Region four
Whiting is a big winner, and so is Trinity
By Chris Fisher
Special to The Courier-Journal

The Region Four heavyweight wrestling final had a football flavor to it.

Two of Louisville's more-sought-after football recruits breezed into yesterday's final, where Trinity's Jordan Whiting pinned Central's Mister Cobble to help the third-ranked Shamrocks win their fourth consecutive regional crown.

Whiting, ranked No. 4 in the state, is also one of the top linebackers in the country and has committed to Ohio State; Cobble is one of the state's top linemen and is being recruited by the University of Kentucky among others.

Whiting, who started wrestling five years ago at 134 pounds and now competes at 225 pounds, said wrestling has its benefits.

"It makes you a better football player," he said. "There's no better sport for conditioning. It helps with flexibility and staying low, which is important to playing linebacker. But the competition is the same. It's mano a mano."

FYI, Jordan was at Louisville's junior day yesterday and was more than likely getting the push to reconsider his verbal and play his college football at home. Before anyone panics, he was also at OSU's junior day this afternoon, hanging with his future teammates...so nothing to worry about here.

Jordan is ALL Buckeye, no doubt in my mind. He has dreamed of being a Buckeye forever. No chance he switches. When was the last time we lost a kid because he ust all of a sudden changed his mind? Kevin Bemoll? and that was even more with the news swirling around Clarett.

I'm assuming you mean when was the last time we lost a VERBAL because of that.

Anyway, glad to hear he made it up.

Yes, I meant when was the lest time we lost a public VERBAL commitment because the kid just all of a sudden changed his mind and wanted to go elsewhere.

Whiting said he is still committed to Ohio State and noted that "it's the place I want to go," but said that hasn't stopped other schools from keeping tabs on him.

"Any college that I talk to, I let them know up front that I've made my verbal commitment to Ohio State and a lot of coaches come to me and say that being only a junior they're not going to give up. A of schools tell me I still have some time.

"But I've told them all up front, Ohio State is definitely where I want to go."

Whiting said a number of schools are showing interest, including a lot from Louisville and Kentucky. He said he also has an offer from Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, whose sons played at Trinity when he was in Louisville.

Alabama, Tennessee, USC, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech are other schools showing interest in the Rivals.com No. 49 ranked player in the country.

But even with all of the love other schools are showing Whiting, he's still firm on his commitment to the Buckeyes. He was the first commitment in the Class of '09 for Ohio State, which now has five verbal commitments.

"I have a lot of family there and it's a place where I want to go to get my degree and it's a great school for my major (business and sports management)," Whiting said. "It's the best business school possibly available to me. It's the best fit for me."

On his trip to Columbus this weekend, Whiting said he had a chance to meet and hang out with some of the Buckeyes' top targets for next year. He also watched the Ohio State vs. Michigan wrestling match with fellow '09 linebacker commitment Storm Klein and Ohio State All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis.

"I am getting comfortable being there," he said. "I got a chance to talk to coach (Jim) Tressel and look around some more. I really like it there."

Trinity still has shot at title after state quarterfinals

But Trinity looks to be the only team from the area with a chance at capturing the state title. The Shamrocks had four wrestlers advance to the championship semifinals: Myron Bradbury (103 pounds), Kenny Watkins (140), Brad Hitchings (171) and Jordan Whiting (285).

Whiting, who has committed to play football at Ohio State, will face No. 2 Billy Fuller of Campbell County in a semifinal. Whiting pinned Lafayette's Evan Bullock at the 4:29 mark last night to cap an emotional match.

"He was a little bit excited," Rudolph said. "I think that's the most intense I've seen him all year."
