LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

Ryan Shazier could be a first-round pick, but is he big enough to excel in the NFL? Draft Stock Report

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ryan Shazier said he was slightly leaning toward returning to Ohio State for his senior season. Given his small frame, however, he probably needs to lean a lot further before he makes a decision.

The speedy but slender linebacker leads the Buckeyes with 134 tackles and 22.5 tackles for loss. He has twice this season been named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Week and he was selected to the all-conference first-team.

CBS Sports NFL draft expert Dane Brugler projects Shazier as a top-five linebacker prospect and a potential first-round pick should he opt to forgo his senior season.

Brugler lauded his "explosive first step," his "good backfield vision to sniff out plays," and his "very good timing," which allows him to be an "above average" blitzer.

So what's the hold-up?

Starting immediately before their games I'm going to have the little kids basketball team I coach say the "we show no mercy…everybody dies" chant that Shazier and the players said before the Michigan St game…I'm sure the parents and district will find it totally cool and appropriate

If the NFL concern is his size... not sure how you deal with that
Can he possibly get to 245.. even if he lives in the weight room..
because that seems like the dividing line between Round 1 and Round 2

He can play in the NFL...but the All-Pro fellas are like 6'4 and 255+.. Josh Perry size
Mingo is 240 and they say he's way too small...
Dion Jordan was 6'6 and 250 (so is Anthony Barr)
Jarvas Jones was 245 (so is Khalik Mack)

Wonder what he'd be like as a safety if he stays next year?

Lavonte David is listed at 6'1, 233, and he has 280+ tackles, 8 sacks, 6 INTs in two years in the league; seems like a reasonable comparison for Shazier's skill-set.

I wonder if last night's performance makes it more likely that Ryan will return for his senior season. Everyone has bad games, but he seemed to disappear, so if he truly was on the fence before last night's game, he may be more likely to return now.

Not a great game for sure by Ryan last night...but I still think he's goes pro. Multiple mocks have him first round. He'll impress at the combine and be fine....but be greatly missed by a greatful Buckeye Nation.

He had to have been sick or hurt because I have never seen him play like he did last night. He was a ghost on the field. Slow, timid, and lost - which are polar opposites of his usual play.

Clemson had a very good offense, but still (in my opinion) he was capable of playing much better. Undoubtedly he won't make any public excuses for his "less than stellar" play last night: however, I have to think it didn't help his potential NFL draft position.

I thought he'd be a first rounder, but after hearing the nfl report of a 2nd rounder and truly not knowing about what position he would be, and seeing the way he played against an athletic offense, I think he will be a 2nd rounder now.

But that's not to say he shouldn't go. Just the fact that he won't be a first round pick.

Does he project as a OLB or as a SS. I always thought he was a little undersized for the LB position. Second round is the boundary. If he really needs the money, then he should go, but second round means that with some improvement he could be first round, which is a lot more money. In his case that mostly means, will he be able to rely on the surrounding talent and not try to do everything himself. Really tough decision.
