2017 Recruiting Snapshot: Baron Browning
The Player
Baron Browning is a 6’3” 230-pount outside linebacker out of Kennedale HS in Kennedale, Texas. He is rated as the No. 2 outside linebacker recruit in the class of 2017, and the No. 3 player in the state of Texas.
Browning possesses a great ability to get to the ball quickly and make surefire tackles. He can blitz the quarterback well, and can also drop back in pass coverage and does that well also. He could possibly line up at any of the linebacker positions, as well as maybe on the defensive end as a third-down rusher.
As a comparison, current Buckeye middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan is 6’2” and 243 pounds as a junior, so size wise he matches up fairly well and that is without time under noted strength coach Mickey Marotti.
The Comparison
After watching the highlights and watching this season for the Buckeyes, the guy I see Browning resembling on the current roster is Jerome Baker. Baker tackles well, can play in coverage, and blitzes well. Baker played limited snaps as a true freshman, but got pulled into starting duty when Dante Booker went down with injury. I can see the same type of playing time for Browning early on if he performs well in camp.
The Fit
Browning is the ideal fit for the Ohio State defense as a linebacker. As was said above, his current size and weight are right on par with what the current Ohio State linebackers are, and with the college conditioning program at Ohio State, he will only become stronger. His ability to play multiple positions for the Buckeyes will benefit him as well as Ohio State as it should get him on the field fairly quickly.

In His Coach's Words: Ohio State Linebacker Baron Browning

Players don't come to Ohio State much more ballyhooed than linebacker Baron Browning. Now enrolled as a true freshman at OSU, Browning was a 5-star prospect and high school All-American at Kennedale High School in Kennedale, Texas. Seen as one of the top prospects in the entire 2017 recruiting class, much is expected of Browning down the road.
Those expectations aren't just focused on the football field, however, and if they were, you get the feeling that there's little chance Browning would have ever ended up at Ohio State.
"I think Coach Meyer did a good job with Baron and his parents assuring them that he was going to get an education first and foremost, and that he was coming to Ohio State and he was going to make a difference on the field," Kennedale head football coach Richard Barrett told The-Ozone. "They felt like he was the guy they needed to really come in and make an impact. I don’t know if he’s going to play as a freshman, he certainly may, but they think he has a bright future."
As to what Browning saw in Ohio State that he liked, Barrett isn't quite sure, but he has a pretty good idea.
"My guess is that he and Urban Meyer and Luke Fickell and Tim Beck developed a relationship and a rapport and it just took off from there," he said. "It was one of those things where I think he became very comfortable on his trip, and all of the times they were here visiting with him, I think he just felt at ease at Ohio State and all of the things that go along with it. He found something there that he couldn’t find at other schools, then you have Beck leaving and Fickell leaving, so who’s the last man standing – it’s Urban Meyer, well there you go."

I'd say Browning gets some playing time for a good bit of this year. May not start but they sound pretty high on him already.

I think a lot depends on how the whole linebacker shuffle shakes out. You've got Worley and Baker locked into 2 of the 3 spots and a bunch of vets (such as Booker) who have been in the program a while. Urban doesn't typically go deep at LB. He usually sticks to his 3 and then drops 1 for a nickel. So unless Browning passes the vets (possible), he'll be playing special teams and mop-up duty.

Not exactly true. Raekwon wasn't relegated to merely special teams and mop up duty as a true frosh. He played lots of meaningful snaps. I see Browning having a similar rookie year. The fact he is in for entire spring is KEY.

Grant was weak to bad before raekwon arrived. Booker was ahead of baker before his injury. If they keep the same positions, I see meaningful but limited playing time for baron.
Now if Worley struggles inside? All bets are off as Baron might be their biggest guy right now and I don't think Booker would excel inside.
OSU hasn't seen a monster like this since Big Kat. Even big guys like Perry look forward like boys compared to their upperclassmen self. I can't imagine what Baron will look like in 3 years.
