A note for our religious members who may be easily offended:

The Golden Compass is from a series of books which was specifically written by an atheist as an anti-christian response to Lewis's Narnia.

Considering how long ago the "Chronicles of Narnia were written(40s), it sounds specious at best to state that the books written in 1995 were a response. :tongue2:

Nothing sells like a little controversy!

And should we be shocked at the highly negative reactions of some here? Especially by those who obviously haven't even seen the movie?

If the subject matter upsets you(the role of organized religion in controlling peoples lives) then please, don't go see it.

I've read the books. I've seen the movie. My personal beliefs lay somewhere between agnosticism and atheism.

The books are poorly written and the movie was meh.

The characters are never developed, deus ex machina is the primary vehicle for moving the plot along and the editing was atrocious.

The individual action scenes are fun to watch though.

--Back to the books. The "anti-church" sentiment doesn't REALLY kick in until the third book of the trilogy. The movie is similar to the book in that you're going to get out of it what you are looking for...if you want to see an evil catholic church running the show in the magesterium, you're likely to see it.

Pullman has never publicly confirmed or denied his intent in writing the books (although a few of his associates have stated it to be the case) but he has made the comment regarding the marketability of controversy.

The movie has done poorly not because of perceived christian bashing but because it's just a mediocre film.

Now if they come up with an extended director's cut putting back most of the scenes that were cut to keep it short for high theater turnover...my view may change.

"Pathfinder" Viking vs Indian flick. Not bad really. Filmed very darkly though makes for hard viewing. :(

See I can forgive you for liking The Golden Compass. It at least has some bones worth picking at.

But Pathfinder is just atrocious.

Calling it a steaming pile is an insult to vapor producing feces everywhere.

The "new" part of the Christian Bible was written almost 2,000 years ago and yet people still find the time to write books "in response".

Pullman is very outspoken about his disdain for C.S. Lewis's work. It is not a secret that he despises the Narnia books.

"Marketability of the controversy". :tongue2:

It's a movie strong in metaphor and won't appeal to everyone. But, can be enjoyed on many levels. There is plenty of action.

Good job, Josh! You made it three times further than anyone else has!

We watched the 5 hour A&E version of Pride and Prejudice last weekend. Fine adaptation of the book.

I'd ask you to turn in your man card, but I'm wondering whether you were ever issued one...

 :p

We watched Beaches and Steel Magnolias over the weekend. Both were FABULOUS.

:p

If enjoying 5 hour film adaptations of Jane Austen novels is wrong.....
