LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

I think you nailed it Sniper. Cowboys saw a hybrid DE/OLD and thought he'd be the perfect OLB in their scheme but unfortunately it hasn't worked out. I thought Dallas would be a good fit for him so I'm pretty surprised, but he was just too good at tOSU to not have any value outside of special teams in the NFL.

I think a 4-3 scheme will do him well, and he will become a solid player somewhere. I sure know the Benglas could use an OLB.

He could be a good SAM in a 4-3. 3-4 OLB's tend to be great pass rushers. Carpenter was good but I never thought HOLY SHIT when I watched him. For example, I think HOLY SHIT when I think of Gholston in a 3-4 OLB spot, but he obviously couldn't be a 4-3 OLB.

Anywhoo, for Carpenter to reach his potential, he needs to go to a 4-3 team, and his compadre, Spears, should do the same and play as a UT in the 4-3.

I don't follow the Cowboys extremely closely, but I've always liked Spears. I don't know if they;re planning in letting him go or moving him, but every game I've watched he's had an impact in. Seems very athletic and fast. Maybe I haven't watched enough.

I know for a fact the Browns need an OLB either through FA or the draft. Anybody with 2 working legs and a pulse has to be faster than Willie McGinest at this point. Even though Bobby should be in a 4-3, I think a lot of people would be happy to see him in a Borwns uni.

I kind of follow the Cowboys seeing as how I'm an Eagles fan. I tend to stay up to date with my rival teams. He's a terrible fit as 3-4 End, but I think he would be a very good 4-3 UT. He reminds me of Dorsey.

I know Browns fans want to see an OSU player, but I don't think moving from a 3-4 to a 3-4 would do much for Carpenter. With your lack of a first round pick, I could see maybe ***breathe*** Michigan's Shawn Crable who would be an excellent rush backer, or maybe Auburn's Quentin Groves, Georgia Tech's Phil Wheeler or Maryland's Erin Henderson. Florida's Derrick Harvey is another possibility.

Either way, Carpenter must be moved to a 4-3 to amount to anything besides the bust he currently is. Lots of potential, but stuck behind some good LBs in Dallas in a scheme that doesn't match his strengths.

I agree Bobby is better suited in a 4-3. All I was saying is that he'd be an immediate improvement from Willie McGinest. It actually says a lot for the depth of Dallas that Bobby Carpenter is this expendible.

I follow the ACC a decent amount being an FSU grad, and I think Erin Henderson belongs in a 4-3. Regarding Crable, it fits the Browns style to take a Michigan man. It just seems to be Clevelands' MO. I'm not completely sold on Shawn(lots of missed tackles) but if he's there in round 2 for Cleveland I wouldn't hate the pick. I think Derrick Harvey is a pipe dream for us in round 2. If he were there, I think he'd be a no brainer. He fits the Kamerion Wimbley mold in size and style when comparing their play in college. I don't know enough about Groves or Wheeler truthfully.

I do know Bobby will find a home and most likely succeed because that is the type of guy he is. He really is very talented, and has made a name for himself in special teams if nothing else. It will deinately be an entertaining off-season as teams look for fits in their system.

There are only a handful of QB's I think I would trade Romo out for... one is in the superbowl, one was in it last year....other than that....not seeing it.

By the way - I think Dallas had more former Buckeyes than most teams(at least at one point not long ago).

still - carp is way overrated. When your 1st round pick can only shine on special teams - it is a bust no matter how you slice it.

I'd be shocked if they get anything better than a 5th rounder for him...and I'd trade him immediately if so.

Unfortunately - I think Terry Glenn's career might well be over with knee surgery.

No actually Dallas doesn't really have a tradition of having Buckeyes. I know the Boys have a great tradition in the NFL but they are not really a hot bed for Ohio State players.

How about the 2 year period in which they had Terry Glenn, Joey Galloway, Derek Ross, Tyson Walter, Michael Wiley, Ken Yon Rambo, and Eddie George?

I'd say that's pretty solid.

I was just looking at the Universities web site and their overall record isn't that great. Again, just my opinion.

Bobby Carpenter ? I admit it, when we drafted Bobby Carpenter I thought he would be a player for us. So far, that hasn?t happened. In his rookie campaign, the Cowboys probably made a mistake by teaching him two positions, inside and outside linebacker, and he never really became comfortable. Eventually, Parcells put him on the outside and he got some playing time late in 2006 when Greg Ellis went down with injury. I watched him closely in film reviews during those games and I came away with the thought that he just wasn?t strong enough yet and had poor technique in shedding blockers. His instincts seemed OK, he was usually in position but he just couldn?t shed the blockers and would get pushed back trying to hold the point of attack, even by tight ends. Down the stretch he did have a couple of good games capped by a stellar effort in the Seattle playoff game.

