LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

A.J. Hawk fined $10,000 for the flipping the bird
Packers LB was saluting teammates Brad Biggs
October 21, 2011

Apparently, it?s not even a good idea to give your teammates the bird.

It?s definitely a no-no to give a one-finger salute to the opponent or the crowd, and A.J. Hawk has learned it?s not a good idea to use it, period.

The Green Bay Packers linebacker has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for making the gesture to his own sideline during Sunday?s victory over the St. Louis Rams at Lambeau Field. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported the news.

Hawk was contrite about the matter afterward.

?I guess it was on TV," Hawk said after the game, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I definitely wasn't mad or upset with anybody. It was kind of a running joke with a couple of my teammates. I got caught up in the emotion of the game.

"Sometimes you forget that it's on TV. I definitely want to apologize to anyone who's kids were watching and got offended or anything. I understand. I'm sorry that got out there. ? I definitely apologize for that. It wasn't meant to get out there for people to see."

Now, he knows better.

So AJ Hawk flips off one of his own teammates on the sidelines of a game and he gets fined $10,000.

Charles Woodson punches an opponent on the field of play during a game and he gets fined $10,000.

Roger Goodell may be the biggest clown in professional sports.

Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk steps up for little dogs with Mighty Dog campaign

A.J. Hawk of the Green Bay Packers with his Chihua

Little dogs get no respect.

From the chihuahua in the Taco Bell commercials to the pooch that fits in Paris Hilton?s purse, small dogs are often laughed at more than admired. And their owners? According to a recent Mighty Dog survey, only 17 percent of Americans describe a man who owns a small dog as ?macho,? while small dog owners are overwhelmingly expected to be female. However, one small dog owner is aiming to derail that stereotype in a big way.

Green Bay Packer A.J. Hawk recently teamed up with Mighty Dog to promote the brand?s ?Big Guy, Small Dog? contest to publicly reveal his approval for pint-sized pooches. Hawk, a 247-pound NFL linebacker, is the owner of a 4-pound Chihuahua named Todd. Both will appear in Mighty Dog?s 2012 ?Big Guy, Small Dog? calendar, along with 11 other contest winners chosen by Hawk and Mighty Dog.

?When we started talking with Mighty Dog, I said of course, that?d be a great opportunity for me not only to get Todd out there ? I know Todd loves the attention ? but I agree with the message they?re trying to get across to change the stereotype of not only little dogs but their owners, too,? Hawk said. ?They?re not pampered, high maintenance and all that. I like being able to go against the grain and change the perception. I always said, I?m not in middle school anymore. I?m not sitting around trying to compare how much I bench press and how tough I am. You can still be a big tough guy and have these tiny little dogs and have fun with them.?

Inside Slant: A.J. Hawk
By Ricky Zeller Packers.com contributing writer

He has been a combination of hard work, grit and intensity since arriving in Green Bay in 2006, and A.J. Hawk has yet to take a day off. Consistency has been his hallmark: The inside linebacker has never missed a game, has finished among the top two on the team?s tackle charts annually and earned his first Pro-Bowl selection last season.

While first known for his aggressiveness in filling holes in running situations, since early last season Hawk never leaves the field. In 2010, he tied for first among all NFL linebackers with a career-best three interceptions, and during his career he has picked off eight passes, recovered four fumbles and forced two.

A spokesman for the Wisconsin Special Olympics, Hawk holds a degree in criminology from Ohio State and is interested in law enforcement following his career in the NFL. In this installment of Inside Slant, Hawk discusses the thrill of being drafted by the Packers, his responsibilities as the play-caller in the huddle and how his body feels after nearly 700 career tackles, among other subjects.

Green Bay Packers LBs Desmond Bishop, A.J. Hawk out with calf injuries
Nov. 24, 2011

Green Bay Press-Gazette

DETROIT ? The Green Bay Packers played the entire second half of Thursday's game against the Detroit Lions without their starting inside linebackers, whose status is in doubt for next week?s game at the New York Giants and perhaps longer.

Desmond Bishop?s calf injury appears to be the worse of the two. He left the game late in the first quarter, was on crutches for the second half and in the locker room after the game. He is scheduled for an MRI examination today.

