LB C.J. Hicks (Official Thread)

He would be electric in a "Jack" position in a 4-3 or able to move around the lines in a 4-2-5. I don't love him with his hand in the dirt at that size currently but he would be electric just turned loose to roam the Defense and raise hell but in attacking not so much read and react like a Mike.

Did Anyone See the Interaction with Austin Ward and CJ Hicks?

I know that some on here do not long Austin Ward. I'm not a huge fan, but occasionally I watch some of his videos with Birm and Landis. There was a video, but it appears Ward edited that exchange out.
After the Purdue game, Austin was trying to speak with CJ Hicks and Hicks answered a question kinda half-assed, and then Austin asked him a second question and CJ brushed him off.
I don't know if they have some history or what, but the way CJ handled the conversation seemed like a dick move.
In comparison JJ stopped and answered Ward's questions even. Stark contrast on how JJ gave the media some time vs CJ.

This soured me a little bit with Hicks.

Well they did that CJ and you missed what would’ve been a sack.

All the talent in the world but just doesn’t finish plays.

I don’t think it’s indicative of his personality but yeah he’s probably frustrated with his lack of playing time. With how he performs though what can the coaches do? Hopefully he figures something out because otherwise I can see him transferring to a school like Penn State or Indiana etc

Even being a Dayton native and huge fan of Hicks heading into the season, I can't defend his play. He gets lost in traffic, takes horrible angles, and overpursues when he rushes. Might be time to get Powers in more.

Mostly I'm confused because you have a kid that is crazy athletic, physical and very smart. I don't know why it's not clicking.

Reminds me of Booker the kid from SVSM. Super athletic but just struggled as a starting LB.

Hicks is probably right that he needs to rush off the edge. If that’s the case he should’ve gone to the coaches to push for the move. He can’t play defensive end at like 235-240.

That should’ve been pushed in the off season so he could get up to the 250-255 area. Also, everyone on defense loves to rush the passer with no other responsibilities. Not exactly cool to be like “ok sure you can just rush the passer and have all the chances”.

My point being I’m sure they’re hesitant to reward someone that hasn’t shown the consistency in practice.

Nah, even when you're just on a straight pass rush you have responsibilities.

One of the biggest breakdowns this year has been staying in their rush lanes.
