LB John Simon - (2012 B1G DPOY, Super Bowl Champ)

Third Day Gems: John Simon

NFL_Simon_300.jpg

As much as I value pre-draft evaluations, the prospect?s landing spot is a pivotal part of the process. Few talents can transcend any scheme and impact their team?s success. In fact, plenty of starters and contributors at the NFL level only fill certain roles and might not be considered a long term starter at that position. It is all about figuring out where a player wins and giving them a chance to succeed in that area. In this series I will take a look at prospects selected on the third day that could offer an immediate impact thanks to their strengths and situations. I will never call myself an expert on the coverages and schemes that are included, but I am working hard to learn, so feel free to (politely) point me in the right direction. With that said, I cannot recommend this defensive write-up by Jene Bramel enough.

Other third day gems: LB DeVonte Holloman, RB Zac Stacy, S Earl Wolff, WR Quinton Patton

Despite what Madden has ingrained into your brain, not every 3-4 defense or three/four man front is created equal.

?We are a 3-4 personnel, but a lot of times the front that we play is a 4-3 front,? Ravens Defensive Coordinator Dean Pees said. ?A lot of teams call it over, under, whatever you want to call it, but we really do it out of a 3-4 personnel. So it gives us, hopefully, a little flexibility to jump into a true 3-4 or be able to play 4-3. Either one.?

Ravens rookie LB John Simon gets first sack
Fourth-round draft pick sacks Falcons quarterback Sean Renfree in fourth quarter
By Aaron Wilson The Baltimore Sun
August 16, 2013

Ravens rookie strong-side linebacker John Simon had Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Alec Savoie on the ropes once he got him to turn his body outside with a quick speed rush.

Then, Simon finished Savoie off with a counter move rarely seen by the fourth-round draft pick from Ohio State since the start of training camp.

With an inside spin move, Simon lost Savoie and barreled into the backfield to sack Falcons quarterback Sean Renfree in the fourth quarter to drop him for a 6-yard loss during the Ravens' 27-23 preseason victory Thursday night at M&T Bank Stadium.

"Kind of just an instinctual thing," Simon said. "He beat me on the speed, so I tried to counter inside. Fortunately for myself and the Ravens, the quarterback was still in the pocket."

Simon finished with three tackles and the Ravens' lone sack, his top performance since being drafted by the Ravens and signed to a $2.545 million four-year contract that includes a $385,652 signing bonus.

Simon was limited to one tackle in the Ravens' preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but looked more comfortable against Atlanta in his first home game.

"Yeah, absolutely," Simon said. "It's just getting a feel for how things are and getting a feel for the playbook and we wanted to come back for the veterans as best we could, and we were able to do that. The way it ended was awesome, and it feels great to get the win.

"It's about getting a feel for the playbook and calming your mind down and slowing the game down. I definitely still have a lot of work to do, but it was an improvement."

The 2012 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Simon had 44 tackles, nine sacks and 14.5 tackles for losses last season. In four seasons, Simon finished with 154 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 43 tackles for loss and 10 pass deflections.

Simon is competing for a situational pass rusher role with Adrian Hamilton and Pernell McPhee.

"Yeah, we got a lot of great rushers on the team," Simon said. "I'm trying to contribute any way I can and make improvements."

Simon had a very solid third quarter tonight against the Panthers. He got picked on a bit in the pass coverage. However, when he was able to put his hand down he was unstoppable. Got to the QB multiple times, blew up running lanes and almost got himself a sack - but still forced a 4th down field goal. Playing very intense. If he can continue to work hard, improve his cardio conditioning, and get better with his pass coverage he could be something special in the NFL.

Ravens rookie Q&A: outside linebacker John Simon
September 18, 2013|By Matt Vensel
Each week, Baltimore Sun blogger and reporter Matt Vensel will fire a few questions at a random Ravens rookie. This week it was fourth-round pick John Simon, an outside linebacker and special teams player from Ohio State.

MV: You made your NFL debut against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. You only played on special teams. But how do you think it went?

JS: Yes, sir. It went well. It was exciting to be out there for the first time. Special teams went pretty well that day. We had some nice punt returns and things of those sorts. It was just an exciting time. Hopefully I can build on that game and hopefully get better.

MV: When was the last time that you were a regular on special teams? I’m sure you did it your first couple of years at Ohio State. Did you do it in your final years there as well?

JS: I did play special teams quite a bit at Ohio State, so I had some experience coming in. But we have different schemes and things like that here. I’m just trying to embrace that role and do everything I can to help the team, and I’m going to continue to do that.

MV: There are some pretty talented guys ahead of you on the depth chart in Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil. Do you think it’s kind of a nice blessing that although you might not be able to play right away, you are able to learn from guys like that?

JS: They’ve taught me a lot already. Just watching what they do, they’re truly professionals. Everyone in our meeting room is. Just to learn from the best is truly a blessing for me and I’m just trying to take in everything that they say and make sure that I’m learning and improving every day.

MV: Why did your change your jersey number from 47 to 94?

JS: I don’t think linebackers can be in the 40s, so I didn’t have much of a choice. But I like number 94. I think it looks good.

John (Columbus, Ohio)
Can you give us an update on John Simon's development? How is he being viewed now and into the future.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)

The Ravens are hoping he develops into a core special teams player. He is tied for second with three special teams tackles. Harbaugh likes his toughness, but he didn't win over too many people with that dumb penalty a couple of weeks ago.
