LB Steele Chambers (Official Thread)

I'm really high on Steele. We will be solid at RB next year with Teague, McCall, Crowley, Chambers and Williams.
But I thought we were doomed without an "elite" 2020 RB
In all seriousness, for all the talk of many of us wanting chambers at LB, I think RB will be a very good RB in a healthy rotation.

Ohio State 2019 Class Report — RB Steele Chambers

Steele-Chambers-Miami.jpg

Steele Chambers came to Ohio State from Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Roswell, Georgia where he was a 4-star recruit. Ranked the No. 11 athlete in the nation and the No. 231 player overall in the 2019 class, some schools recruited Chambers as a linebacker and others recruited him as a running back. He signed with the Buckeyes over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, and others.

2019 Season

Chambers did not enroll early as a freshman, choosing instead to arrive in the summer. That decision automatically put him behind tailback classmate Marcus Crowley, who enrolled in the winter and took part in workouts and spring ball.

“When you look at what we’ve done at running back, I think we’ve improved there,” Buckeye head coach Ryan Day said on signing day one year ago. “We lost Mike [Weber]. We lost Brian [Snead]. We get Steele and Marcus is already here doing a good job. Steele is somebody who is very, very talented, comes from a great family. Marcus, Gatorade Player of the Year. We improved our depth there. Those guys will both compete, Marcus in the spring, Steele in the preseason.”

Chambers (6-2 215) played in four games, securing his redshirt — should he eventually need it.

While he played in four games, he only carried the ball in three games, rushing for a total of 135 yards on 19 carries (7.1 ypc), scoring once. Five of his 19 carries went for at least 10 yards.

In those three games, he proved to be more elusive than the linebacker many coaches saw him as, though he also showed the kind of power that made you understand why linebacker wasn’t such an outrageous thought.

His last game for the Buckeyes was against Rutgers, which means he sat out Ohio State’s final four games — all against ranked opponents.

Chambers did get a little bit of experience against a ranked team earlier in the season, however, rushing for 16 yards on two carries in the 42-0 week two blowout of Cincinnati.

So Now What For Steele Chambers?

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2020 AND BEYOND FROM OHIO STATE'S 10 FRESHMEN WHO REDSHIRTED LAST SEASON

RB STEELE CHAMBERS

2019 in review: Chambers was on the field for 33 snaps, playing running back in three games against Cincinnati, Miami (Ohio) and Rutgers. He also played special teams in the blowout victory versus Nebraska. He had 19 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown.

A look toward 2020: As Eleven Warriors’ own Dan Hope wrote on Tuesday, Chambers has a chance to secure carries – or even start – if he has a strong offseason. Without J.K. Dobbins, the Buckeyes have a gigantic question at running back. Master Teague, Marcus Crowley, Demario McCall and Miyan Williams will be in the mix. But none of them are sure things. Chambers, the No. 231 overall prospect in 2019, has a chance to break through in the next seven months.

Long-term outlook: Much of Chambers’ long-term outlook will be determined by his role in 2020. As a June enrollee, he’s getting his first full offseason as a Buckeye. Should he take advantage of that and either start or split carries, his college career would take off at a rapid pace. If not, he wouldn’t have to fret. Ohio State isn’t exactly teeming with depth at running back, meaning Chambers wouldn’t have to wait long for his time.

RB Steele Chambers
As if Steele Chambers wasn’t already motivated enough to make a name for himself in the competition at tailback, he’ll have even more fuel available now that there seems to be so much pessimism at the position after Master Teague tore his Achilles and with Marcus Crowley out until sometime in the summer. The spring belongs to Chambers, and while Ohio State will be careful not to overwork him, he’s going to get as many reps as he can handle — which should only help in his development after redshirting last season. The young tailback has the ability to do anything the Buckeyes throw at him and looks physically ready to handle the grind at the position, and Chambers could use these 15 workouts to propel him into a key role by the fall.

RUNNING BACK STEELE CHAMBERS
Part of Day and Tony Alford had to feel grateful for spring practices getting canceled. Nothing else traumatic could happen to their running backs.

Master Teague suffered a torn Achilles tendon on the first practice of spring. Marcus Crowley already wasn’t practicing as he recovered from an injury. Miyan Williams won’t enroll until the summer. Steele Chambers, before spring practices wrapped up, was the only remaining healthy running back.

The former four-star athlete from Georgia had a prime opportunity to showcase his skillset in his first-ever spring, after joining the team last summer then redshirting as a freshman. Rather than getting that chance, though, Chambers’ spring stint with the first-team offense got cut short. The next time he takes the field with the Buckeyes, he’ll have to compete with Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon, along with whichever other running backs get healthy.

Lack of Spring Eliminated Huge Opportunity for Steele Chambers

Steele-Chambers-Practice-1170x780.jpg

When Master Teague went down with a leg injury at the start of spring practice, that left the Buckeyes with just Steele Chambers’ as the team’s only healthy full-time running back on scholarship.

So often in college football, an injury to a player provides an opportunity for another. Due to the physical nature of the sport, “Next man up” is the working title of most college football seasons. When somebody goes down, someone else steps up and takes those reps.

When Teague went down, Chambers stepped up and assumed reps with the ones. This was a pretty big jump for a guy who was the No. 4 or No. 5 running back the season before as a true freshman. Chambers played in four games, rushing for 135 yards on 19 carries, and maintained is redshirt.

He was fourth in rushing yardage and carries among the Buckeye running backs last year, with redshirt freshman Master Teague and true freshman Marcus Crowley both playing in more games and outrushing Chambers.

Being third in production in a trio of freshmen running backs is a good way to be pushed to the back of the line, but he found himself all alone in line this spring. Until things were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that is.

It was going to be a big spring for a running back who may have been overlooked by some, but despite the missed opportunity, Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford is still quite confident Chambers is moving in the right direction.

“He wasn’t overlooked from within our walls. But yeah he was anticipating getting a ton of reps, as we all were, and he was excited about that,” Alford said. “But in the reps that he did have, I think that he’s growing up.”

Practices may be done and gone, but it’s not like the players are on their own without any contact with the coaches. There are still team meetings and there is always contact between players and position coaches.
