LB John Simon - (2012 B1G DPOY, Super Bowl Champ)

Catching Up With John Simon
[Print]By Alex - March 11th, 2009

After having the chance to interview Jamie Wood, Carlos Hyde, and Jordan Hall, we get the chance to move back over to the defensive side of the ball, as we sat down with John Simon (or ?All Flannel Tops? as he is affectionately known around here) of Youngstown Cardinal Mooney.

Simon was one of the first to sign onto the Class of 2010 and chose the Bucks over offers from Notre Dame, Illinois, Nebraska, Stanford, and Pittsburgh, among others. John is listed at 6-3/285 and with most of that 285 pounds consisting of pure muscle, he seems to be ready to compete at the college level as a true freshman. The Buckeyes are certainly lucky to be getting this Scout.com 5-star recruit and U.S. Army All-American, as Nader Abdallah, the teams best defensive tackle last season, has graduated, leaving a position in the rotation open. Check out what Simon had to say about the opportunity to play this season, who would win a fight between him and Kelly Pavlik, and what he thinks about Jamie Wood?s opinion of his ?all flannel tops and jeans?.

You committed pretty early in the recruiting process, even though schools like Notre Dame were recruiting you hard. What about Ohio State made you so sure this is where you wanted to play your college football?
Ohio State really stuck out to me because of the family atmosphere. You can tell all the players and the coaches came together to form a team.

What do you plan to major in at Ohio State?
I will major in exercise science. I hope to one day become a strength coach.

BN$--Simon Set To Officially Begin OSU Career On Saturday

John says he has been doing intense speed and agility training 6 days per week and is coming to Columbus faster than ever. He will room with Adam Bellamy.

According to Bellamy, he's not 100% sure that Simon is rooming with him, although he does notice objects in the room have moved, he does not actually ever see Johnny. He only occasionally feels the air move and hears a kind of mosquito noise.

Hoot-N-Holler:

I have been covering OSU football for five years and today was a first for me. Whether it was a mistake by the coaching staff, or a gift from above, we were able to witness the infamous Hoot-N-Holler drill live and in person.

It was as physical (and loud) as advertised, which wasn't surprising, but I was a little shocked that offense seemed to dominate the drill. That almost never happens in practice when the linemen are involved, but that was clearly the case today as the defense did not get a stop until the fifth go-around.

In their defense, there were only three players going on defense today, and according to Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, there is was a fourth defender (a safety) in the video on Youtube. Boom Herron had a few nice runs with Brewster and Cordle blocking for him and Brandon Saine broke some nice tackles, but the score of the day belonged to Jordan Hall. The freshman juked two defenders out of their shoes with a silky-smooth spin move before waltzing into the end zone.

The defense did start to pick things up towards the end of the drill and it all started with John Simon. The freshman defensive tackle was too much for any of the offensive linemen to handle. This is a big kid who takes up space and he did a good job of beating his man to stuff a handful of runs.

I really hope this is a portend of things to come: having a brute in the middle of the line would be a real luxury.

Looks like Simon will be in Heavy rotation against the running power of USC. he cracked the depth chart behind Dellinger and Larimore. Im expecting good things from simon this year helping him to grow as a player over future time.
