LB Raekwon McMillan (Official Thread)

THREE POTENTIAL BREAKOUT PLAYERS FOR OHIO STATE'S 2015 SEASON

RAEKWON MCMILLAN

It may seem like cheating to pick someone like Raekwon McMillan for this final spot, but truth be told, we didn’t see a ton of McMillan during his freshman season, especially down the stretch. He rotated with Curtis Grant for the majority of the season, but during Ohio State’s late-season run it was Grant who saw most of the snaps.

At the middle linebacker position, McMillan will be called on to lead the veteran linebackers playing beside him: Lee and Joshua Perry. But the 6-foot-2, 250-pound sophomore has an opportunity to make a name for himself and turn into an All-Big Ten performer.

When it comes to McMillan, a breakout season means he becomes a superstar on Ohio State's defense.

RAEKWON MCMILLAN: 'MY BIGGEST GOAL FOR ME IS TO BECOME THE CAPTAIN OF THE DEFENSE'

As he was preparing to take over full-time as Ohio State's starting middle linebacker, Raekwon McMillan received some advice in the offseason from a former Buckeyes great, one who is currently starring in the NFL at the same position.

"James Laurinaitis, I spent a little time talking to him this offseason," McMillan said Wednesday following Ohio State's third practice of fall camp. "Talking to him, just picking his mind about our defense and some of the things he did while he was in college."

Throughout his career in Columbus, Laurinaitis was the face of the Buckeyes' defense. He was a two-time All-American, and a Nagurski and Butkus Award winner. Now, Laurinaitis in a star in the NFL for the St. Louis Rams and one of the best linebackers in the league.

So what did the former Buckeye great say to McMillan, who is projected by many to have a breakout season in 2015?

KWON YOU DIG IT?

In his first year as the starting middle linebacker after backing up Curtis Grant as a true freshman, Raekwon McMillan is easing into his role.

Against Western Michigan, McMillan had his most prolific day as a Buckeye with 16 tackles, a sack and a hurry. In the first half alone he tallied 11 stops.

McMillan hasn't made as many big plays as some might have expected but his sack yesterday was one such instance. With Ohio State leading 7-0 and the Broncos running their 11th play of a drive, McMillan picked up a sack for a four yard loss throwing WMU off schedule. Three plays later they would miss a 47-yard field goal.

Despite the 16 tackles, I read numerous comments criticizing McMillan for being out of position on both runs and passes alike. To my eyes, it did appear he got lost in pass defense a couple times which is often the last piece of the puzzle for a young linebacker but the larger problem against the run was the line not always absorbing guys thus creating seams for linebackers to make plays. That's not to say McMillan was in perfect position on every rush as WMU had success running up the middle in the first half but in large part, McMillan was around the football all day long and 16 tackles is hard to sneeze at period.

Through four games, McMillan is averaging 10 tackles. Sounds solid to me. Plus, he's only going to get better with increased reps.

Just sayin': I was at the game and would never have guessed he made 16 tackles.

My son and I were watching #5 on quite a few plays. He did miss two tackles the first two possessions. He stepped it up after the first quarter we both thought. He made quite a few plays. The WMU line did a very good job of controlling the LOS but I also have never seen an OLine hold like they were. It was incredible. At one time I coached OLine in High School and taught my players how to hold and we actually practiced how to hold, but I have never seen anything like WMU. They did get several big plays called back on holding calls, but man I bet if you asked some of the Silver Bullets they would tell you they have never been held worse in a game in their careers.

Fleck was quoted after the game saying something like this:

"Heck ya we held. I had a freshman trying to block Joey Bosa"

OHIO STATE'S RAEKWON MCMILLAN HAD ASPIRATIONS TO PLAY RUNNING BACK, BUT ALWAYS KNEW HE'D END UP A LINEBACKER

Ohio State fans are well aware of the recruitment of linebacker Raekwon McMillan, the five-star prospect from Hinesville, Ga., who was the Buckeyes' crowned jewel in their 2014 recruiting class.

But what some may not know is McMillan had aspirations of playing in college on the offensive side of the ball. At least in his mind, anyway.

So on Monday, when a reporter asked McMillan about his high school days, the eyes of Ohio State's middle linebacker lit up and a giant smile flashed across his face. He finally got to reminisce on his days at running back.

"Thank you for asking," McMillan said, with that giant smile. "I forget the name of the team we played, but I had 146 [yards] and three touchdowns. The team that beat us the year before, we came back and beat them by three touchdowns my senior year."

Thought I read he was having migraines or migraine symptoms
Confirmed. Just found it in an o-zone article:
+ Middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan had a migraine coming into the game. Fickell said he loves his players because anyone will put their limbs on the line. Mentioned both Cam Williams but also Chris Worley, who was in on the last play of the game.
Thanks.
