LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

Tell me what Parcells has won without Belichick as his defensive cordinator? Now he doesn't even have a choice on which guys he gets on offense (Owens). Parcells will never win anything else. He is a hard ass whom the game has passed. Anyone who bothered to watch Carp play can see he is not a middle linebacker.

Ellis tears left Achilles' tendon

By MAC ENGEL

After tearing his left Achilles' tendon, linebacker Greg Ellis was determined to walk off the field, even if he needed crutches.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Just in case.
That was the only reason Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis returned to the field. He already had been carted off in the third quarter with an injury. He wanted to be able to walk off.
And after the Cowboys wrapped up their 27-10 win against the Arizona Cardinals, there was Ellis in sweat pants and a hat, "walking" off the field. On crutches.
He did it just in case. Because after tearing his left Achilles' tendon in the third quarter Sunday, his season is over. And, maybe, his career.
"I wanted to walk off initially because you deal with the reality of stuff, and I don't plan for it to be my last game," said Ellis, 31. "But, in case it is, I can say I went back out there and walked off without somebody carting me off. That's important to me."
After Ellis' successful switch from end to linebacker during training camp, losing him could be devastating to the Cowboys' defense.
When Ellis suffered the injury as Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart threw an incomplete pass with 2:33 remaining in the third quarter, he thought nothing of it.
"I thought someone kicked me," he said. "That's what it felt like."It was only after he was carted to the locker room he learned the news.
"It's part of life," he said. "I'm a realist. I realize there is a possibility that could have been it. I'm going to work and pray and pray and pray it's not. Reality is that it could've been."
The other reality is that he had been the team's defensive MVP this season. He was what Cowboys coach Bill Parcells calls a "pressure" player.
Other than linebacker DeMarcus Ware, the Cowboys don't have another consistent "pressure" player on their defense.
"We're going to miss him a lot," Ware said.
Entering Sunday's game, Ellis led the team with 4 1/2 sacks, was tied for the team lead with three tackles for losses, had a pair of quarterback pressures, an interception, three passes defended and three forced fumbles. He had a pair of pressures Sunday.
"He has been the staple that we've had on defense," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said. "You have somebody that's quality that he is, and then have his season end like this, [the disappointment] is more for him. Our team will suffer because of not having him."
Ellis's misfortune will be Bobby Carpenter's gain.
The team's first-round draft pick from Ohio State filled in for Ellis on Sunday, and when asked if it was time for Carpenter to "pick it up," Jones was quick to answer, "Yes sir."
Thus far, Carpenter has been inactive in three games, and played a limited role on defense and special teams.
"I feel more comfortable making plays," Carpenter said. "It's a difficult transition. It's something I didn't start as well as I'd like, and hopefully I can now. If I have the opportunity to play, hopefully it's the way [Ellis] wanted to."

Ellis out for season with Achilles tear

By Jaime Aron (The Associated Press)

IRVING - With Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis out for the rest of the season after he tore his left Achilles' tendon in a 27-10 victory over Arizona, Dallas rookie Bobby Carpenter probably faces the biggest challenge.

Ellis is expected to have surgery Tuesday.

All season, Dallas has been able to live with top pick Carpenter being merely a bit player because of how well Ellis handled his conversion to linebacker. While Carpenter won't automatically get the job, this is his chance to prove the Cowboys knew what they were doing when they made him the 18th pick in the draft.

"Would I like him to [take over]? Well, yeah," coach Bill Parcells said Monday. "But what I need now is the most efficient operation we can get."

"It's a great opportunity for Bobby Carpenter," owner Jerry Jones said in the locker room Sunday. "And he senses that."

Carpenter starred as an outside linebacker at Ohio State, and Dallas drafted him to play opposite last year's top pick, DeMarcus Ware. Parcells also liked the kid's bloodline: his father, Rob, played fullback for Parcells on the New York Giants in the 1980s.

Before Carpenter could learn the playbook, Parcells moved Ellis from defensive end to linebacker. Ellis bristled at first, fearing he'd be cut if it didn't work out. He asked to be traded and grumbled about wanting to be anywhere but training camp when he reported.

Yet he proved to be a quick study and was probably the team's best defensive player through the first eight games. He went into the Arizona game leading the team in sacks (four and a half), tied for the lead in tackles for losses (three), forced three fumbles, broke up three passes and had an interception. This will be only the second time since 1999 that he hasn't led the team in sacks.

Adding to the challenge: Dallas has to break in its new alignment Sunday against the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts.

Parcells said how the Cowboys decide to attack Peyton Manning and the rest of the Colts' offense will be a factor in filling Ellis' roles.

