LB Payton Pierce (Official Thread)

I love this kid.

Stylistically and fundamentally, Payton is a Tressel Era throwback to when we were churning out 1st team AA's every year. I was already sold on him watching his sophomore year film with that heinous speed, but his massive progression from that to his junior film has to make our staff salivate. It shows off some of his coverage skills and decision making prowess. He added a lot to his toolbox in 12 months

And oh yeah... he already looks friggin awesome in S&G (attaching his YouTube Jr film since it looks like it's not on Hudl)

Jesus this kid is built! He could wear an S&G jersey now and I’d swear he was A member of the team

Bigger Pete Werner to me, watching his film that is what I see in terms of OSU LB comparisons. And I think that mostly because he can be a very good coverage LB and tackler, which is crucial in modern college football.

Pierce on his visit for the Ped St game:
“Ohio State’s game-day environment is the best environment I’ve seen!

There wasn’t an open seat and with everyone wearing scarlet it was pretty cool. They definitely had the home-field advantage. Every third down on defense I couldn’t even hear myself think it was so loud.

Ohio State continues to impress me even more every week with their toughness. The defense is playing lights out while the offense comes up time and time again in big situations. If they keep doing what they’re doing I don’t see anyone stopping this team from winning a National Championship.”

Payton Pierce, 2024 Top247 four-star LB, Ohio State commit (in-person coverage): Pierce set the tone early in Lovejoy's win at Melissa with a few physical hits and a first-quarter sack. A former state champion wrestler, Pierce definitely shows great take-down skills on the field as he caused chaos on the interior for Melissa's running game. Pierce is adequate playing in space and dropping into coverage, but he's at his best as a downhill defender playing between the hashes. -- Roach

Senior Film (just released an hour ago)

GREAT instincts for the position. Would make a good Will, but he's perfect for Mike with his instincts. He's been coached well. Knowles & Laurinatis are gonna love working with this kid. I'm really excited to have Payton in this class with Eichenberg heading to the league and Reid Carico now in the portal

Pierce will be an early enrollee at Ohio State and arrive on campus in January, but he’ll be dealing with a setback in his first collegiate semester. In his final prep game on Dec. 2, Pierce suffered an ankle injury and says he’ll be sidelined for a significant amount of time. He’ll use his first collegiate semester to rehab the ankle and dive into learning Ohio State’s defensive scheme.

“Getting healthy,” Pierce said when asked what his biggest priority was for his main goal as an early enrollee. “I’ve got a hurt ankle right now, so that’s my first priority is getting this ankle healed and getting back on the field with my guys. It was a tear, so I’m out for a while.”

Pierce will have a busy month before arriving on campus.

The Texas linebacker said he planned on being at a few US Army Bowl practices before the annual recruiting All-Star game on Monday and will cheer on future teammates Devontae, Deontae Armstrong and Damarion Witten. With Dallas less than an hour from his hometown, he’ll also be at Ohio State’s Cotton Bowl practices and attend the Buckeyes’ game against Missouri.

Earlier this year, Pierce was selected to play in NBC’s annual All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 6. While he won’t be able to participate in the contest due to his injury, Pierce still plans on attending the festivities in San Antonio. He plans on leaving for Columbus with fellow linebacker commit Garrett Stover following the game.

“We talk weekly,” Pierce said of him and Stover. “I was talking to him a couple of days ago about my ankle and stuff. I think we’re flying out together from the All-American Bowl to campus to get our dorms set and everything. We’ve been talking about that a lot.”
Once he arrives on campus, Pierce will have a long recovery ahead of him. But he’s still anticipating the first moment he takes the practice field at Ohio State.

“I’m going to go in there and go compete right when I get back,” Pierce said. “Cody (Simon) is a great guy to learn from. I hit it off with him on my official visit, I really like him a lot. He’ll be good to learn from and having all these guys in the room makes me a better linebacker. When I get back, I’ll be ready to compete with them.”