A.J. Hawk sustained his calf injury later in the first half. He finished the first half on the field but then was on the sideline with ice on his injury for the entire second half.

?I looked behind me, and I was hoping I got kicked,? Hawk said. ?It was really weird because it?s never happened to me.?

When asked whether his injury is as serious as Bishop?s, Hawk said: ?I hope not, I don?t know. We?ll both get MRIs Monday. I have no idea. Obviously, I didn?t want to sit out the second half. I tried to run out there, but I couldn?t run like I wanted to.?

A.J. Hawk, Desmond Bishop both out
Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- When the Green Bay Packers lost both starting inside linebackers by halftime of their Thanksgiving game at Detroit, the defense was forced to improvise with its version of the silent count.

The Packers didn't have the benefit of relaying calls from the sideline to the defense on the field using a radio device because A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop were out of the game with calf injuries. They were the two players the team designated to wear helmets with speakers to carry alignment calls from coach Winston Moss before each play.

"It was the first time in my career that I had both of them go out. So that was a new experience," defensive coordinator Dom Capers said Friday.

Hawk back in action, but Starks out
By Mike Spofford, packers.com staff writer

Inside linebacker A.J. Hawk could return to the field on Sunday after missing one game, but running back James Starks will be sitting this one out.

Hawk returned to practice on a limited basis on Friday for the first time since injuring his calf on Thanksgiving in Detroit, and he is listed as questionable on the injury report for Sunday against Oakland.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy sounded encouraged about Hawk?s chances, and he suggested the coaching staff might discuss a rotation at inside linebacker for the game involving Hawk, D.J. Smith and Robert Francois. Desmond Bishop, who also hurt his calf in Detroit, remains out.

?Everything looked positive,? McCarthy said of Hawk?s recovery. ?Dr. McKenzie felt good about A.J. and just the way he progressed throughout the week, so we?ll see what tomorrow brings.?

Hawk had never missed a game in his six-year career, playing in 98 straight (including playoffs) until last week, when Smith and Francois started at the inside linebacker spots. The two backups took the bulk of the snaps in practice again this week, and both likely will play, regardless of Hawk?s status.

?Having A.J. up for the game to me is a bonus,? McCarthy said.

Simple things like this really shows me the difference between an NFL stud and me

When I was in my late 20s, I was playing in a rough game of hoops... and I wanted to turn around and punch the SOB that just kicked me in the calf so hard it felt like he used a knife and stabbed me... but no one was closer than 5 ft.. same injury AJ has... and I couldn't walk right for couple weeks let alone play in an NFL game

A.J. Hawk: The first of the opponents' 73 passes for 20 yards or more was given up by Hawk on an option route against the Saints' Darren Sproles for 36 yards. Months later, Dom Capers referred to that awful play trying to explain how difficult it was trying to find adequate matchups against some teams. Capers did what he could to hide Hawk in coverage. Still, he gave up five 20-plus passes. Against the run, Hawk was a late reactor who never delivered a smashing hit and often took bad angles or was a step slow in pursuit. He missed 15 tackles, six more than in any of his five previous seasons, and had just 1? for loss. Thirteen players had at least one turnover play but Hawk didn't have any. He did improve in one area, ranking fourth among the blitzers with one pressure every 9.23 snaps. Grade: D.

Hawk taking heat in Green Bay
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 22, 2012

The Packers aren?t involved in the NFC title game Sunday, and that?s causing some soul searching in Green Bay.

Where did this season go wrong? What happened to the Packers defense during the season?

There are a lot of directions you can go with the answer, but Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel starts with one decision: Re-signing A.J. Hawk to a monster contract and letting Nick Barnett walk away.

Some highlights from McGinn?s article: ?He?s just a guy. His contract is by far the worst contract that Thompson has ever enacted.?

And: ?It?s beyond me how [G.M. Ted] Thompson can come back with Hawk as the starter next season. There even have been whispers among Hawk?s teammates. They know better than anyone else how little his game has to offer,? McGinn wrote.

Ouch. These words are so striking because McGinn is among the most knowledgeable, measured writers in the country. He believes the Packers need to trade or release Hawk in the offseason, which would mean D.J. Smith would take over for Hawk in 2012.

It?s hard to imagine that happening, but Hawk?s 2011 season has raised that kind of doubt in Green Bay.
