"I think just the type of players that they have on the team and just how competitive the environment is, it just really fits me the way that they're coached, the way they practice and the way their defense is ran," Pierce said of why he committed to the Buckeyes. "I just really think it fits me better than all the other schools I've been recruited to. The environment is one I want to be in, you're with a bunch of guys that want to be the best, have the standard of being the best and are going to college to be the best. I want to be a part of it and lead those guys in my class. I also have great relationships with the coaches, I feel like they not only can make me the best player I can be but also the best person."

"I've already talked to some guys and they're talking about how they're going to commit soon," Pierce said. "I haven't really talked to any defensive linemen yet, so I might text Nigel Smith, he lives right down the road from me. We just need to build this class defensively, we're stacked offensively and there's still more people to get, but I think having that big D-line in front of the linebackers makes our job a lot easier. So finding the best D-linemen to play with the best defensive line coach in the country is really important."

Eight of Ohio State’s 10 commitments so far are on the offensive side of the ball, while the two defensive commitments, Pierce and in-state prospect Garrett Stover, are both linebackers. After Pierce got off the phone with Day, Knowles and Laurinaitis, he sent a text to Stover informing him of his decision. Stover immediately called Pierce, enthusiastic about the news.

"I texted him right after I got off the phone with the coaches on Thursday and told him I'm in," Pierce said. "He called me right when I sent him a text, didn't even send a text back. He was super excited and pumped. He was almost yelling into the phone with how excited he was. It made me feel better about my decision because those are the type of guys I want to be around, who will support you and stuff. That's exactly how I would have responded and it's safe to say there's guys on Ohio State that are similar to me and like-minded.

Also a two time state wrestling champ!! That is extra gravy on the plate!
BOOOOOOOMMMMMMM! Absolutely thrilled with this commitment, I'm incredibly high on Pierce and he will pair with Stover like a mordeaux and boursin cheese...likely a bad metaphor, but you get the idea. Love the way this kid plays. Welcome Payton!

And to my quoted post, had no idea he was a 2x State wrestling champ, that's amazing! It's no secret I love my recruits with a wrestling background. Really big pickup and hopefully leads to an onslaught of defensive commits.

I know the past few years there was Hicks and Montgomery leading the charge, and maybe it's only because I'm following this class more closely than the last few, but this class just feels different to me. We'll see what happens come December and February and the next few years, but it feels special.
