LB John Simon - (2012 B1G DPOY, Super Bowl Champ)

Simon:

Few players in the 2013 NFL draft class play the game with a stronger motor and work ethic than Simon do, but he does not stand out athletically on tape. He will have a chance to change that perception Monday, but the combine is not a favorable setting for Simon?s abilities.

Showing athleticism will be especially important in the eyes of NFL teams that run a 3-4 defense. Measuring in at only 6-foot-1 at the Senior Bowl, he is shorter than the prototypical defensive end, but if he is going to be considered a prospect who can transition to outside linebacker, he is going to have to display lateral athleticism, fluid hips and flexibility in his combine workout.

Health will also come into question at the combine ? Simon missed the final game of his senior season with a swollen bursa sac in his right knee.

Won't be lifting at combine because of the surgery...

John Simon recovers from surgery- CPD interview at the combine 2 23 13

NFL | Combine notebook: Shoulder surgery renders Simon bystander
By Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SUNDAY FEBRUARY 24, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — The shoulder injury that bothered John Simon most of his senior season finally became something he couldn’t endure any longer.
So after having to leave the Senior Bowl last month, the former Ohio State defensive end had surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago. That will prevent him from participating in anything other than team interviews and medical exams this weekend at the NFL combine, but Simon is just relieved to have the shoulder finally repaired.
Simon injured it during the Central Florida game on Sept. 8 and gutted it out the rest of the season, though he had to sit out the Michigan game.
At the Senior Bowl, he was beginning a possible transition to outside linebacker when the shoulder caused him to cut his week short.

“I never got it fixed and thought I could go one more game with it, and that wasn’t the case,” Simon said. “I had to go get it fixed. Fortunately, it was just a clean-out, and I should be back to doing everything in about two to three weeks.”

Ohio State’s pro day is March 8. Simon is hopeful but not necessarily expecting to be ready to do all the drills then.

Simon was the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year and the unquestioned leader on the Buckeyes’ 12-0 team. But there are questions about his best position in the NFL. He is listed as a defensive lineman at the combine.

“I feel like I’m very versatile, and that can help me at the next level,” Simon said. “I feel I can play multiple positions, and that’s something that will work to my advantage in the draft.”

He said that some teams are interested in him as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 system.

Ohio State football?s John Simon networking at NFL Combine

INDIANAPOLIS ? Despite John Simon?s reluctance to promote himself in the run up to the NFL Draft in April, he seems actually quite good at it. The former Ohio State football captain and defensive lineman continued that success during the NFL Scouting Combine this past weekend.

At the Combine, NFL Draft hopefuls participate in interviews with team scouts, coaches, general managers and the media. There is on-field testing and measuring of the players? athleticism, but the interviews provide that additional chance to leave an impression or address outstanding concerns regarding character, decision making, etc.

Simon seems imbued with modesty and a quiet confidence, so it?s not hard to imagine him being at odds with the self-promoting going on all around him at the Combine. During his Saturday media availability at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Ind., Simon laughed at the mention of the self-promotion.

?It?s a different situation (for me),? said Simon, who smiled down at the table on which he was resting his hands. The truth is that Simon has been successfully marketing himself to NFL franchises for weeks. It?s an endeavor that began during the week leading up to the Jan. 26 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Ohio State players finish Pro Day
Thirteen players from Ohio State's undefeated 2012 season worked out for NFL scouts this morning at OSU's Pro Day, and some Buckeyes appeared to have helped themselves.

There are no "official" statistics kept as each team records its own times.

John Simon is rehabbing his shoulder after recent surgery. He said he will will work out for NFL teams March 25 at Ohio State.

On John Simon…

* Simon will hold his own workout for pro scouts on Monday March 25 at 9am. He's still recovering from a shoulder injury.

* Simon said he will do defensive line and linebacker drills at his pro day.

* Simon said he feels comfortable playing LB if that's where a team wants him. Said he played enough drop end at OSU.

John Simon of Ohio State finally gets chance to work out
By Gil Brandt |
Published: March 25th, 2013

Shoulder surgery prevent Ohio State?s John Simon from participating in drills at the NFL Scouting Combine and at the school?s pro day, so the defensive end held an individual workout on Monday.

There were 12 teams present, with Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert the notable attendee.

Simon (6-foot-1, 257 pounds) had a variance in 40-yard dash times, ranging from 4.62 to 4.70 seconds. He had a 34-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-1 broad jump. He ran the short shuttle in 4.42 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.10 seconds. Simon did not lift on the bench press since he did not want to take the chance of re-aggravating his shoulder injury.

Simon?s prospect rating is 70.5, which means he?s a potential starter at best or a role player.

Pains me to think of John Simon moving to LB considering our last great DE's attempt at making the transition. But if anyone is going to make it work, it's this guy. Hardest working guy there is, so I think he will do all he can to become a solid NFL linebacker.

The session, at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, was closed to the media, and to Simon?s agent, Michael Perrett. But Perrett gauged the interest of the scouts as they exited and said there was a discernible buzz for Simon, who has been projected as a second- to fourth-round pick in the April draft.

?People obviously know the type of person and the type of player that he is, but I don?t think the general person understands the phenomenal athlete he is,? Perrett said. ?I think that 4.62 40 really validated it.

?I think John really helped himself and probably opened up a few more eyes.?

I thought Gholston had the best chance with his freakish athleticism. Its going to be a tough tough transition for Simon.