"We're thinking over the possibilities that maybe Junior or maybe Al could do something on the early downs and Bobby could do something on the nickel or vice versa," Parcells said.

I fully expect Bobby Carpenter to have a solid career... he has all the tools.. played against the best competition in the land... and excelled... He'll do fine at this tier... after he gets rid of the fear of looking over his shoulder at the coaches..

And I also expect he's there for the long haul because an achilles tear is worrisome... look how often it reoccurs...

Unproven Carpenter gets his first shot starting at linebacker Outside chance

IRVING -- On Monday, Cowboys coach Bill Parcells didn't even want to talk about the thought of facing quarterback Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts' offense Sunday without linebacker Greg Ellis, arguably the team's best pass rusher
Two days later, Parcells acknowledged he has a couple of contingency plans in mind, but still no firm answers.
Veteran Al Singleton and little-used rookie Bobby Carpenter are the leading candidates to replace Ellis in the regular defense, with the Cowboys considering Junior Glymph and end Jason Hatcher in his place in passing situations. Linebacker Kevin Burnett is another option in what is expected to be a committee approach to replacing Ellis, who had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn left Achilles' tendon suffered Sunday against Arizona.
"It's not really what I want to do, but sometimes you don't have a choice," Parcells said.
Really?
Flashing back to last April's NFL Draft, the Cowboys did have a choice -- Carpenter. They took him with the 18th overall pick with the express intention of his playing the right outside linebacker spot that Ellis now has vacated.
"I like the player as an athlete. He is a pure linebacker. You could see him do everything you wanted him to see," Parcells said of Carpenter at the time.
But Carpenter's stat line with the Cowboys to date reads: inactive for three of the first five games, no tackles on defense, and only two tackles on special teams.
According to team owner Jerry Jones, there are $7.5 million reasons -- guaranteed money included in Carpenter's $12.5 million contract -- why the Cowboys shouldn't be facing this conundrum.
Jones says it's time for Carpenter to step up and give the team a return on its investment.
The former Ohio State star acknowledges there is pressure on him to make the most of this opportunity.
"I'm not trying to make this the be-all and end-all by any means," Carpenter said. "But it's my first big opportunity to showcase what I can do. Obviously, I want to be out there playing every down and make this a permanent situation. Hopefully, I can make the most of it."
Although Singleton might be the safer choice, the Cowboys admit they would like Carpenter to take control of the position.
Optimism aside, the Cowboys are going to do what's best for the Cowboys, while readily acknowledging that Carpenter remains more of a question mark than a solid answer at this point.
Blame for Carpenter's minimal impact includes Ellis being moved from end to outside linebacker in training camp and Carpenter's subsequent move to an unfamiliar inside linebacker position. He's also been criticized for a lack of aggression.
Carpenter (6-foot-2, 257 pounds) thought he was ready for the NFL and the Cowboys because his dad, Rob, played for Parcells with the New York Giants and tried to prepare him as best as possible. He says it's been a tougher transition than he expected.
"You get down by not playing," Carpenter said. "Early on, it was tough. Being inactive, active and inactive. The coaches were hard on me. They wanted to see production, and I wanted see that out of myself. It was no fun sitting the bench. That's disappointing to me."
Carpenter said he has been able to remain positive because of twice-weekly talks with his dad about his own experiences in the NFL and the understanding that players develop at different paces.
Carpenter and the Cowboys are encouraged by the improvement he's shown recently on special teams and believe he might be ready to contribute on the regular defense. His special-teams tackles have come in the past two games against Washington and Arizona.
And to those who already have labeled him a draft bust, Carpenter said, "This thing is a long way from being over. I have had a difficult road, but I am reaching some dividends here. I hope to prove to everyone I can play."
Replacing GREG ELLIS
Although the Cowboys would like Bobby
Carpenter to step up and take control of the position left open by the season-ending injury to veteran outside linebacker Greg Ellis, they will likely use the committee approach to replace Ellis. They'll use different players on the regular defense and others in obvious pass situations.
The candidates:
Bobby Carpenter:
This is the rookie's opportunity to prove his worth as a first-round draft pick. Will he make the most of it?
Al Singleton: He is steady and dependable, which is one reason the Cowboys kept the savvy veteran on the roster.
Kevin Burnett: He
is the next best linebacker, but coach Bill
Parcells likes his current role as a nickel linebacker and special-teams demon.
Junior Glymph: The little-used third-year player is the best rusher of the linebackers and could get snaps in the nickel defense in place of Ellis.
Jason Hatcher: The rookie likely will take Ellis' outside rush role opposite DeMarcus Ware when the Cowboys go to a four-man line.
