LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

Teams tried to sign Packers' Hawk

An interesting point about the Packers' decision to release A.J. Hawk and then try to re-sign him is that a bunch of teams tried to get their foot in the door and sign Hawk on Wednesday. How much Hawk and McCartney used that leverage in negotiations isn't known, but it sure couldn't have hurt his cause.

.
.
Terms of Hawk's deal aren't known yet, but it's safe to assume his numbers will be higher than Desmond Bishop's $18 million over four years with $5 million guaranteed. In all likelihood, the deal will be between $6 million and $7 million a year with guaranteed money approaching $10 million.

Hawk reflects on change in roles
Posted by Rob Demovsky March 4th, 2011

A week into the 2010 NFL season, it seemed like A.J. Hawk?s future might be elsewhere, given that he didn?t play a snap on defense in the Green Bay Packers? season-opening win at Philadelphia.

His agent, Mike McCartney, told the Press-Gazette that his client would be open to a trade if it meant more playing time.

Funny how the NFL works.

Six months later, Hawk was putting his signature on a five-year contract that will keep in Green Bay perhaps through the end of his career.

?That seems like years ago, the start of the season,? Hawk said after signing the deal on Thursday. ?That?s life in the NFL. You never really know day to day what could happen.?

Once Hawk became a regular player on all three downs on defense again, the fifth overall pick in the 2006 draft knew he wanted to stay in Green Bay.

?The culture here is amazing,? Hawk said. ?I talk to people around the league, friends who are with other teams, and I don?t think there?s any place in the league that compares to Green Bay. And being here gives me the best chance at winning more Super Bowls.?

Hawk?s new deal 5 years, $33.75 million
Posted by Pete Dougherty March 7th, 2011

A.J. Hawk?s new contract with the Packers is worth $33.75 million over five years and includes $10.95 million in first-year pay.

According to a source with access to NFLPA salary figures, the linebacker?s contract averages $6.75 million a season for the five years, and will pay him $21.35 million over the first three years.

Hawk, who signed the deal late last week, was scheduled to make $10 million this year under the terms of his previous contract. The new deal pays a little more than that this season but spreads some of those costs across future salary caps ? assuming there will be a salary cap in the next collective bargaining agreement ? and adds four more years to the deal.

Hawk?s contract includes a signing bonus of $8 million, roster bonus of $1.8 million and 2011 base salary of $1.15 million, which means he?ll make $10.95 million in 2011. If the salary cap returns in the same form it?s been since 1994, that $8 million will be prorated over all five seasons for cap calculations, so in 2011 he?ll count $4.55 million against the 2011 cap.

In 2012, he?ll make $4.95 million, with $4.4 million of that in base salary, $300,000 in a roster bonus and $250,000 in a workout bonus.

In 2013, he?ll make $5.45 million ($4.9 million base salary, $300,000 roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus).

In 2014, he?ll make $5.95 million ($4.9 million base, $800,000 roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus).

And in 2015 he?ll make $6.45 million ($5.4 million base salary, $800,000 roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus).

It was not immediately available whether the roster bonuses were tied to games played.

No surprise here: Hawk and Bishop are starters going into 2011
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
March 10, 2011

Madison - I got a chance to spend a few minutes with coach Mike McCarthy after the University of Wisconsin pro day Monday at the Dave McClain Athletic Facility.

McCarthy was in a relaxed mood despite what has been a hectic post-season schedule with only limited time for vacation.

Last week, the Packers finalized a five-year, $33.75 million deal with LB A.J. Hawk right before the deadline for all league business to end until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached. The deal came about 24 hours after the Packers released Hawk and left open the possibility another team could sneak in and sign him.

McCarthy admitted he was a little nervous.

"I wish the timing was a little quicker," he said with a laugh. "But I love A.J. Talk about a team guy, he?s exactly what you want. He?s the same guy every day. Works his butt off. Obviously, he?s a good player. I?m glad we got him."

I asked McCarthy if his expectation was that Hawk would be a three-down player again next year given that former starter NIck Barnett and key backup Brandon Chillar are expected back from injuries.

"I hope so," he said. "That?s up to the players. If he plays the way he did this year there?s no reason he shouldn?t be (a three-down player). (Desmond) Bishop played very well, too. We line up tomorrow, it?s A.J. and Bishop, and that?s the way we finished."

This off-season has fared Hawk well
By Lori Nickel of the Journal Sentinel

Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk and his Chihuahua, Todd, are inviting guy?s guys across the country to enter the Big Guy, Small Dog Contest.
Surgically-repaired wrist ready for training camp

A new contract. A baby. Working out. Tweeting. Going on TV with his 4-pound Chihuahua. . . .

It's been a good off-season for Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk, including the fact he's finally able to let his injured wrist heal.

Right after the Super Bowl in February, Hawk had surgery to repair ligament damage in the wrist. Pins were inserted and he was in a cast for a couple of months, he said.

Now he's wearing a brace while working out six days a week.

