LB John Simon - (2012 B1G DPOY, Super Bowl Champ)

Ohio State's John Simon is driven to succeed: Bill Livingston
Published: Saturday, November 17, 2012
By Bill Livingston, The Plain Dealer

Madison, Wis. -- Six a.m., and the alarm bell in the head of John Simon, the captain of the Dawn Patrol at Ohio State, was the heavy weights clanging on the bars he lifted in the weight room.

The senior defensive end was always the most motivated, most driven player on the team -- the one least likely to yield to pain, the one never to be denied anything that effort could gain, the one by whom everyone else measured himself.

But Simon wasn't helping anyone but himself if he didn't bring a couple of sluggards along with him, and so that became a rule under coach Urban Meyer. No solitary pain inthose workouts. Let others feel the burn, too. All season, John Simon has been the symbol of the Buckeyes' dedication.

Otherwise, however, Simon always has to be evaluated on the field because he gives so little of himself to anyone outside the Ohio State team.

Ohio State's John Simon (4 sacks) won Big Ten defensive Player of The Week honors today

Well deserved. I have to guess that there was a lot of discussion as to which Buckeye was going to win this award this week.

Gonna miss this one, a lot.

Pretty unfortunate that he won't play a final bowl game (or championship game for that matter). One of the greats.

Bye week really showed up in Johns play Saturday. He clearly needed the rest.

This. I mentioned that in the 2nd half...he has had a great season but he was the dominant force that he can be while healthy on Saturday. I had a feeling he would get this award, although Shazier was right there.

Imo...Simon is a better NFL prospect than Hank....When I watch him I see JJ Watt...Simon is an animal and will be sorely missed...
John Simon is a beast, but he and J.J. Watt are in a different zip code.

Watt goes 6'6 / 295
Johnny goes 6'2 / 260

Simon has the heart and drive, but I think his physical stature is gonna ding him come draft time.

Buckeyes' 'heart and soul'
Work ethic makes senior defensive end John Simon a model player
Updated: November 20, 2012
By Austin Ward | BuckeyeNation

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- His tireless work ethic was well known, leading to jokes that maybe the guy simply lived in the practice facility.

There was never any question about his intensity, a fixture in both grueling workouts and the relentless way quarterbacks were chased down and big plays were consistently delivered.

Then there was the single-minded focus, an approach that seemingly made anything that wasn't helping build a better football player appear to be a major nuisance -- with any requests to stop and talk about his accomplishments, injury concerns or emotions perhaps at the top of that list.

Even in the sanctity of the Ohio State locker room, where those traits helped establish John Simon as the poster boy for leading by example, there were rarely any glimpses at what really made the senior tick. But all at once, after gutting through an injury (of which hardly anybody was aware) to help lead the Buckeyes to a win over California on Sept. 15, the floodgates opened in an emotional, tear-soaked speech that showed a side of the defensive lineman that even longtime teammates had never seen.

"That's just kind of his thing," senior Zach Boren said. "Even around the locker room or even on the field, he doesn't show much personality. He just leads by example and just works so hard, so after the Cal game and when he said what he said, crying and stuff like that, I've never really seen that -- nobody has.

"That struck home so hard for a lot of us. It really opened up our eyes because John never really shows emotion."
