LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

Mike Farrell was on Rivals Radio this morning talking about how Shazier was one of the hardest recruits to rank because he is a hybrid LB/DE...definitely thinks he is a 4 star but could be ranked even higher because of how athletic and quick he is...thinks he will fit in great at OSU

Farrell seems to agree with what a lot of BPers have been saying:

Normally you try to find positions for a kid. Sometimes, positions just happen. Shazier is going to be a crazy LEO for the Buckeyes. The position was made for him.

To me, he looks like he is molded perfectly for the LEO position here.

I'm with you on that one, IMO this is the perfect replacement for what we were hoping for in Jamel Turner.

(love that comparison)

It is not always a good thing to get the "best" players or the higher ranked players. Getting the guy that fits your scheme is the way to do it. Shazier fits what we do on defense. He is the perfect LEO. He is only a 4 star according to the recruiting sites but it's pretty obvious that Tressel sees him as a 5 star in the Buckeye defense.

bucknut502;1836521; said:
... my point is, Rivals has him as the 12th best OLB and Scout has him at 8. But Tress probably believes he is the #1 player in the class to play the LEO. None of the guys ranked ahead of him can play that position as well as Shazier.

Great points guys

Perhaps Muschamp's god-like reputation as a recruiter has been slightly exaggerated.

I see two issues with that statement:

1. Name me a coach who doesn't struggle with attrition when he replaces an old coach. They have no relationship with the player while other teams' coaches have been recruiting him and building a relationship with him for over a year. I do not know personally how recruiting goes, but I imagine that, regardless of what the NCAA would say, the recruit picks a coach, not a school.

2. Now as for you believing hyperbole as even being possibly, that is a whole other issue. That anyone would have a "god-like reputation as a recruiter" is likely because someone needs something to write about so that everyone else will pay their $49.99 a year or whatever it is these days. I doubt anyone actually believes that.

I guess what I am saying is that these things will happen. You cannot judge a coach's recruiting prowess on his ability to keep kids committed who don't know who you are.

EDIT: But, that doesn't mean we shouldn't sit back and enjoy it when other schools are suffering. Schadenfreude, FTW!

I think another problem with Muschamp right now is that he hasn't hired a staff, so he can't tell recruits who their position coaches will be.

At least this is what a lot of Gator fans are saying.

Class of 2011 LB superlatives - ESPN

Best blitzers

What we look for:
These players are savvy with the ability to disguise the pressure, anticipate the snap and make themselves thin when needed. An explosive first step and the ability to accelerate to full speed quickly are necessary. The players find the correct seam at full speed, attack from different angles and possess good bend with hand technique coming off the edge. The best blitzers come with reckless abandon, close fast and deliver high-impact, tempo-changing hits.

Ryan Shazier (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation)
The future Buckeye's high upside as a college blitzer places him on this list. An end in high school, we expect Shazier to slide back to linebacker in Columbus and terrorize opposing offenses as a heavy pressure defender. The sack master has good get-off but it's his length and arsenal of pass-rushing moves, including a good rip and push-pull, that make his upside as a college blitzer so promising.

Dang, I paid $77. :sad2:

In all seriousness though, best of luck to Ryan's folks. Get well soon!
