LB John Kerr (official thread)

LordJeffBuck said:
The poster on Bucknuts (Ytown11) is a credible source (even though he is not a frequent poster). I saw this info days ago, and didn't post it because, quite frankly, who cares? Kerr is a walk-on, back-up LB, and if he leaves..... In any event, it is good to hear that Freeman is doing so well, and of course the big 3 LB's should all vie for All Big Ten (or better) this season.
:roll1:
That's a bit harsh. Kerr could have had a paid ride at just about any non B10 school. Yet he chose to pay his own way at OSU. To call him a mere walk-on, back up that nobody cares about is just wrong. No offense, but you've been turning into a real stuck-up piece of work lately.

So, everyone who for some reason keeps clinging to that notion, let it go already

Sorry Mil, I guess it's just wishful thinking. MDA is not a natural LB, he is a physical specimen who fits the mold at LB. Honestly, we should never compare him to the big Kat because Katzenmoyer was a natural LB, MDA is not. Like Pagac used to be, MDA plays too stiff and has a very difficult time fighting off blocks. I saw Mike play in high school, and never understood why he was rated so high, I guess mostly on potential looking back at it all. He is most effective when he is used in blitzing packages, so why not line him up on the corner and cut him loose, then drop him back in zone blitz coverages(ala Mike Vrabel for the Pats) ? How often is he used in man coverage? He just seems a little too stiff to cover RB's with 4.3 speed. Don't get me wrong, he is fast as hell, but he lacks football agility.

I'm sure that some disagree with me. Along with you all I am pulling for Mike to have a breakout season, I just do not see him ever living up to his hype if he is kept at LB.

I will be the first one to eat my words if Mike kicks ass this season, trust me.

While I appreciate the support and recognize the need to weed out the worst of the BN morons, I think I jumped the gun on this one. BuckStocks came out hard, but I should've given him the same benefit of the doubt I would give anybody else. I'm taking him at his word that he wasn't trying to be an asshole and I don't really have any cause to believe otherwise.

daddy: I have no problem with players being shifted around, but when the staff has emphatically said on more than one occasion that a player will not move, then regardless of how good that move may otherwise seem, we should not keep hoping for it. I for one think he'll come into his own this year at MLB and push Schlegel hard for the starting job, if not take it.

Hey, mate, all I can tell you is that it ain't me and I gave you a + hit back for all of the points it would let me. That's only fair since I got a couple of + dings for teeing off first. Go back and look at the Louis Martinez posts, if you haven't already seen them. I think a lot of our guys are a little trigger happy after dealing with that moron.RB

Looks like the board has corrected itself BuckStockHere. I think your rep totals are at least where they were before this whole thread started, if not higher.

FWIW, I heard a pretty respectable judge of linebacker talent speak very highly MDA recently. Some guy named Spielman does a top 5 list during the noon hour in C-Bus. About a week ago Chris did a list on his top 5 linebackers in the BigTen. Coming in at number 5 ... MDA. Spiels says the guy is looking awesome in practice and will see the field quite a bit this year. Now this is all still speculation, but when Spielman is that excited about a player who didn't even start last year, I tend to get jacked up myself. Kerr, or no Kerr, I think our LB corps is going to be stellar this season.

You know, I didn't actually catch the rest of his list exhawg. I was going to a meeting and had to turn off the radio. Hummm, maybe I'll see if it's listed at 1460thefan. I was a bit stunned when I heard him say MDA. Even "Red Dawg" Kaelin questioned the pick of MDA, and Spiels was quick to back up the pick, saying even though MDA hadn't played much last season he thought MDA would have a breakout season based on seeing him practice.

Good point though ... maybe Chris picked all OSU guys.

EDIT: Here's the list exhawg.

Yep. I'm glad, even though there seems to be a few, this place doesn't have a lot of dopes. No place is perfect. I'm no angel, but I try to but civil at worst.

I heard someone else mention that Spiels thing. I think he has our proverbial rose colored glasses on. There is no way that a player who hasn't hardly played, much less started, could be the 5th best LB in the big 10. no way. That does a disservice to the other programs players. I couldn't sit here and rattle off 10 LB's who are better - only because I don't know specific names. I just know he is NOT one of the top 5. You could make a good argument that he is not even one of the top 3 LB's here. e.g. hawk, carpenter, shlegel(sp?). thoughts ?

and still, I hope he proves me wrong and dominates the next two years.

See my previous post BuckStocks ... I added Spiels picks.

I too was a bit stunned to hear MDA as the 5th best BigTen LB ... but that's what Spielman said. Will he be that good or not? Time will tell, but Spielman wasn't kidding with the pick.

If he is saying he WILL BE the 5th best LB, well at least you can give him a pass on that, even though I doubt it. If he is saying he IS the 5th best LB - that is just untrue. He doesn't have any stats to back that up or performance to justify it. Basing a remark like that on spring practice and "how he looks" seems a bit short sighted to me.

Nitpicking maybe. I have a feeling he is saying that he IS though.
I hope he turns into the #1 LB and fulfills his prophecy!!!!!! Remember, he was supposed to be the greatest LB to walk through the halls. Remember that video that was out on him doing crazy stuff in a gym, i.e. jumping, running and what not?

Not to tread too heavily into analogies to players from other teams again, BUT: MDA's story reminds me a lot of Kendra at Florida State a few years ago. He had an enormous reputation as an athlete coming in and then bounced around different positions, had some injuries and eventually washed out. My point all day, and I think we all share it, is that we don't want that to happen to MDA. That's why I said I'd like to see him at a spot where he had the maximum opportunity to prove his stuff. Cie Grant was also in a similar position and JT got it more or less sorted for him at the end and he's got a pro shot. MDA has comparable, if not better, ability and we ought to put him where we and he benefit most. Finally, obviously an enormous gulf of difference here, but bear with me, I decided to change rugby clubs after three years because I needed to move to a position that better suited me and I couldn't get any playing time at that spot with my old club (no real football analog, but kind of like moving from split end to tailback or from corner to Sam linebacker). I didn't really want to leave, but it's worked out tremendously. I'd like to see something like that for MDA before his time is up for us.
