LB Steele Chambers (Official Thread)

SHADOW OF A LEGEND. It looks like Steele Chambers will be wearing a legendary number throughout his Buckeye career, breaking out the 'ole No. 22 worn by Ohio State's first-ever Heisman Trophy winner, Les Horvath.

The number has been retired since 2000, but Chambers appears to have received permission to wear it, much like Justin Hilliard got permission to wear Chic Harley's No. 47.

I think retiring numbers is a bad, unrealistic idea for a school like Ohio State that has way too many great players and a roster of over 100 every year, but I'm a huge fan of players knowing the history of their jersey number and who wore it before them. I don't think that should be limited to guys seeking to wear a retired number.

FOOTBALL
Steele Chambers arrives at Ohio State as total athletic package
By John Brice
Published on June 13, 2019

Forget about picking a singular moment for Steele Chambers.

Not even what is believed to be a Georgia High School Association-record 58 career starts paints the full portrait.

The prep career closes in mural form for Steele Chambers; starts as a freshman, playing all over the field, shining in the playoffs and winning championships.

Pick one moment? Blessed Trinity Catholic veteran coach Tim McFarlin struggles with the task.

“He made a catch in the quarterfinals of the playoffs last year at a place called Thompson, and their stadium is called the ‘Brickyard,’” said McFarlin, whose time seeing Chambers shine stretches all the way to Chambers’ days in their feeder program. “We send him backdoor, quarterback bootlegs and our quarterback throws back to him, and it’s just an uncatchable ball that he caught.

“A moment where everybody looks at each other, no explanation for what just happened. He planes out, parallels the ground a good three or four feet, just one of those amazing plays.”

There’s more.

“Last year in the state championship, we lost our middle linebacker, JD Bertrand, he actually signed with Notre Dame, and we lost him in the semifinals,” McFarlin told Lettermen Row. “Steele made the move to essentially our middle linebacker spot sitting in the middle of box, calling our defense.

“I thought that was huge. You play an opponent as good as Cartersville, Trevor Lawrence’s school, you play them, you lose your main guy, the play-caller on defense and replace him with a guy like Steele? It gave us comfort.”

Not so much the opposition, McFarlin remembers.

“I’m friends with their coach and talked to him, and he said it was so discouraging to get out there and look and see you moved Steele there to the middle. His presence added so much value.”

There’s big-time college football eyes behind those words as well, McFarlin explains. Blessed Trinity’s defensive coordinator is John Thompson, whose career includes stints as defensive coordinator at Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss and South Carolina among myriad stops.

“Our defensive coordinator, John Thompson, we have always said Steele is one of the very few guys who could step into college football and play on either side,” says McFarlin, whose program is two-time defending Georgia AAAA champions. “He played two years at safety, two years closer to the box. Credit Coach Thompson with that.

“And in that same Thompson game I mentioned, I saw Steele run a guy down on the jet sweep. The head coach at Thompson and I had many conversations on that. He said, ‘Coach, [Chambers] eliminated that side of the field for us. We couldn’t run it over there.

“We’re going to miss him, I can tell you that.”

Saw a video that had Steele catching the ball out of the backfield...dude looks like Todd Gurley out there! He’s already huge! Also went and looked at his offensive numbers from HS for the first time since it appears he will be playing offense. Rushed for 1,500 yards three years in a row and averaged over 11 ypc for his career. That’s some damn good numbers, especially for GA competition.

One reason I’m not terribly concerned about RB recruiting for 2020 because I think Chambers is a legit Big Ten stud. You don’t lead your high school team to two Class 4A Georgia state titles and end Trevor Lawrence’s win streak if you’re a push over.

11+ ypc at that level in GA is insane! Had he been getting 25 carries per game he would have gone well over 2,000 yards per season and 40 TD’s. I’m excited for him!

This is the video that made me go back and start looking at him closer. Not that he did anything impressive here, I had just forgot about him and certainly wasn’t expecting him to be with the RB’s. He’s #22.

Appreciate it!

Yea he looks really big to me... also pretty good burst obviously.

Edited: Forgot he was 6 foot 2 and watched his film in hudl... he may have the biggest legs I've ever seen for a RB. He's an interesting possibility in the future!

He's going to be a good one! Should Dobbins leave after this season we still have:
McCall
Teague
Crowley
Chambers

That's more than a pair and a spare as they say. Very solid backfield. And Chambers looks to be the biggest and most athletic of the group. Me likey!
