Timeout with Marcus Freeman

Who did you look up to as a player when you were a kid?
"It's hard not to say (former Wayne and Ohio State receiver) John Hollins. He was an older guy who had been at our high school and came to Ohio State. You say, 'I want to be like him some day.' Maybe he didn't play the same position, but he's a good guy. He's got good character. And he was a great football player. He was a role model for me."
What are your best assets as a player?
"My speed is one thing. That might be a strong point. But I have my weak points that I need to work on to be a good linebacker here ? work to get off blockers, work on being a sure tackler and being more explosive and physical at the point of attack."
Do you get recognized more now that you're a starter?
"People back home are going to recognize you more and want to talk to you more. I went into my bank and said, 'I'm Marcus Freeman.' People were saying, 'Good luck' and 'Go Bucks.' That comes with being at Ohio State, but it also means you have to watch what you do because people are going to notice. I try to represent the community I came from the best I can."
What's it like going against bruising freshman tailback Chris Wells in practice?
"I see a competitor in Chris Wells. He wants to get on the field ? just like every freshman would. He's behind a great running back in Antonio Pittman, but his time will come."
What's up with the Big Ten taking it on the chin last week with Northwestern losing to Division I-AA New Hampshire and several other near upsets?
"The Big Ten plays some tough teams around the nation. I know when we get into conference play, each team will be ready to go ? and we'll show the world how good we are."
