Remind anyone of something similar around this time, last year?
Mike Adams. You'd think they would have learned the first time around that maybe these Ohio high school football fans know a thing or two about the players that they root for.

No way John's the #3 overall player in the nation, but he'll prove here on a national stage that he's a higher caliber recruit than those recruiting services have been billing him as.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - All-American Bowl: East Hot 11 (free)

DT John Simon
6-3/274, Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney

Simon has been known to be a weight room specimen that has great strength but at times doesn't have the production to match. On Monday that wasn't the case. Simon showed good techinique, a high motor and great leverage on the defensive line. He is tough to move due to his strength, but he also has good quickness and managed to get penetration on several occasions against the East offensive line. Most importantly, Simon plays low and gets underneath offensive linemen to cause a lot of disruption.

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Notebook: Brown impresses in scrimmage (free)

Simon is a physical presence

Ohio State defensive tackle commit John Simon has that look. You know you don't want to mess with him. His muscles bulge, his neck is thick and he said weight lifting is a good way to relieve stress.

Simon doesn't seem to mess around much ? and he's taken that aggression out in practice this week. His max on the bench press is 445 pounds and he once did 48 reps of 225 pounds.

"I enjoy lifting a lot," said Simon, rated as the seventh-best prospect in the Ohio top 80 of 2009. "It's one of my hobbies. It's not everything but it helps a lot. You need the whole package. You need speed, flexibility, smarts, everything put together and you always have to have heart also."

After a relatively light week of contact so far, the East team stepped up and really popped the pads at Wednesday's scrimmage. It even got so physical that offensive lineman Eric Shrive and defensive tackle John Simon ended up shoving and pushing each other to the ground where they wrestled for about 20 seconds.

The defensive tackles played well at practice and many made nice plays but Simon, an Ohio State pledge, had the best stop when he broke free, charged through the line and stopped Bryce Brown in his path. Simon has been productive all week and although he's not the highest-rated tackle on the team he has staked his claim as one of the more consistent ones.

Mooney?s Simon helps East win

Published:Sunday, January 4, 2009

By Joe Scalzo

Cardinal Mooney senior John Simon is used to playing against some of Ohio?s best players during the football season, something that prepared him for Saturday?s U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

?Going against guys like that [this week] in practice, you have to come ready to go,? he said on Saturday night following East?s 30-17 victory. ?I thought I did pretty well.?

Simon, an Ohio State recruit at defensive tackle, had two tackles for a loss for the East squad, playing the whole game as part of a defensive line rotation.

?It was a lot of fun,? Simon said. ?I had a really good time.?

Simon arrived in San Antonio six days before the game and was set to return to Youngstown today at 2 p.m. The Texas weather was in the mid-70s for much of the week.

?It was hot by Ohio standards,? Simon said. ?Some of the other kids from the South were running around thinking it was cold. It was kind of funny.?

When asked to name the highlight of his week, Simon didn?t mention the game or the weather.

?Just spending time with the soldiers,? he said. ?It helps you realize what they do for this country and what a great honor it is to live in America.?
