LB/DE Mark Johnson (official thread)

The discussion was whether or not to let a kid visit even with bad grades... that's an exception I think we would make with glenville (vs. offering before grades, which we did not do).

Don't start with me, boy! I'll have your water shut off there before you know it. :wink2:

I know you guys were talking about visits, but I still think it applies. Having a kid who is changing for the good is a much better risk than one who is changing for the worse, like wearing michigan clothes.

like freddie lenix?

is osu after any other MLB's? I dont think a kid being recruited to play OLB would worry much about a school recruiting a MLB. That's like a CB worring about a school recruiting a safety, or a guard worrying about a kid being recruited to play tackle.

Homan could possibly go inside but we are right behind VTECH for Navarro Bowman who is pretty darn tough.

Lenix's scores weren't that low, and he made it past the clearinghouse. Although he scored a 15 on the ACT, he had a 3.4 gradepoint average.

I hate to tell you, but 15 on the ACT is pretty darn low. The 3.4 GPA is misleading, as Clevelands Inner City Schools are near the bottom of many categories nation-wide. Hence the ACT/SAT, which is a consistent measure across schools/states/etc. There was a very long thread about this a while back in regards to the fact that the Cleveland school systems do nothing to prepare their students for the next level. WIth that said, it is admirable of Freddie Lenix to be putting the effort into Community College to get into tOSU.

Also, regarding allowing students to visit, I believe tOSU is more flexible with in state students who do not have to travel far to get to the game. It looks to me that the bigger issue is confirming that OOS students are close to making the grade before tOSU will fund an official visit.

From the Cal site...an update on all the Dorsey and McClymond recruits, who play each other tonight. This is a big game this weekend and will feature such highly touted recruits as Mark Johnson, Stafon Johnson, Keith Browner, Joshua Tatum, Derrick Hill and NaDerris Ward.

I'm really hoping that Mark can get his academic situation together and get his visit in here. I honestly think with all the praise we have got from him without even receiving a visit from him that we would have a verbal commitment from him if he was in for the Texas or Iowa game. Hopefully we get him in here really soon I think this is probably the best LB we are after as of now. Besides him I don't think we are after any other MLB's other than Bowman who is looking more and more like a longshot.

two things about the article stuck out to me.

first, osu is the only school in which he wants to visit in-season.

second, it doesnt appear that many other schools are making a strong push for him.

just judging by his updates, if osu would really turn up the heat with him, they would be in the driver's seat.

grades?

i think it has to be academics over talent. however, bill kurelic stated that johnson specifically told him the only reason that he didnt visit for iowa was the fact that his dad was sick and couldnt go, but the visit was set. i dont know how true that is.

LOS ANGELES (September 30, 2005) --- Recognized as two of the top football players in the nation, Stafon Johnson and Mark Johnson of Los Angeles have been named 2006 U.S. Army All-Americans. Both will join a stand-out list of athletes playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday, January 7, 2006 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

The classic East vs. West match-up will be televised live on NBC January 7th at 12:00 p.m. (CST) and will feature the top 78 prep football student-athletes in the country.
Stafon Johnson is the #3 ranked running back and Mark Johnson is the #11 ranked linebacker in the country.

"Stafon is a true game-breaking running back, with a strong work ethic. He has the ability to make the big plays as well as do the little things and his vision is excellent. Mark, on the other hand, physically has the quickness and the strength to play both inside or outside. He shows great agility, foot quickness and athleticism," according to Scout.com.

"It is a great pleasure to have these fine young men selected to represent their school and community as U.S. Army All-Americans," said Colonel Thomas Nickerson, Director of Strategic Outreach for the U.S. Army Accessions Command. "They have proven themselves to be superior athletes who, like our Soldiers, take pride in making a difference and turning in outstanding performances.

"Our slogan, 'An Army of One,' recognizes the strength of the individual in achieving team goals. Stafon and Mark demonstrate how football, like the Army, makes you a stronger person not just for today, but into the future. A national audience will see this when they take the field in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl," said Col. Nickerson.

Stafon is a standout running back and free safety while Mark is a standout linebacker. Both play at Dorsey High School and were two of 400 players nominated nationally and two of 78 selected to participate in the Bowl by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee.
