LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

Calvin Watkins on the Cowboys (9/17)

05:43 PM CDT on Monday, September 17, 2007

Cowboys beat writer Calvin Watkins answered questions about the team on Monday, Sept. 17.

TMAN: What's up with Bobby Carpenter? Not much playing time and no impact on the defense.

Calvin Watkins: Bobby Carpenter is not playing well in practice or during the games. Next year is an important year for the former first-round pick. Carpenter has to be more aggressive against the run. Sometimes he appears to back off when opposing teams run toward him.

Jay: Do you think Bobby Carpenter will ever become a productive player for the Cowboys?

Rick Gosselin: Carpenter showed the talent in college to be a first-round draft pick. It's on the coaches to find that talent at this level and put him in position to make plays. The Parcells staff couldn't do that. Neither has the Phillips staff. I still think there's something there with Carpenter. Everyone thought Troy Polamalu was a wash after his rookie season when he didn't start any games and made only a handful of special-teams tackles. He won a starting job in his second season and wound up in the Pro Bowl that February. Carpenter has too many measurables to give up on.

Carpenter has slight tear in quad
Cowboys LB Bobby Carpenter said in the locker room this morning that he's dealing with a slight tear in his right quadriceps tendon.

Carpenter has been told by doctors and trainers that the injury requires 4-6 weeks of rest to heal, and he's decided against sitting to get back to 100 percent. And he's also come to grips with the fact that the quad simply won't be at full strength this season, provided he doesn't reverse course.

"I wouldn't say it's really all that terribly frustrating," he said. "I had a pretty good game when I was in last week. I don't know how much it's affected my performance. I think I take pretty good care of myself. Hopefully, it's something I'll be able to play through."

Carpenter playing catch-up
By RICK HERRIN

Bobby Carpenter and A.J. Hawk were much-hyped stars at Ohio State seemingly bound for big futures in the NFL.

Both long-haired linebackers were first-round draft picks in 2006 and are playing for the NFC's two 10-1 teams that meet tonight.

But Carpenter and Hawk are living much different NFL lives.

Hawk, who was drafted fifth overall, is headed for another 100-tackle season for the Green Bay Packers and has started every game since he entered the league.

Meanwhile, Carpenter carries a much different role in Dallas as primarily a special teams player. Not exactly what the player taken No. 18 overall by Bill Parcells expected.

"Hey, if they don't think I can play defense," Carpenter said. "Hopefully I can show them I can play special teams."

Carpenter has fallen out of the mix in the Cowboys' defensive plans under first-year coach Wade Phillips. One of the first signs was when the team drafted linebacker Anthony Spencer in this year's first round. And it doesn't help that his new coach doesn't consider Carpenter's pass rushing as one of his strengths.

Carpenter, who has been battling a slight quad tendon tear, has kept a positive attitude and good work ethic despite being involved in less than 25 plays on defense this season. He has made an impact on special teams where he has 13 tackles, tied for second-best on the team.

The Cowboys' talent-laden cast at linebacker that became more crowded with Greg Ellis' return from injury has forced Carpenter to wonder when his chance to play defense will come.

"I just haven't had any extended time to go in and prove myself this year," said Carpenter, who backs up inside linebacker Bradie James. "Coming into the season, I thought I would play a little more and be worked in a little bit more."

Quick Hits: Take Two For Carpenter At Linebacker

IRVING, Texas - Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips admitted Thursday that he might have been too harsh in determining what role linebacker Bobby Carpenter would play this season in the defense.

Last year's first-round pick been reduced to a special teams player for the entire season, rarely getting any snaps on defense. The decision was largely based, Phillips said, on Carpenter's performance in the preseason finale at Minnesota.

"I think Bobby will say this - the last preseason game we gave him a big opportunity and he didn't play well," Phillips said.

That decision is mostly why Carpenter had been given very few defensive snaps, Phillips said.

"And I told them all, coaches don't always make the right decisions," Phillips said.

Phillips credited Carpenter for practicing hard, doing the right things in practices and being a good guy and a good athlete. He also likes the way Carpenter has played all season on special teams, where he is second on the team with 19 tackles.

But the play of Bradie James is what has ultimately prevented Phillips and the coaching staff from inserting Carpenter more on defense. James won Phillips over with his play on the field, and has continued to do so for 15 games, leading the team with 119 tackles. And Kevin Burnett's play has kept Carpenter off the nickel defense.

"Bradie was a really good football player and needed to be on the field for us at that position," Phillips said.

But expect Carpenter to receive some defensive snaps this Sunday at Washington. Phillips did not say how many, but said it would be another opportunity for Carpenter to show what he can do in the Cowboys' defensive schemes.

Carp and his fiancee were on the Cabo excursion with Romo and Jessica...plus Carp was at the NC game on Monday...he has been busy :tongue2:

Romo's decision to spend the bye weekend in Cancun with singer-actress Jessica Simpson has triggered a media firestorm in Dallas, where Romo's commitment toward Sunday's playoff game is a matter of public debate.

"It's frustrating to hear him get criticized because I know what he puts into it," said Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten, who along with his wife accompanied Romo, Dallas linebacker Bobby Carpenter and Carpenter's fiancee on a brief Mexican vacation with the blessing of first-year coach Wade Phillips. "He's catching a lot of heat he shouldn't be catching."
