LB John Simon - (2012 B1G DPOY, Super Bowl Champ)

Though I hate the dirty birds, he is a great position to maximize his potential there. Agreed on the Kruger role...it is in his best interest and in Baltimore's to have his hand in the dirt more often than not. Congrats John, all that hard work has paid off. I'll be rooting for you every Sunday to add to the Buckeye fraternity of success at the next level.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Looking for a John Simon comparison before the draft, ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. didn't go far.

?I like the way he plays the game. He's got a lot of versatility. He plays with energy, kind of like the old Mike Vrabel who came out of Ohio State, had a nice career in NFL,? Kiper said. ?Play down end, gives you some scheme versatility. Great kid. Tremendously hard worker, great passion for the game.?

Kiper also thought Simon, the Big Ten's defensive player of the year, would be a third-round pick in this year's draft, as Vrabel was in the 1997 draft when he went No. 91 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead, Simon lasted until today's fourth round, where he was the No. 129 pick overall by the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens.

Now Simon will get a chance to be as productive as three-time Super Bowl champion Vrabel, his position coach on the Ohio State defensive line last year. Fit matters. Vrabel's career took off when he went from Pittsburgh to the New England Patriots. But maybe Vrabel isn't the right standard for Simon.

OSU defensive coordinator Luke Fickell, one of Vrabel's best friends, was asked by The Plain Dealer to evaluate the two.

?He's better than Mike Vrabel,? Fickell said with a smile. ?That guy is tougher, he's faster, he's stronger.?

Smarter?

?Yeah, I'd say smarter,? Fickell said.

Fickell was obviously taking a friendly shot at his old teammate. But he was clear about Simon.

?I would take him on my team as fast as I possibly could,? Fickell said.

Ravens gritty fourth-rounder John Simon draws Jarret Johnson comparison
Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year joins Super Bowl champions in fourth round
By Aaron Wilson The Baltimore Sun
April 28, 2013

Outside linebacker John Simon spent the last few years at Ohio State emulating Mike Vrabel, his position coach who excelled at linebacker for the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs.

Now that Simon has joined the Ravens as a fourth-round draft pick, the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year could draw an entirely new set of comparisons.

With his gritty style, the avid weightlifter may cause fans to reminisce about former Ravens outside linebacker Jarret Johnson. At 6-foot-1, 257 pounds, Simon has played everywhere from defensive end, defensive tackle to linebacker.

"Yes, toughness and style, work ethic, attention to detail, guys that love ball," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of Simon and Johnson, who now plays for the San Diego Chargers. "He's our kind of guy. Jarret Johnson was a Raven, and he always will be. So, it's probably a good comparison."

Last season, Simon recorded 44 tackles, 14.5 for losses and a career-high nine sacks. In four seasons, Simon finished with 154 tackle, 43 for losses, 20.5 sacks and 10 pass deflections.

"I'm a nonstop motor guy who's going to do whatever it takes to be better the team," Simon said. "I do my job. I'm aggressive. My mentality: never quit."

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer often called Simon the heart and soul of the Buckeyes, saying the two-time team captain was his second-favorite player he's ever coached behind Tim Tebow at the University of Florida.

At his campus Pro Day workout, Simon ran the 40-yard dash between 4.62 and 4.7 seconds.

Simon met with the Ravens at the Senior Bowl and they maintained steady interest in him throughout the scouting process.

"They are just a tough, hard-nosed team, and I feel that's how I play the game," Simon said. "I'm just really excited to be part of the organization and look forward to getting to practice."

Simon was sidelined at the Senior Bowl due to a shoulder injury, but indicated he'll be able to fully participate in the Ravens' rookie minicamp next weekend.

"My health is 100 percent," Simon said. "I'm good to go."

Ravens grab Mooney's Simon in 4th round

YOUNGSTOWN

Cardinal Mooney High graduate John Simon has always prided himself on being a blue-collar player from a blue-collar town.

That?s why he thinks he?ll fit right in with this new team, the Baltimore Ravens.

?They are just a tough, hard-nosed team, and I feel that?s how I play the game, and I am just really excited to be part of the organization and look forward to getting to practice,? Simon said on a conference call Saturday. ?I am going to do whatever it takes to do the best I can and to help the team out in any way possible. Whatever that role is, I am going to just embrace it and do everything I can to be the best possible player for the Baltimore Ravens I can be.?

Simon?s work ethic and intangibles are considered off the charts, and he fits the Ravens? defensive mold ? tough and relentless.
?They?re a tough, hard-nosed team, and that?s how I feel I play the game,? said Simon, who grew up in Youngstown as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. ?I?m excited to be a part of the organization, and I look forward to getting to practice.?

Simon required shoulder surgery in February, which affected his pre-draft preparation. He said that?s no longer an issue.

He will be joining a Ravens team that is the defending Super Bowl champion but must replace the two rocks from its defense ? linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed. But Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome has a reputation for finding value in the draft.

?I think that?s the steal of the draft,? Meyer said of Simon. ?I think everybody knows how I feel about that guy.?

John Simon The Next Jarret Johnson?

The Ravens' fourth-round pick is a hard-nosed, versatile defender just like Double-J.

Head Coach John Harbaugh generally doesn?t buy into comparisons.

But even he conceded that fourth-round draft pick John Simon draws some similarities to former longtime Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson.

?Yes, toughness and style,? Harbaugh said. ?I think work ethic, attention to detail, guys that love ball. ? Jarret Johnson was a Raven, and he always will be. So, it?s probably a good comparison.?

The similarities are uncanny.

