LB C.J. Hicks (Official Thread)

Just reading the 11 Warriors article on how awesome our D will be next year (and it will) and they had our two LBs as Styles and Simon.

I have been anxious to see Hicks step up since he comitted. He had 71 snaps this season. Playing behind Eichenberg and Chambers, Styles had 464, Simon 300.

He has been in every game, although mostly on special teams, so it doesn't sound like an injury. Certainly falls short of the break out year I was hoping to see (and that Styles clearly had).

Echo that Oh8ch. Capturing the two 5*s in Ohio was a coup. Sonny did well, and broke out, but CJ Hicks didn't, as use of LB was reduced by a third, and the room was pretty full. What with graduation, transfers, and running out of eligibility the room has thinned out. If we get the Bama S, might push Sonny down to LB, and maybe Hicks vamooses? Hope not, but need him doing more than kick-off teams.

they need to put him at rush DE ala Baron Browning
Problem is, he's a liability in the run game. He can't diagnose the run scheme, and the RB goes by him, or he gets swept in the blockers or his own teammates. And the minute he hits the field, the OC would know that he's blitzing. Also, do you limit Mitchell Melton in favor of CJ?
I'm rooting for him, but its hard to correct those issues mid-season

Honestly you can see why the kid was rated so high, I meant to post about it (after the Akron game) but he looked great in terms of diagnosing and finding the ball. The problem was the point of attack, couldn't finish tackles despite putting himself in good position. I, admittedly, wasn't quite as vested in the second half of the WMU game (thanks lady) so I can't quite comment on this past weekend.

That being said, Reese absolutely deserves to be our 3rd LB.

  • On whether the team has considered playing C.J. Hicks along the line of scrimmage: "We have. But we need C.J. right now to play at linebacker. ... We need to find a consistency there that we believe that he can do at linebacker. ... He has to improve. He's gotta continue to grow. We've seen him do it, we know he can do it, but the consistency's just gotta improve."
  • On whether Hicks could play on the line of scrimmage: "We haven't discussed that because C.J. is still developing very well and he's still considered very much a part of that mix at linebacker. ... But it's always been in the back of my mind ... I know it may come into play at some point. ... You'd have to experience some depth issues in certain places. We're so talented on the edge right now and our depth is so good."
