LB Steele Chambers (Official Thread)

I could see in him in the very limited reps he got early on that he had a chance to be special for this Defense. His read-and-react is better than anyone else's we have on this defensive roster and his athleticism makes him impact the game. He's really only a half season in at LB considering how little he got to play the first 4 or 5 weeks. I think seeing him play downhill has also been a boost for Tommy Eichenberg because now his play seems to be coming on as well. What was a weakness is now becoming a strength. Just need a safety to come on like gangbusters but I love how Chambers plays linebacker.

That is a great point, once Chambers started at LB, Tommy started playing much better it seemed. Chambers might be our best player on defense (other than maybe Burke and Garrett). Crazy how these things work out.

“It feels like I’m just playing out in the yard like a little kid,” Chambers said. “It’s just fun again. As linebackers say, FOB, finish on the ball. Whenever you don’t really know what to do, you can just run as fast as you can to the ball and try and make the tackle. That’s why it’s easier for me on defense.”

It was not an instant transition, however. Chambers said there was some self doubt when he did not see immediate results in preseason camp.

“It took some time,” he said. “Throughout the summer, I was pissed off being out here. I was trying to learn the defense and feeling like I was behind everyone. Probably after game four or five, I started getting the hang of it and I was having fun.”

Learning the basic fundamentals and techniques needed at the linebacker spot were critical, Chambers said.

“I came into the linebacker room and I was behind in terms of using my hands and things like that,” he said. “There were a few games where the quarterback was making checks at the line and helped me knowing what the calls they were making.”

The results came slowly and Chambers had a breakthrough game Oct. 9 against Maryland as he tallied a career-best seven tackles with a sack.

He had six tackles and an interception in OSU’s win at Nebraska, tallying all of those in the second half after sitting out the first half due to a targeting call. He also logged six tackles in the season-ending loss to Michigan. Now, with the Buckeyes preparing for Utah in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, Chambers has used bowl practice to brush up on the basics.

“Once the season got going, there was a lot of game planning and I got away from a lot of the fundamentals we had been hitting on during the spring and summer,” he said. “Working on that should be good for me and the team.”

Michigan put up 42 points in its first rivalry win in a decade, and gashed Ohio State for nearly 300 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Afterward, Wolverine offensive coordinator Josh Gattis questioned the toughness of the Buckeye defense and referred to the group as a “finesse” team.

While some Buckeyes understandably took umbrage to the comment, Chambers – who admittedly had one of his poorest performances of the season against Michigan – actually agreed with it.

“It definitely stung, but at the end of the day, he was right,” Chambers said. “I personally thought we played pretty soft, me included – probably one of the bigger ones. But it just lights a fire under us, hopefully we can get ready for next year.”

Chambers said the loss, and his performance in particular, highlighted some of the elements of his game that he must improve to reach his full potential at linebacker. Chambers said he was one of the Buckeyes, along with C.J. Stroud, that suffered from the flu during The Game, and that he actually lost five to 10 pounds due to the illness. In order to better handle the physical demands of an inside linebacker, Chambers said he will have to gain back that weight plus another 10 pounds.

Are we still talking about excuses we better get over it ..we can’t just expect the plan we had last year will work if we have no “flu”.

Can we stop calling them excuses? I get you guys are still hurting over the loss, but come on.

Telling someone who asked that you had the flu isn’t an excuse. Saying you needed to play better is taking accountability.

Yes, we fans are talking about excuses because that rhetoric scratches some insatiable itch of some to be mad at their team.

Is Steele making excuses? No, and that was obvious from a 15 second skim of the post above yours.

He agreed with the Michigan coach trolling/callout and singled himself out. Saying his play was one of the biggest offenders as far as playing soft.

You get through it, you work past it. But rarely does someone ever "get over" something they pour a great deal of time and passion into that just doesn't turn out in your favor.

So you admit to yourself what happened, as it happened with no sugar coating. Then bust ass and make damn sure it doesn't happen again.

Steele's words, in a world possessed of avoiding nuance and responsibility, are beyond his years. He admitted to playing poorly and that the opposing coaches who called him out weren't wrong. He then followed it up by all by sharing his plan for improvement.

At this point I'm convinced you lack any reading comprehension. You read the words, but that processing phase between the reading and typing is all sorts of a mess.

“I think it went better than I expected,” Chambers said last month. “I went into the season thinking I would somewhat be a key role, maybe in some packages and stuff. And the way stuff’s turned out, I feel like I’m a pretty vital part of this defense so far. So I’m pretty glad with how it turned out.”

Chambers finished fifth on the team with 47 tackles in 13 games. He eventually won the starting Will linebacker job during the season and ended up leading the Buckeye linebackers in snaps in each of the final four games of the season.

It wasn’t easy, however, and Chambers has admitted as such. But the days of wondering about his Buckeye future and pondering a move to baseball are now gone and his present as a linebacker has Chambers excited for what is yet to come.

“I feel like my potential’s pretty high. I feel like there’s still a lot of stuff I can work on. Start learning from linebackers from the past. Work on fundamentals. But I feel like I got a lot of room to improve,” he said.

As long as he stays healthy, I can see Chambers doubling his is tackle numbers next year. He should thrive in Knowles' system

Actually I would prefer the defense spending a lot less time on the field and having a lot fewer tackles next year. I'd love to see him have the same number of tackles but a lot higher percentage of the team's tackles (because of 3 and outs and turnovers).
