Bishop has inside track at linebacker
McCarthy says Packers like what they saw last season
By Bob McGinn of the Journal Sentinel
Feb. 28, 2011
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Indianapolis ? The Green Bay Packers might have a logjam at inside linebacker, but Desmond Bishop is the leader of the pack.

Although contractual factors loom large at the position, the Packers enter the off-season with Bishop as the starter at one of the two inside positions and with A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett competing for the other berth in both the 3-4 base and 4-2 nickel defenses.

Hawk, 27, has a $10 million base salary for 2011 that's guaranteed on the first day of the league year. A source close to Hawk said over the weekend that negotiations have gotten nowhere. If labor accord is reached and Hawk doesn't have a new contract, he's expected to be waived.

"I'm hopeful we can work that out," said McCarthy. "I like A.J. Everybody likes A.J. I like the year he had. I think A.J. belongs in Green Bay."

When Barnett suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Week 4, Hawk replaced him in the nickel and as the defensive signal-caller. In the regular season, Hawk played 90.9% of the snaps.

"We were very consistent, very stable under him," said McCarthy. "He's the quarterback of the defense. He makes the checks. Doesn't get flustered. I think he grew as a leader in the locker room. With A.J., you get the same guy every day.

"After the ball's snapped, I think he's getting more and more comfortable. Very conscientious of leverage and angles. He's one of the best anticipators as far as scheme recognition. He's a good football player."

As we discussed as recently as Saturday, the Packers have a glut of players at the position. They finished the 2010 season with A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop as their starters. Two other veterans, Nick Barnett and Brandon Chillar, were on injured reserve. Bishop signed a four-year contract extension last fall and isn't going anywhere.

So what will the Packers do? Both Barnett and Hawk are candidates to be released, albeit for different reasons. Barnett will turn 30 in May and has suffered season-ending injuries in two of the past three seasons. Meanwhile, Hawk's contract calls for him to have a $10 million base salary in 2011. The deal includes an escalator that will push that figure to the franchise number for inside linebackers if it is higher, according to information I've seen, and the cash will be guaranteed if Hawk is on the Packers' roster at the start of the league year.

Under normal circumstances, the Packers would need to resolve the issue before Friday. But the expiring CBA could relax that deadline because the league year won't start Friday without an agreement. The Packers at some point must act on Hawk's contract to avoid guaranteeing him an eight-figure salary for 2011, be it a release or an agreement to extend the deal and spread out the cash payout.

Speaking Friday at the NFL scouting combine, Packers coach Mike McCarthy made clear he wants Hawk back.

"A.J. Hawk is a Green Bay Packer as far as I'm concerned," McCarthy said. "I'm not going to get into business situations. You just hope they'll work out. ... A.J. as a football player and a person, he's exactly what you're looking for. There is a business side of this. You want all your players back. That's how coaches always view these types of situations. A.J. grew tremendously, not only as a player, but as a leader in our locker room this year. Thought he had a heck of a year. Hopefully everything works out."

Cut. Schefter thinks he'll be back with a new deal.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/02/packers-cut-a-j-hawk/

We didn?t expect Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk to see the $10.5 million he?d be guaranteed on the first day of the league year, and now it?s official that he won?t.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Packers have released Hawk.
However, that doesn?t mean Hawk is gone for good. According to Schefter, there are some who believe a new deal for Hawk is coming, and he?ll stay in Green Bay.

Hawk was the sixth overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft, and although he?s started every game but three in his first five NFL seasons, he hasn?t been quite the star the Packers thought they were drafting. So it?s no surprise he won?t be getting that $10.5 million. Even if the Packers are still able to keep him around.

Packers and Hawk will continue to talk over next day
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 2, 2011

It?s not a surprise that Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk got released Wednesday considering the huge bonus on his contract. It also wouldn?t be a surprise if Hawk returned to the team.

Heck, it?s even possible Hawk could return to the team by the end of Thursday.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Hawk and the Packers will continue to talk through tomorrow night in hopes of getting a deal done. While that will be tough to accomplish, it?s a good sign that both sides would like to come up with a contract that makes sense.

Mike McCarthy indicated at the Combine that Desmond Bishop was locked into a starting job at inside linebacker, which would indicate that Hawk and Nick Barnett would likely get the other gig. If the Packers can get Hawk back at a reasonable rate, Barnett could get the boot.

The Packers officially confirmed Hawk?s release and also announced the release of tight end Donald Lee and safety Derrick Martin. G.M. Ted Thompson wished Lee and Martin well, but hoped Hawk would be back.

?With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision,? Thompson said. ?We?re hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future.?

Sorry guys. :p

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/03/report-a-j-hawk-flying-back-to-green-bay/

A.J. Hawk didn?t enjoy being an ex-Packer. Cut Wednesday by the team, it looks like Hawk is already back in the fold.

Lance Allen of NBC 4 in Milwaukee reports that Hawk is scheduled to fly back to Green Bay on Thursday to sign a new five-year deal. We haven?t heard confirmation on the report elsewhere yet, but the news isn?t a huge surprise.

We passed along a report Wednesday evening that the Packers and Hawk would continue talking in hopes of hammering out a deal before the clock struck midnight on the current collective bargaining agreement.

With Hawk back in the fold, the question now becomes whether Nick Barnett will return to the Packers. (We?re guessing . . . no.) Barnett is due over $6 million in 2011, and coach Mike McCarthy already indicated Desmond Bishop would be a starter next year.

Bishop and Hawk would both by signed through 2014 if Allen?s report is correct.

The Gold & Green suits him well, I kind of hope he plays out the rest of his career there. He could be a HOF Packer.

as a lifelong Buckeyes and Packers fan I echo this sentiement. I was a little criticial of AJ his first few years in GB but man he had a heck of a year in 2010 and without him I do not believe GB wins the super bowl. So happy he is staying in Green and Gold

Obligatory "I'd love to see him in a Browns uniform". In before he re-signs with the Packers.

Obligatory "I hope no OSU player ever goes to the Browns. First, the owner's family doesn't give 2 sh!ts about Cleveland or they wouldn't have helped Modell leave town. Second, the homer fans would have unrealistic expectations and the haters would deride them simply bc of OSU. Third, I don't want any OSU player to have career and life threatening staph infections. Fourth, the Browns are one of the worst and most f'd up franchises in the NFL and have been since they came back."

NEO born and raised but I will never root for the Lerner family's "Browns" and wish OSU players would go anywhere but Cleveland.

Good luck, AJ, on ring number 2.
