Cause for a pause: Former Lions linebacker speaks up about former team, rivalry

Angelique S. Chengelis / The Detroit News

Chris Spielman is known in these parts as a former Ohio State linebacker drafted in 1988 by the Lions and for which he played until 1995. Spielman now works as a college football analyst for ESPN. He will work today's Michigan-Michigan State television broadcast. He took a few minutes to answer some questions:
Q. You're an Ohio State guy, so is it strange calling games at Michigan Stadium?
A. No. I do like being up here, because it's a great venue for football. Remember, Michigan was my second choice for school.

Here's a guy who can relate to the players and possess great leadership abilities. It seems like we need someone who can bridge the discord between the staff and the players at this point. I'm for getting Spiels a position, any position, on the staff.

Totally agree - would be great to have him on the staff. He understands the tradition at tOSU and would definitely know how to get the team emotionally prepared.

you listen to him in the booth and he sounds like a natural born coach. i'm surprised he hasn't dipped his toe into the coaching scene. is there any reason why he hasn't? at OSU or anywhere for that matter.

Pure speculation, but Chris is a big time family man, and also takes an active role in his wife's activities. Given his intensity and passion, I wonder if he'd be able to juggle family and coaching. Just a thought.

I understand that completely, but didn't he interview for the HC position when Cooper was let go?

Herbstreit says U-M is 'sorry' it has to play Ohio State

So, what's being said in Columbus about Saturday's annual rivalry game between No. 10 Ohio State (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten) and Michigan (3-8, 2-5)?
Here are excerpts of the conversation that took place Monday on WBNS 1460 AM's "The Big Show," hosted by Bruce Hooley. He was joined by former Ohio State players Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Spielman, now both analysts for ESPN.
Spielman: "Anybody that played in that game understands what that game is and how special it is. For Michigan, I think it's vital for them because they have absolutely nothing. I admit when I'm wrong -- I was wrong about Michigan winning four games. I think they're going to win three."....

Spielman: "What do you want us to do, give 'em some of our players to make it fair?" :slappy:

He did coach. He was the head coach of the Columbus Destroyers in 2005. He lead them to a lowly 2-14. The rumor I remember was that the front office wanted him to fire his coaches, but instead he walked away from coaching.
