also saw The Accountant. I swear, 15 years ago people made fun of Affleck for everything he did. Now everything he touches turns to gold. I thought it was a great movie.

I really enjoyed this one as well. I had forgotten I went to see this one as one of those rare occurances when we didn't have a kid with us.

I still don't know about Affleck's last movie, Live by Night, from the previews, I'm skeptical on it. The Accountant was a good one, though. I wouldn't have probably gone and watched it if not for the wife. I don't pay attention to what movies are coming out anymore so I would have missed this one.

The Infiltrator - kinda overhyped... 4/10; Cranston is very good in spots.. but movie takes big leaps; doesn't take time to adequately build a "I can believe' feeling.. albeit a true story
Captain Fantastic - worth the time; 7/10
A Royal Night Out - really liked this one; might be a bit chick-flick'ish; well acted... I recommend this one; 8/10
The Automatic Hate - not bad if you're running out of movies; 5/10
A Hologram for the King - why did Hanks do this one? not very well conceived movie.. lots of leaps... wouldn't do it with hindsight; 3/10
Central Intelligence - most don't like it but I like Rock and Hart so I gave it a pass; 4.5/10
The Meddler - not so much; 3.5/10
Maggie's Plan - not so much; 3.5/10

The Girl with All the Gifts

It is in the zombie genre, but is a fresher take, if that is still possible. Very derivative (god I hate using that word in reviews, but it is so apt here) of a couple other movies, meshing them, but I can't say which or it would give it away.

The lead actress, a young girl, is great.

My wife drug me to "The Resurrection of Gavin Stone" Sunday. My attitude going in was I am going to go to make Honey Buns happy. I prefer something non-fiction/historical - or the proverbial "based on a true story". I don't do romantic comedy and I get enough Christian inspiration from other sources. But I was pleasantly surprised.

Unlike other faith-based films I have seen, this one was well-acted, not preachy, and quite funny. There is a message, but it is well placed within the overall plot of a past-his-peak child star whose roles have dried up who becomes the typical Hollywood bad boy. A drunken party results in hotel damages and a plea deal that involves 200 hours of community service at a local church. It felt fairly formulaic, but not irritatingly so.

The comedy is the best part of the movie imo - although if you aren't an evangelical Christian you might not get every joke. There are stereotypical Christian characters that are all subtly and overtly made fun of, and I found it well-written and hilarious.

Sub-plots include a sweet romance, a troubled father-son relationship, betrayal, forgiveness, and redemption.

It was a nice film and something anyone of any age can see and enjoy. Obviously, Christian evangelicals will love it, but others can enjoy it without feeling preached at, especially if they get the jokes.
