Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • Anyone here own one and if so is it worth the investment?

My wife and I are getting ready to landscape around our house and instead of using bricks to edge, we're just going to have the grass go right up to the mulch b/c we think it looks nicer, just a personal preference really.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

I don't know if I'd buy an edger. How often do you think you would actually need to use it? My dad just edged around the whole house a couple weeks ago with a spade. It takes longer but it's a lot cheaper than buying an edger. If anything I would rent an edger for a day since you probably are only going to need to edge every few years.

    hawg,

That was my main concern. I figured I could just use a spade even though it may not be as nice.

As far as renting one, that's out of the question, I just recently had a REALLY BAD equipment rental experience.

I may see if anyone I know has one and just borrow it.

You did answer one question I had, how often you reuse it. Every couple of years is not enough for me to invest in purchasing one.

My buddy just rented a power washer for his deck this weekend. It worked fine the first day, but it wouldn't start the second day so he took it back to Home Depot to find out there was water in the oil. They knocked $20 off the rental and gave him a free 4 hour rental in the future.

I've also rented numerous times from Home Depot and never had a major problem. They always credit you something or give you extra time if the equipment ever fails or causes problems.

Right now as a new homeowner I don't mind working out in the yard.

Which edger do you like best and do they do a good job?

Thump - Take a look at how often you will use one. It might be worth borrowing one, seeing how it looks afterwards, and then deciding how often you want it to look nicely trimmed. It is amazing how quickly the grass will grow back in and you will lose the nice appearance of an edged lawn.

I have a grass trimmer that I can attach an edger to. It is a Ryobi and works well (Actually, I just replaced the main unit as it died after 7 years, but it was only $100 so I got my money out of it). It is not a heavy duty one, but is strong enough to edge once a month or so. If you look carefully you might be able to find a grass trimmer that also contains an edger attachment. It is cheaper than buying them separately.

By the way, I think the law is that you can only use a spade if you are retired and wear black socks with shorts.

Like everything in life it depends.

I have an edger attachement that can go in place of my weed whacker.

I live in a sub division and have over 300 feet along the street, a long, wide driveway and a sidewalk going to the front of the house. My grass in a centipede Bermuda mix which would grow across my driveway and the street if I did not egde it. I egde it every two or three weeks.

My neighbor has the walk behind edger model and I think he and several other neighbors all chipped in and share it.

I buy a new weed whacker every two years but the edger attachment has been working for 4 of 5 years now. If you get a big and powerful enough weed whacker you can use the string to edge. I have a two cycle Ryobi but have been eying the 4 cycle ones.

Get a goat. It will eat the grass so you never have to mow it. You can also get milk from it. And there may be another use for it as well, but I'm not really familiar with that!
