Captain Phillips - gripping, interesting glimpse into the humanity behind all sides of naval piracy.

God is Not Dead - Offensive drivel. Wickedly stereotypical and undermines itself at every turn. As a Christian, I liked the concept of the Christian student and the Atheist professor debating God, but the execution of that was a bit sloppy. Overall the extremely cartoonish characters beyond those two, including some borderline racist representations, were abhorrent and serve to reinforce the opposition they claim to be reaching out towards.

Re-watched the original Millennium series (Dragon Tattoo, Played with Fire, Kicked the Hornets Nest) with Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyquist on Amazon over the weekend.

They have the unedited mini-series version that is basically the original movies cut into 2 episodes each and is a full 3 hours per movie. Liked the extra footage as it enhanced the overall story IMO.

The Imitation Game

Really gripping story and brilliantly acted by all involved, particularly Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. I understand there are some glaring inaccuracies, but it's an amazing narrative that needed to be told.

I'm going to see Age of Ultron tonight with the wife and some friends.

I usually save the movies that might not be very good, but still have potential, for date nights in the theater. That way if it sucks it's not a total waste of time.

I've got a good feeling about this movie, though.

2 good indie horror flicks:

You're Next: anyone with Netflix might have seen this one pop up. It has some Strangers/Them feel to it, but adds some family dysfunction to it. Somewhat predictable, but for a moderate budget, it was good. 4/5 for a simple good time of a 90 minutes.

Oculus: this one gets points for originality, and though the lead guy looked and acted way too much like Brady Quinn, the rest of the movies was quite well done. And man, is the lead actress gorgeous, Jesus criminy, so that didn't hurt either. The ending was also decent, a rarity for a horror movie. Another 4/5.

Both were good without being bloodbaths.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Not as good as first one, felt Ultron's development was rushed, didn't feel like a super baddie

One too many jokes for my liking, but was still really good

I enjoyed it more than the first. The first Avengers was a wholly empty "origin story" that didn't get a chance to explore the nuances of each individual. Joss Whedon's return on investment really showed up in this one.

His original cut was over 3.5 hours, so an hour's worth of movie had to be trimmed, which doesn't surprise me. He chose to keep the character development that would matter in the continuity of the series rather than what might matter in the movie on its own. Ultron's part was clearly trimmed, but still had enough (plenty, really) to have him come across as the worthy challenge that ultimately propels the Avengers past "heroes" to "bearers of burden" that carries the Civil War arc in the upcoming Captain America sequel and the Infinity War arc that will ultimately complete the MCU run. There was a concerted effort to balance each of the characters' personalities this time that wasn't present in the first, evidenced by the complete 180 of Hawkeye's character from the stick-up-his ass agent of SHIELD to the self-effacing "I don't really belong here, but I kinda do" man with a family.

Joss Whedon has pulled off some pretty spectacular character developments if you think about it.

He's maintained the audience's love of Tony Stark without completely alienating the fact that Cap is the figurehead of the group by making Tony the bigger half of the character than Iron Man in these movies.

He's kept Thor's identity and powers as a God in check without neutering him in such a way that makes him not "Thor Odinson".

He's humanized two of the most personality-lacking characters in the MCU by developing the relationship between Black Widow and Hulk in a way that doesn't seem forced and out of place.

He's encapsulated the idea of teamwork between heroes without having any blatantly over-produced group hugs in battle or outside of it.

He's given nod and note to every important "name" in the overarching story and packed plenty of personality and spirit into the characters that don't get a whole lot of screen time but shouldn't be forgotten.

The guy is truly a master of ensemble casts and Marvel Studios is gaining the high-level traction that means as long as they don't over-extend their stay they could end this whole thing on a VERY high note.

I agree with all you said except the bold. Infinity War is not going to be the end of the MCU. It's the end of phase 3.
