LB Raekwon McMillan (Official Thread)

What's your take on who starts at the other DE spot and CB spot to replace Frazier/Miller tandem and Grant? Also, who steps up at DT to replace Bennett? Shutt, Hill? Someone else? BTW - no way should Washington enter the draft. He needs another year, imho.
At DE I think a combo of Slade, Holmes, and Hubbard. With Hubbard as my dark horse to start due to it sounds like we just moved him around too much and by the time we saw how good he has at DE it was too late to burn his shirt.

As for the corner it'll be Webb. I know Conley has played some this year but he's been getting burnt every time he subs in. Not a knock on Conley but I personally see him as a depth guy for his career. Just too much talent with Webb and Lattimore.

As far as at DT Schutt will start no doubt but this is the position to watch for next year. We desperately need Hill, Munger, and my dark horse with the new kid from wayne HS. The reason why Washington shouldn't go pro is while his measurables are ready he really has bounced around a lot from a position standpoint. With Bosa and Bennett taking the spotlight away he really has the opportunity next year to be robin to Bosa's batman

If Washington returns next year (and he should IMO) then in my head we will have 6 of our starting front 7 returning because lets be honest he's at worse on equal footing with Grant. To me that'll mean 9 of 11 returning on defense.

Also I read somewhere (not sure where but I think it was here) that Kwon' didn't have the athletic ability which is why he struggles in coverage. That's such BS I don't even know where to start. He struggles AT TIMES in coverage because the college game is much more complex in the passing routes and the reads but rest assured it has nothing to do with his ability.
8 of 11. Grant at DB, then 2 DL. So then also 5 of the front 7, not 6. And I may also add Perry to the list of defensive players who may consider leaving.

If nobody leaves early we'll have a stacked team. Returning 8/11 from both sides of the ball.

If Perry leaves early, that would be a huge blow to the D next year. Listening to him speak in interviews, he comes off very educated and reserved. I can see hI'm being the leader of the D next season.

If Hubbard is all Urb's makes him out to be, he is definitely going to see the field at DE next year. Lewis is also a possibility. I recall seeing him play against Wisky in the B1G championship game. Lot's of young guys and so there will be a lot of competition. We need 2 or 3 DE's to step up. One to start and a couple to make the two deep. We may improve on rushing the passer but not sure yet about how these young bucks will defend against the run. Miller and Frazier have done a good job at the latter.

DT is my greatest concern. Shutt appears to be the guy. He is a different kind of player than Bennett though and we are going to miss Bennett's quickness inside. Maybe Munger can fill that role?

Webb is good call. I think he and Apple will make a really solid set of cover corners.

The defense will be stacked, especially if Kwon takes it to the next level. I think Holmes will be ready to step up at the other DE spot (with Slade/Lewis getting plenty of time...interested to see if Dylan Thompson makes some noise...also Hubbard could make a big impact if he puts on some lbs.) and at least one of Reeves/Conley/Webb/Lattimore will step up across from Apple. The biggest loss will be Bennett...Diesel will need to step up big time and cause disruption like Bennett. If he does, Schutt will do his job and plug gaps. But we may need a freshman to step up there if Munger and Hill do not step it up...I still really like Hill and think he can come up big. However, Cornell/Landers and however else they get (hopefully Gallimore, he is the most game ready) will have an opportunity to make an early impact. We need someone else other than Diesel and Schutt to step up though in the rotation...really need to keep Kwon & Co. free to their business.

Grant took some bad angles into tackles and missed a few as well early on. I was waiting for Kwon to get more reps but didn't happen. Grant did make some big plays down the stretch but I haven't watched the game again to accurately assess his overall performance. Kwon is a difference maker.

IN PLACE OF DEPARTED LEADER CURTIS GRANT, RAEKWON MCMILLAN EMBRACES THE EXPECTATIONS OHIO STATE HAS FOR HIM

Initially, Raekwon McMillan wasn't sure if he would be able to handle his new role at Ohio State.

That's not to say he wasn't physically ready by any means, with all the recruiting laurels and expectations that come with being a five-star recruit from the south. The praise and hype surrounding a big-time recruit typically translates to a starting spot on the field from Day One, but McMillan found himself in a dogfight with senior Curtis Grant — a guy doing everything in his power to keep his spot in the lineup.

The two were friends and both saw time, but by season's end, Grant's on-field leadership qualities meant he got the nod over McMillan during the team's run at the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship.

"I was kind of uncomfortable last year, not being a starter," McMillan said Thursday. "Starting your whole career and then coming to college and not being in the starting lineup, it made me work harder in practice. So I'm thankful for it."

The assumptions of greatness for McMillan were surely merited — at a solid 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, he looks the part when you think of stud linebackers at a place like Ohio State. But he had to take a backseat to Grant when it mattered most on the field. That's what happens when you're behind a capable senior.

Urban on The Chef:

Last year, you signed the top linebacker out of Georgia, Liberty County’s Raekwon McMillan. How is his development coming along after his freshman year?

“He’s aces, man. He’s an even better person leading than a player, and he’s a hell of a player. So that tells you what we got in that one. He’s a guy that shows up every day (in football), and he does great in the classroom and in the community. He should be a team captain one day at Ohio State.”

So he’s living up to the recruiting hype?

“Yes. We bought into the hype when we recruited him. He’s a little better than (he was being hyped). He has got all the intangibles that you hope to get with a player. We got them with this guy.”

Can't wait to see Kwon go off this year. Should be fun to watch.