"It's still not completely healed," said Hawk. "But I'm perfectly fine for training camp and everything. I played the whole year with it, so it's fine; it will be all right."

Otherwise, Hawk has been keeping up with the day-to-day court drama of the NFL lockout only to a point, uninterested in its complexities. He's just hoping and waiting for the day when he can get back to work.

But Hawk isn't so sure a players-only workout is a good idea. Teams like Dallas, the New York Giants, New York Jets and New Orleans have had them, and Hawk has heard the suggestions that the Packers have one, too.

There is a value to these players-only practices, he said, but it is limited. It's not clear how productive these practices are compared to a structured off-season practice run by coaching staffs of 20 or more.

"The most the defense can do when we get together is seven-on-seven," said Hawk. "I can understand quarterbacks throwing to receivers and stuff like that. I think it's more of a camaraderie thing.

"I've heard that different guys' workouts from different teams have just been a disaster. They're working out at bad high school fields and equipment and all that kind of stuff."

A.J. Hawk: Wary of unofficial workouts
May, 11, 2011
By Kevin Seifert

Earlier this week we noted that Detroit Lions players were organizing football-specific workouts while the lockout rolls on. At about the same time, Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk questioned the value of such workouts in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

In an ESPN phone interview, Hawk said he would be in favor of gathering with his teammates for offseason lockout workouts provided the setting was appropriate.

"These owners built these billion dollar facilities and we're not allowed in to work out in them," Hawk said. "The fans ... paid all this money and basically paid for all these stadiums and [owners] won't let us in to work out. That's what I think is a disaster. We've got guys [around the NFL] working out on soggy high school fields that are getting rained on, and we don't have proper equipment and we don't have trainers. We don't have anything there. It's kind of on us if guys get hurt."

Some of you might not feel sympathy for an NFL player who practices on a soggy field, but this is a matter of economics, not toughness. Players who suffer an offseason injury during team workouts are covered by the injury provisions in their contracts. If an injury occurs during the lockout, they could ultimately be released or waived without the usual compensation they would receive. So I don't blame players like Hawk for protecting themselves appropriately during this period.

Hawk said that Packers players have discussed the possibility of getting together but noted that team workouts would benefit some positions -- say, quarterback and receivers -- more than others.

"We're going to have to find a good location for this if we do," Hawk said.

Hawk looking forward following ?unique year?
After Super Bowl win, Centerville product is released for a day, gets re-signed and now waits.
By Kyle Nagel, Staff Writer
Thursday, May 19, 2011

FAIRBORN ? Considering he once left a national college defensive player of the year award behind at his home near the Ohio State campus when he moved out, A.J. Hawk wasn?t scrambling to pocket souvenirs after Super Bowl XLV.

?I obviously have the cleats and gloves,? said Hawk, a Green Bay Packers linebacker. ?Some shirts and hats they gave us. But I didn?t take anything too crazy. I know what happened. It just finished a pretty unique year.?

In a little more than three months, the Centerville High School and Ohio State product has experienced significant changes in his football life.

He has won a Super Bowl with the Packers, been released by that team a month later, re-signed a day after that and lived through the uncertainty of the NFL owners lockout.

But Hawk also has the constant pick-me-up at his offseason home in Columbus, 5?-month-old daughter Lennon, with whom he can now spend more time.

Hawk talked about those aspects of his life on Thursday before he and brother Ryan, who set six Centerville passing records during his career from 1996-1999, appeared at the annual banquet for the Sonny Unger Foundation.

About winning the Super Bowl:

Of course, everyone wanted to know what it was like to play in and win a Super Bowl, AJ Hawk provided his insight on that.

?This was just another game, of course I didn?t tell the media that. I used this in the Super Bowl,? said AJ Hawk.

AJ Hawk also talked about an article in the Dayton Daily News when he and Ryan played for Centerville. They had Ryan and the quarterback from Wayne head-to-head for the story. Ryan indicated that it was just another game, while it riled Wayne, AJ used this as motivation for the big game this past January.

On Head Coach Jim Tressel:

With all of the chaos going on at Ohio State and Head Coach Jim Tressel AJ Hawk also talked a little bit about what he thought about the whole incident surrounding those issues.

?I think from the get go, Coach Tressel was just trying to protect his guys. The thing is he has 110-120 guys on that team, he can?t babysit all of them at the same time. You can?t keep tabs on every single guy.?

AJ Hawk said he sent Tressel a text message immediately when all the news went down about the start of his troubles and Ohio State.

?He [Tressel] said: ?Thanks AJ, we?re gonna grow from this,? that?s just him, that?s who he is.?

AJ and Ryan both talked about their college days at Ohio State and Ohio University. Their parents would take turns going to each kids? game as they would usually both play on Saturday.

A few questions were asked by the audience, one in particular asked if AJ Hawk would ever consider being on Dancing With The Stars.

?I would respectfully decline because I would do terrible,? said AJ Hawk, as the crowd erupted in laughter.
