LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

and since BinMich called me out... did you know Akron U beat OSU... in 1895.. Heisman was Akron's coach... and I was there

Actually, Akron beat tOSU in 1894 with Heisman as the coach. In 1895, tOSU won, and Akron had no head coach (Heisman had moved on to Auburn).

And I believe you were there, NJ. And it's not that your memory was faulty at an advanced age, it's just that you believed ABC's answer to the trivia question during the Miami game, when they gave the wrong year for that Akron victory.

And back on topic, I have Hawk only behind Spielman for tOSU's LBs.

What Hawk and Carp do on the field the rest of the season will stack them against the greats. They have what it takes. Speilman and Pepper were a great team. These two are also. I thought Katz was the specimen until these two. Wilhelm was good but lacked the blazing speed like Kat, AJ and Carp. No doubt they will be great but to top Speilman they will have to put up the numbers and go on to great careers with that great burning desire that is still evident in Speilman. Chris did it without the physical attributes these two have.

Guess who debuted at #6 in ESPN's latest Heisman poll ...

Just got this weeks Sporting News, and A.J. comes in at #5 in their Heisman watch. I'm a realist, I know that a defensive player has pretty much zero chance of winning it with the offensive talent this year, but how great would it be to see A.J. sitting up there with the other finalists in December. After his performance Saturday night, he is definately on everyones radar now(if he wasn't already). If he keep playing the way he is now, I think it's a strong possibility. :banger:

AJ has to now be an overwhelming favorite for the Butkus award, which has already been stated. But it would be great if the publicity keeps rolling in for him, which could help him win the Bednarik and Nagurski awards, which are 2 postseason awards that haven't yet been given to a tOSU player.

Both awards debuted in 1993, and are given to the best (or most outstanding) defensive player.

Hawk is ALREADY a Buckeye "All Time Great" and still has pretty much a full season left to play.

I loved Gary Danielson's analysis that A.J. was a "bigger, faster Chris Spielman." That being said, it doesn't necessarily make him better because all the draft guru's dropped Chris down their boards because he was "too short and too slow."

Wherever he ranks in peoples minds in terms of "greatest evers" one thing is for sure. In 20 years, there is going to be a hot-shot, can't miss great LB coming to TOSU that people will be comparing to A.J. Cuzz it will probably take that long before we ever see one that good again. I'll put it this way, Hawk is a combination of Gradishars size and speed, coupled with Spielmans intensity. That would have to rank him pretty high.

Which just goes to show you that draft gurus are not worth the big dollars they are paid to evaluate talent.

Man, if Spielman had been on a team with even half a roster his NFL career would have been supreme -- as it was he put up great numbers, for the Lions and the newly birthed and the otherwise defenceless Browns.

Time to put back on the video of the Iowa game ---

The thought of AJ sitting up their with the other Hiesman canidates makes my heart skip a beat.Personally I dont care where AJ ranks all-time he is a true BUCKEYE. Some of the stories I have heard about AJ's personal character, eg. his classmate in the wheelchair, makes me respect him for his character more than anything he could do on a saturday. I love wearing the jersey of a stand up person, much nicer than say #13. Thanks for all the memories AJ.
GO BUCKS!

i guess we need to put him in on offense, we have seen that he has great hands.

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but AJ moved up a spot on CFBnews Top 10 Players list to #5, earning Co-player of the week honors with Vince Young...

Hawk made 12 tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss, forced one fumble, recovered a fumble and picked off a pass in the 25-22 loss to Texas.

Well, to get back to the original post of how good as compared to other OSU linebackers Hawk is up there. Yet for me it's still Spielman. He was an absolute monster. Too bad he played on some mediocre teams. In my eyes he was the ultimate linbacker. If Hawk continues to dominate this year he can make a good case, but Spielman is still the best OSU linebacker I ever saw. Of course there are others that I didn't ever get to see prior to the 80's.

After #36, Hawk is the next best.

Of course comparing an OLB to a MLB is a little difficult. Chris was an extreme run stuffer like you want a MLB to be. Hawk is a speedy playmaker like you want an OLB to be. I still just love Spielman because he is the ultimate tough guy in the middle that makes every tackle thrown his way and then some. On top of that, everyone wrote him off as undersized and too slow. AJ is great, but I just can't sell myself on better than Spielman just yet. Although he has me thinking about it, which is a feet in and of itself.