Coming into camp in 2007 my thought was that a full offseason training regimen at Valley Ranch would give him the strength needed to really become a player. I watched him closely at training camp and came away a little disappointed because he wasn?t making plays that stood out. Wade Phillips stated that he gave him an opportunity to show what he could do in a preseason game and that Carpenter failed miserably earning him a permanent spot on the bench. This was as close as I ever heard Phillips criticize a player by name. The most we saw of Carpenter in 2007 was on special teams where he did a decent job and he was also slowed by a quad injury that stayed with him most of the year. That brings us to 2008, a critical year for Carpenter in terms of his future with the Cowboys. There have already been rumblings that the Cowboys are seeking to trade him and if they can get something decent in return then I wouldn?t have a problem with that. If they aren?t going to use him they might as well get something for him. If he stays with the team he needs to show marked improvement in training camp and preseason so that he can earn some time on the playing field. It doesn?t bode well for a player when two respected coaches with tons of defensive knowledge (Parcells, Phillips) have seen fit to not play him with any regularity. Carpenter needs to bully his way into the lineup this year or he?ll probably end up with another team trying to resurrect his career.

Carpenter's status

It appears that as long as linebacker Bobby Carpenter remains with the Cowboys, the 2006 first-round pick won't have a chance to make an impact.

One NFL source said Miami, which plans to run the 3-4 defense, isn't interested in trying to trade for Carpenter. There was some thought he could find a home in Miami via a trade because it was Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland, both of whom are with the Dolphins now, who drafted him.

Prevailing belief among NFL people is that Carpenter is a better fit for a 4-3 scheme.

Jersey taken off Carpenter's back, sold as Thomas' online
By Clarence E. Hill [email protected]
STAR-TELEGRAM/RALPH LAUER

IRVING -- The Dallas Cowboys' merchandising department is already on the Zach Thomas bandwagon, as are many Cowboys fans.

But last week's signing of the former Dolphins and Texas Tech linebacker is not going over well with everybody in the Cowboys locker room.

For starters, the Cowboys are already selling No. 54 jerseys with "Thomas" emblazoned on the back on their Web site. Thomas wore 54 with the Dolphins.

The problem is that linebacker Bobby Carpenter currently wears the No. 54.

According to a source, the merchandising department might have gotten ahead of itself in marketing Thomas' jersey, considering that a number change has not been worked out with Carpenter, and that Thomas has said he would be willing to wear No. 55.

Carpenter confirmed in a text message Tuesday night that he has not given his number away.

The Bobby Carpenter situation

This wouldn't be a big deal, except he was a first-round draft pick two years ago who never plays. When the Cowboys drafted defensive end Erik Walden in the sixth round, it sent yet another signal that Carpenter might not fit. Walden will be converted to outside linebacker, Carpenter's spot. Even the Miami Dolphins' off-season raid of the Cowboys didn't include Carpenter. He doesn't fit in a 3-4 scheme despite showing some potential near the end of his rookie season.

Another season, another position for Carpenter

IRVING ? Bobby Carpenter is entering his third season, and he will be playing his third position.

Carpenter, the Cowboys' first-round draft choice in 2006, is moving to weakside inside linebacker behind Zach Thomas. He spent last season as Bradie James' backup at the strongside spot and his rookie season at outside linebacker.

Carpenter said he and coach Wade Phillips had a talk recently about the move.

"Hopefully, it will give me an opportunity to play," Carpenter said

Carpenter had two tackles on defense in 2007 but was second on the team with 21 special teams stops.

"Last year was especially frustrating because I thought I'd improved a lot and didn't get a chance to play and show a lot," Carpenter said. "All I'm really asking for is an opportunity to play a couple of games to prove to myself and the organization and everyone lese that I can play, and with some experience I'll be the guy they projected me to be."

Carpenter On The Move Again At Linebacker

IRVING, Texas - He was once an outside linebacker they moved inside. Then out of necessity the end of his rookie season he was moved back outside.

By time his second season rolled around, he was moved back inside on the Cowboys' 3-4 defense, and guess what? Now he has been moved to the other inside linebacker spot.

Such is the life of Bobby Carpenter, the Cowboys 2006 first-round draft choice who might finally have found a home on this team.

"I think it's an opportunity to play," said Carpenter, who will be competing with 35-year-old veteran Zach Thomas for the starting "Mo" inside backer spot vacated by the trade of two-year starter Akin Ayodele to Miami the day before the draft. "Wade told me they were moving me to where Akin was playing.

"I'm excited about the move."

Carpenter happy to remain with team
By MAC ENGEL
Star-Telegram staff writer

IRVING -- When the Miami Dolphins made a trade with the Dallas Cowboys for tight end Anthony Fasano before the draft, they also wanted a linebacker, and it wasn't Akin Ayodele.

According to an NFL source, the Dolphins wanted Bobby Carpenter, but the Cowboys weren't willing to part with the 2006 first-round draft pick. So Dallas included Ayodele in the deal.

Either way, Carpenter said Friday he is happy to be staying with the Cowboys, but that he wants to play.

"This is still a great opportunity for me, and [inside linebacker] is a place where I think I can use my athletic ability to make plays," Carpenter said. "If I'm going to have a shot to play, I want it to be here."

He's currently backing up veteran Zach Thomas. Carpenter said he's been studying game film with Thomas and already has picked up quite a bit in the short time the veteran free-agent acquisition has been with the Cowboys.
