LB Raekwon McMillan (Official Thread)

I'm just not sold on him at all and the way he got stiffed armed in that game was kinds funny if your PSU fan He's not a Katz or Hawk
That's the key. He has the talent but these award lists tend to be extremely lazy.

I'm not sure if he's a top-2 LB on this team yet. I'm certain he's not the best on the team at this point. He has the potential but this is too soon.

He's doing a better than solid job with some obvious lapses in his first year as a starter at MLB. That's really better than anyone should expect, even with the rankings coming in, etc. (witness Grant's tOSU tenure). It's a tougher gig than playing outside. Next year should be the season that he really takes off and is a legitimate Butkus candidate.

Buckeye Football Notebook: Texting With the Enemy

Ohio State starting middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan was one of the nation's most-sought after recruits in the 2014 class. As such, he was part of the recruiting circuit that has a way of bringing blue chip prospects together and creating friendships with players who ultimately end up at other schools.

For McMillan, one such friend is Deshaun Watson, quarterback of the No. 1 Clemson Tigers. Both players played their high school football in Georgia and both players ended up leaving the state. Despite their separate ways, the two have remained close.

In fact, the two were texting this past Tuesday night when the College Football Playoff rankings were released.

"I was talking to Deshaun Watson while we were watching it," McMillan said on Monday. "We were good friends during recruitment and stuff like that. We were just talking and we were just happy for each other and happy to see each other progressing and our teams getting better and whatnot and hopefully we can meet up one day in the playoff."

Their relationship was strong enough during recruiting that Watson tried his best to get McMillan to join him at Clemson.

"I mean we ended up taking different paths, but while he ended up at Clemson and he committed early, he was pressing me hard to come to Clemson," he said. "I took that different path, but he was always a cool guy, always down to earth. Even though he wanted me to come to Clemson, he always was in for my best interest and the head coach at Clemson too, Coach Swinney, they always wanted my best interest. And even when I decided to come to Ohio State, they still called me afterwards and told me congratulations and whatnot. After we won the national championship, those were some of the first guys I talked to after the game."

Wait, what?

Dabo Swinney called McMillan to congratulate him after the Buckeyes' won the national title?

"Yeah," he said. "Me and him talked after the national championship. He just told me congratulations and Coach Jeff Scott, the wide receivers coach who was my recruiter at the time."

already named a 2016 team captain by Coach Meyer

WHY WAS OHIO STATE LINEBACKER RAEKWON MCMILLAN ALREADY NAMED A CAPTAIN FOR 2016? 'HE WAS READY WHEN HE WALKED IN THE DOOR'

Urban Meyer made it pretty clear he intends to do things a little differently for 2016 when he announced captains Thursday for a season still eight months away. Meyer usually leaves that decision up to the players on Ohio State’s team and waits until the season is closer before having that vote, but he felt it was something important to establish very early with what’s going to be an extremely young group next season.

“The one thing is we have very good leadership,” Meyer said of the future. “Pat Elflein is a captain. J.T. Barrett is a captain. Raekwon McMillan is a captain. Coach [Mickey Marotti] and I are working on that, we’re jumping the gun a little bit. But those are three captains that we’re not waiting until August. It’s done.”

None of the three being named captain is really a surprise. The timing is a little unique, but the underlying message is clear: The Buckeyes will rely heavily on the guys who have been there before.

Barrett, of course, is the team’s starting quarterback and is entering his third season at the helm. He was also a captain during the 2015 season. Elflein will be a fifth-year senior who will also be entering his third year as a starter. He’s a guy Meyer lauded all throughout 2015 as one of his best leaders who was not named a captain.

McMillan isn’t all that surprising either being that Ohio State returns just three starters on defense and he’s the guy in the middle. For many, though, it feels like just yesterday he was a freshman rotating in with Curtis Grant at middle linebacker.

And even though McMillan is the youngest of the three captains named for 2016, this is something that was a long time coming.

“[McMillan] was ready when he walked in the door, to be honest with you,” Ohio State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell said. “Everyone has different definitions of leadership and I try to make mine really simple: Not to change up from what the head coach’s is, but those who can make others around him better.”

AREAS RAEKWON MCMILLAN CAN AND MUST IMPROVE UPON FOR 2016

67889_h.jpg,qitok=0EeKgdYw.pagespeed.ce.fPrcVBpiTd.jpg

Mike linebacker Raekwon McMillan is the lone returning starter from his position group in 2016 and one of only three returning starters (Gareon Conley , Tyquan Lewis) from Ohio State’s entire 2015 starting defense. The 6-foot-2 junior-to-be from Hinesville, GA, played a lot of snaps as a sophomore while still learning his position at the college level on the fly.

But 2016 is a season where much more will be expected of the former top-ranked linebacker prospect. His role and responsibilities will expand and, as a returning starter, he’ll be expected to make plays and take his game to the next level. Here are some areas of his game in which he should look to improve in 2016.

LEADERSHIP
Raekwon has already been named a captain for the 2016 Buckeyes. He’s got big shoes to fill with the likes of Josh Perry gone from his position group, as well as other on-field leaders such as Adolphus Washington, Eli Apple, Vonn Bell, Tyvis Powell, Darron Lee, Joey Bosa, and Tommy Schutt.

The best middle linebackers tend to be the team’s defensive field general. McMillan hasn’t displayed such qualities yet. With his third season in the program coming up, it’s time for that part of his game to show. In college football, players often become leaders simply by making plays. But there are off-the-field components to being a complete leader, which include spending more time in film study, taking younger players under their wings to correct errors, and picking guys up when they make mistakes. Not everyone needs to be vocal to be a leader, but that can help.

CREATING TURNOVERS
McMillan led the Buckeyes with 119 tackles and 57 unassisted stops last year, so he was around the ball a lot. Despite that, he intercepted no passes in 2015 and failed to force a fumble. He did manage to recover one opposition fumble, however. He also broke up four passes, so it’s not as if he struggles to get his hands into passing lanes.

Players that log as many snaps as Raekwon at the position he plays should be counted on to create takeaways. When looking back at players like James Laurinaitis, A.J. Hawk, Chris Spielman and others, one sees guys who made game-changing plays at the position. Raekwon is a physical, athletic player. He’s got the tools to create turnovers and he needs to put those tools to good use.

I call BS on the turnovers thing.

1) Other than Laurinaitis against Texas in 2006 I can't recall a linebacker making a huge difference in a big game in the turnover department.

2) Who really cares where the turnovers come from (or if they happen at all) if the defense is playing well and the team is winning games.

To say that Raekwon himself must create turnovers is pretty dumb.
