this fabricated image of yourself and them leaving for "greener pastures"....in a very public manner.

seems pretty obvious after Gilberts childish letter that Bron probably knows him a lot better than all of us. A person who puts out a scathing letter like that 20 seconds after the announcement is probably somebody Bron didn't want to continue playing for anyway.

Somebody in that Cavs organization pissed him off somewhere, that's the only reason for something like this.

For the record, I don't agree with how he went about making the decision live on TV. Could have done it in a better way. But he did raise 5 million bucks for the Boys and Girls club.

Holy shit. This might be the dumbest post in a thread littered with dumb posts. Incredibly fitting it comes from a m*ch*g*n fan.

Why does it follow that the Cavs organization must have [censored]ed him off? Or that if he is [censored]ed off, that it's for a worthwhile reason? Maybe Dan Gilbert said to him, "We'd love to have you back, but we want our franchise's leadership to have the freedom to choose player personnel and coaches without your approval." Maybe James and his marketing firm/entourage were just into some cult-of-celebrity party bull[censored] and liked the idea of having a short commute to the club rather than a short commute to the practice facility that Dan Gilbert built for him.