Johnson was a fourth-round pick of the Ravens back in 2003, and came from a powerhouse program (Alabama). He came to the NFL without a defined position, started playing defensive tackle, and eventually landed at outside linebacker.

Simon, a fourth-round pick, played at undefeated Ohio State and originally played defensive tackle for the Buckeyes. He ended up as a defensive end, but projects more to a linebacker in Baltimore?s scheme.

Johnson was perennially considered one of the Ravens? unsung heroes during his nine seasons in Baltimore. Simon was the Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year, yet lasted until the fourth round.

Johnson became a leader in the Ravens? locker room. Simon was a two-year captain at Ohio State.

Johnson played through pain with regularity, starting a franchise-record 129 games in Baltimore. Buckeyes Head Coach Urban Meyer said he wanted to name his next child after Simon after the senior played through a shoulder injury.

Then there?s the style of play.

Ravens rookie John Simon impressed many with his dedication to weight training
May 03, 2013|By Jeff Zrebiec, The Baltimore Sun

The stories started circulating long before John Simon first set foot on Ohio State's campus and became such a program favorite that his head coach talked about naming his next child after him.

By the time he got to elementary school, Simon was already performing a daily regimen of pull-ups and sit-ups. He lifted 225 pounds 31 times as a 16-year-old. Before he graduated from high school, he had benched 450 pounds and squatted 700.

"People really didn't believe us," said P.J. Fecko, the head football coach at Cardinal Mooney in Youngstown, Ohio. "It spread like wildfire. We'd go play in Cleveland and they'd ask, 'Did he really do that?' It was embarrassing because people would be like, 'Yeah, sure he did.'"

Simon's weight-room feats and maniacal work ethic achieved near mythical status around Youngstown, where he grew up with a weight room in his house, and in Columbus where the defensive end/outside linebacker spent so many hours working out and watching film that the Buckeyes coaching staff had to turn out the lights at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and send him home.

A fourth-round pick by the Ravens last week, Simon reported to the Under Armour Performance Center for the first time for Thursday's unofficial start of rookie minicamp and between meetings and speeches, he carved out some time to get a workout in.

"I just try to go in and work," said Simon, last season's Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year after recording 44 tackles and nine sacks. "It's something I enjoy so I don't want to call it work. It's a stress reliever for me. It's a way to get away, be with teammates, hoot and holler at one another, compete with one another. It's something I really enjoy."

John Simon Brings Freakish, Contagious Work Ethic

Garrett Downing Baltimore
Ravens.com Staff Writer

The fourth-round pick is known as a leader and workout warrior, which is exactly what the Ravens want.

John Simon walked into the Under Armour Performance Center last week for his first day on the job.

He signed some paperwork, took a few photos for the media guide, and set his stuff down at his new locker. Then he wanted to get to work.

?Where?s the weight room?? Simon asked.

True to his reputation as a workout warrior, Simon found his way into an empty Ravens? weight room and got in a lift on his own. Before he?d even met most of his new teammates and coaches, the fourth-round pick out of Ohio State had familiarized himself with the place he?s most comfortable.

?That?s John,? said his college position coach Mike Vrabel. ?He?ll be in there. He?ll open the weight room, and he?ll have a set of keys before the end of the summer. That?s just the type of guy John is. He?ll be the first one in there. That?s what he enjoys.?

The outside linebacker has long been known as a weight-room junkie. Even in high school, he was somewhat of an urban legend after he bench pressed 225 pounds 31 times as a 16 year old.

Simon grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, a hard-working blue-collar town in the heart of the rust belt, and he carries that gritty upbringing with him.

?Like most athletes that come out of Youngstown, he carries his lunch box to work every day,? Vrabel said. ?He?s a tough kid. He?s exactly what the Ravens would want in a player ? toughness, put the team first.?

When Simon got to college, his impact was felt almost immediately.

He earned his way into the defensive rotation as a true freshmen, and then became a full-time starter his sophomore year. Simon?s teammates voted him a captain his junior season and again as a senior, making him just one of seven two-time captains in Ohio State history.

His effort was contagious.

Ravens sign fourth-rounder John Simon to four-year, $2.545 million
By Aaron Wilson The Baltimore Sun
May 21, 2013

The Ravens have signed fourth-round outside linebacker John Simon to a four-year deal.

Simon's contract has a total value of $2.545 million, including a $385,652 signing bonus. The deal includes base salaries of $405,000, $495,000, $585,000 and $675,000.

The Ravens now have three unsigned draft picks: first-round safety Matt Elam, second-round inside linebacker Arthur Brown and third-round defensive tackle Brandon Williams.

Simon is expected to compete for playing time at strongside outside linebacker behind Elvis Dumervil and Courtney Upshaw, and also for a role as a situational pass rusher and on special teams.

The Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year last season, Simon lined up everywhere from defensive end, defensive tackle and linebacker for the Buckeyes.

Because of his gritty style of play, Simon has drawn comparisons to former Ravens outside linebacker Jarret Johnson.

"Yes, toughness and style, work ethic, attention to detail, guys that love ball," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after the draft of Simon and Johnson, who now plays for the San Diego Chargers. "He's our kind of guy. Jarret Johnson was a Raven, and he always will be. So it's probably a good comparison."

Last season, Simon recorded 44 tackles, 14.5 for losses and a career-high nine sacks. In four seasons, Simon finished with 154 tackles, 43 for losses, 20.5 sacks and 10 pass deflections.

At his campus Pro Day workout, Simon ran the 40-yard dash between 4.62 and 4.7 seconds. Simon is an avid weightlifter.

One of the first things he did after arriving at the Ravens' training complex for a rookie minicamp is ask team officials when he could get into the weight room for a workout.
