Without Bishop, Packers leaning on D.J. Smith over A.J. Hawk
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 16, 2012
The Packers have a well-regarded, rather expensive inside linebacker.
But in the absence of Desmond Bishop, they?re going to lean on the former sixth-round pick who?s making near the minimum.
According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers are going to rely on D.J. Smith instead of A.J. Hawk in some of their sub packages.
Smith slides into Bishop?s starting slot next to Hawk in the base defense, but will be the only inside linebacker on the field when they go to the dime defense they want to use more this year.
?He?s got good command of the huddle, he moves well and is a physical guy,? defensive coordinator Dom Capers said of Smith. ?He?s got good instinct in there. If they want to run the ball he?s going to show up in the right place.?
The Packers have used Hawk as that lone inside linebacker in dime before, and his salary status (tied for sixth on the roster in annual average, at $6.75 million, per McGinn) makes it seem natural.
AJ Hawk Flops To Get A Penalty Against The Chicago Bears
by Riley Schmitt
AJ Hawk is a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers but he also looks to be a pretty good actor. He managed to pull off an amazing flop in order to draw a personal foul penalty against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.
Seriously, this video is simply amazing. You know what they say. They never punish the guy who starts stuff. Hawk clearly shoved Gabe Carimi first, but the refs saw Carimi hit Hawk. Hawk certainly helped them by flying over the pile in order to draw the flag.
We have seen flops in football before but this is certainly one of the best. The fact that Hawk used the pile to make it look even worse is a perfect use of his veteran skills. He knew that he could draw the rookie into doing something stupid and it helped stymie a Bears drive.
This game is certainly what we expected out of these two. It may not be the offensive explosion that many predicted but the defense is playing amazing on both sides. It has been a hard hitting game with a lot of big plays on the defensive side of the ball.
I bet we see this play all over the highlights. Not because it was an amazing play, but because Hawk flopped so badly that everyone instantly made fun of him for. It may not have been pretty, but it was something that we will remember for a while.

A.J. Hawk, who grew up in southwestern Ohio, began growing his hair while in college at Ohio State in tribute to Pat Tillman, a former Arizona Cardinals player who left the NFL to enlist in the U.S. Army. Tillman was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
?When (A.J.) heard of the need for hair at Wigs for Kids in Cleveland, Ohio, he thought that it was time he pay tribute to yet another cause,? Laura Hawk said. ?And in doing so, we got the idea to start our foundation.?
Money and hair donated to Hawk?s Locks for Kids goes toward wigs made for children with cancer, alopecia or trichotillomania, also known as hair-pulling disorder, and those who have suffered from burns. One wig takes about 15 to 20 hair donations and costs about $2,000 to make, Laura Hawk said.
Laura Hawk said as their family grows, the cause is even more important.
?Seeing as how we had our first child in 2010 ? a little girl, Lennon Noel ? and are expecting a second ? a little boy due Super Bowl weekend ? our passion for helping children suffering from any of these diseases or ailments hits a bit closer to home,? she said. ?When a child feels embarrassed and ashamed of their image due to loss of hair that is beyond their control, it?s unfair and heartbreaking that they can?t hold their head high and live their lives as a normal child.?
Laura Hawk, as well as other players? significant others and women who work for the Packers organization, also take part in the Packers Women?s Association. The nonprofit organization works with ASPIRO, Paul?s Pantry, The Salvation Army and House of Hope, and also runs the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer run/walk, the Football 101 clinic and the PWA Care for Kids Project
Hawk has felt pressure since entering the NFL because of his lofty draft status as the No. 5 overall selection in 2006. While critics will say he never lived up to expectations, Hawk is on pace to lead Green Bay in tackles for the fourth time in his career. Hawk also has served as a mentor to younger linebackers such as Smith, who has replaced the injured Desmond Bishop in the starting lineup.
?It's crazy to think I'm in my seventh year in the league," said Hawk, 28. "I feel like a little kid at 21 or 22. Mentally, I'm a lot better than I've ever been. And I just feel overall that I can actually still get a ton better. I'm excited with what the future is going to bring.?

Shifting to college football, how do you feel about your Ohio State buckeyes young defense? Sure could use a sure handed tackler like you out there.
AJ Hawk
I definitely still follow all of the Ohio State games. I watch when I can. I feel good about them. They're playing well. Urban Meyer has done a great job of taking control of the team. I expect big things from them. They're fun to watch.
